#251 Michael Darragh Macauley // Beyond the medals
2026/09/30
On episode 251 I am delighted to be joined by Michael Darragh Macauley, one of the defining figures of Dublin’s golden era. The Ballyboden St Enda’s man won an incredible eight All-Ireland titles, alongside 10 Leinster titles and five National Football League medals. He was a two-time All Star and was named GAA/GPA Footballer of the Year in 2013 after a standout season with Dublin. Known for his explosive, aggressive style and fiercely competitive personality, he became a central character in one of the most dominant teams in Gaelic football. After retiring from inter-county football in 2021, Michael Darragh has continued to build a career focused on community, fitness, media and making an impact beyond sport.
In this episode we go back to the serious knee injury at 20 that threatened to end his football career before it had truly begun.Michael Darragh explains how rejection from the Dublin panel, a summer playing football in San Francisco and rediscovering his love for the game changed his trajectory. We explore the culture inside the Dublin dressing room and the mentality that helped them claim 6 All-Ireland titles in a row. He shares what he learned from Pat Gilroy’s management style and why internal competition was such a crucial part of Dublin’s success. We discuss the major defeats that shaped the team and how Dublin turned painful losses into lessons that fuelled their dominance. Michael Darragh opens up about the death of his father in 2013 and how that difficult period influenced his Footballer of the Year season.
We explore his identity away from the traditional image of a professional athlete, from basketball and hip-hop influences to maintaining a life outside football. Finally, we discuss retirement, finding purpose beyond elite sport, community work, and the legacy he hopes to leave behind.
Note this was recorded in late July.

#250 Paul Talty // Olympics vs Gaelic Games insights & lessons
2026/09/23
On episode 250 I am delighted to be joined by Paul Talty, a highly experienced Strength & Conditioning coach who has worked across elite sport in particular swimming and gaelic games, helping athletes maximise performance.
We compare the worlds of Olympic sport and GAA, exploring the differences in structure, preparation, pillars of success, self care in coaching and more. We explore the principles that underpin elite coaching across Olympic sport and GAA, from the importance of consistency to the small details that can make the difference on the biggest stage.
Having spent years working alongside elite athletes, Paul has gained a unique insight into what separates talented players from those who consistently perform when it matters most with key pillars include consistency, preparation and creating the habits required to perform at the highest level.Paul takes us behind the scenes of Paris 2024 and how careful preparation, from managing the Olympic environment to creating familiar routines, helped athletes perform under pressure and win multiple olympic medals. From managing pressure and big moments with different individuals across the games, including Daniel Wiffen’s approach to learning vs winning.
Paul shares his “Golden Rule” of performance: showing up every day, building good habits and avoiding the things that compromise consistency. We also down the three pillars of great coaching — technical knowledge, application and interpersonal skills — and why building trust with athletes is just as important as the programme itself. Paul shares his thoughts on self-care in coaching, sleep, exercise, managing workload and continuing to develop as a practitioner.Ultimately, this is a conversation about the small things that compound over time — and why consistency, preparation and people remain the key ingredients of elite performance.

#249 Conor Meyler // Finding peace and happiness on pitch, through injury and in retirement
2026/09/15
On episode 249 I’m delighted to be joined by former Tyrone footballer and All-Ireland winner Conor Meyler.
A key part of Tyrone’s 2021 All-Ireland winning team, Conor enjoyed an outstanding career that also included three Ulster titles, an All-Ireland U21 medal, a Sigerson Cup with St Mary’s and an All-Star award. After a decade at inter-county level, a series of serious injuries ultimately forced him to walk away from the game at just 31.
We discuss the reality of retirement when it isn’t entirely your choice, the identity void that can come with leaving elite sport, and the lessons Conor learned about what really drives performance. We explore his shift from chasing physical metrics and working harder to understanding self-awareness, courage, trust and the “invisibles” that create high-performing teams.
We also get into the wider player welfare challenges within Gaelic Games, the demands placed on players balancing club, county, college, work and travel, and what needs to change to protect athletes.
Conor also shares what comes next — from performance coaching and leadership consultancy to his PhD research — and why “Trust and Faith” has become his guiding mantra for the next chapter.
A fascinating conversation about elite performance, injury, identity, leadership, player welfare and finding purpose beyond the game.

#248 Aoife Lane // The Missing Half of Sports Science
2026/09/10
On episode 248 I am delighted to be joined by Dr Aoife Lane, Head of Sport and Health Sciences at TUS and a leading voice in research around women and girls in sport.
What happens when the science behind sport doesn’t adequately account for half of the population?
We explore the gender data gap in sports science and why so much of what we know about performance, injury and health has historically been built around male athletes.
Aoife shares her perspective on female athlete health, academic research, female mentors in Gaelic games, mide research, female sporting structures and systems,
We discuss the importance of creating better research and better support systems for girls as they progress through sport, and why the experiences of young female athletes need to be understood much earlier.
We also look at the role of research in shaping coaching and high-performance environments, and how evidence can be translated into practical changes for athletes, coaches and sporting organisations. How do we improve sharing research with those involved in sport rather than remaining inside academic journals?
Aoife also reflects on leadership in sport, the importance of female role models and her involvement in the development of women in roles across gaelic games and sports science in Ireland.
Finally, we look ahead at where women’s sport needs to go next — and what needs to change in research, education, coaching and high-performance sport to create a more equal playing field.

#247 Tommy Drumm // Leadership in sport & business
2026/09/05
On episode 247 I am joined by Dublin’s 1983 All-Ireland winning Captain and player of the year, one of the most respected figures in the history of Dublin Gaelic football Tommy Drumm.
His football journey began with Whitehall Colmcilles, and continued through Dublin's underage ranks, including the 1975 All-Ireland Under-21 final, before he established himself as a senior inter-county player.
Tommy represented Dublin at senior level from 1976 to 1984, establishing himself as one of the best defenders of his generation and becoming a key member and leader of the famous Dublin teams of the late 1970s and early 1980s.
During his inter-county career, Tommy won three All-Ireland Senior Football Championships, five Leinster titles. Four All-Stars,
Tommy captained Dublin to their first All-Ireland Senior Football title in six years in 1983 when Dublin defeated Galway with Tommy lifting Sam Maguire as captain.
He would return as Dublin captain in 1984, leading the team to another Leinster title and back to the All-Ireland final, before retiring at just 28 to move abroad and focus on his professional career.
Away from the football field, Tommy went on to build a very successful career in the construction industry.
Drumm became Managing Director of Collen Construction, combining his practical experience in construction and leadership.
During our chat Tommy offers a unique perspective on Dublin football — from the legendary teams of the 1970s and 1980s, the dressing room and approach by Kevin Heffernan, captaining Dublin to All-Ireland glory, and the characters and stories behind one of the most memorable eras in GAA history, to leadership, business and finding success in sport and business.

#244 Eamon Fennell // Finding Success On & Off the Pitch
2026/08/14
On episode 244 I am joined by former Dublin and St. Vincent's footballer Eamonn Fennell.
We discuss his football and professional career, setbacks, and everything in between. Eamon shares his evolution and journey not only as a footballer but also off the pitch including experiences that shaped him; growing up in a football-mad family, his transfer from O’Toole’s to St Vincent’s, and the unforgettable 2011 All-Ireland win.
He also reflects on being dropped from the Dublin panel by Jim Gavin in 2013, how that disappointment drove him to reach another level, and ultimately winning a Club All-Ireland with St Vincent’s in 2014.
Eamon opens up about being expelled from school at 17, the difficult impact that had on him, and how he turned things around to complete his Leaving Cert before eventually going on to study an MSc and MBA at UCD — despite not following the traditional route into third-level education. He has continued his entrepreneurial spirit building ventures of his own including a coffee shop in Donaghmede, and previously a bar on Camden street with Michael Darragh McCauley and Ross McConnell.
He honestly shares his experience in finding time to do it all including work, coaching, business, training and family, and that it’s not about finding “balance”, but learning how to juggle your priorities.

#243 Ange Kelly // Building championship teams
2026/08/06
On episode 243, I sit down with legendary soccer coach Ange Kelly to explore the philosophy that has shaped one of the most respected coaching careers in football. From winning 5 in a row national championships alongside icons like Mia Hamm and learning under the legendary Pat Summitt, to developing professional players and empowering young women long after they leave the pitch.
We discuss winning, coaching, building a championship team. Kelly also reflects on a career-defining injury that forged her own resilience as a player and not only being part of success but building teams that thrive together.
She explains why talent alone never wins, why consistency separates greatness from potential, and why every successful team needs both stars and selfless players.
In this episode, you’ll discover:
Why coaching is ultimately about developing strong people, not just winning games. The winning formula behind championship cultures. The leadership lessons Ange learned during a 16-year mentorship with Pat Summitt. Why “greatness” is built through consistency—not flashes of brilliance. Why she doesn’t like the word potential How elite teams balance superstar talent with selfless role players. The mindset that helped Kelly overcome adversity and shape a remarkable coaching career. Why the greatest coaching success is measured years after the final whistle.
This is a conversation about leadership, legacy, and finding the true meaning and purpose behind success.
This episode was organised as part of the promotion for a 3-part docuseries “Raising Her Game” that explores the concurrent rise of Title IX, women's sports and U.S. Soccer. This is done through the eyes and experiences of the Texas Longhorns' soccer team during their conference championship run in 2022 under coach Ange Kelly.

#242 Stephen Smith // Sole in One
2026/07/30
On episode 242 I sit down with entrepreneur and previously intercounty footballer Stephen Smith, founder of Sole in One—an innovative product transforming any footwear into golf shoes.
What started as a solution to the frustration of travelling with bulky golf shoes, and a college project has become a business tackling one of golf’s biggest barriers to entry.
But this conversation goes far beyond business.
Smith opens up about the reality of entrepreneurship—the highs of making global sales, the lows of entrepreneurship, and why building a strong network of mentors has been a key part to his journey. Stephen shares the process and work behind the brand, the lessons he has learned and plenty of movie references throughout.
We also dive into the difficult decision to step back from inter-county football to pursue his business. Rather than losing his identity, Smith found a new perspective, discovering that football became an escape from work instead of another source of pressure—ultimately improving his performances on the pitch.
Along the way, he shares his advice for anyone building a brand, so if you’re an aspiring entrepreneur, an athlete navigating life beyond their sport, or someone looking for inspiration to back yourself, this episode is packed with honest insights, practical takeaways, and a reminder that every successful journey starts by solving a real problem.

#241 Gemma McGuinness // Retirement & Reflection in sport
2026/07/23
On episode 241 I sit down with former footballer Gemma McGuinness for a thoughtful conversation about retirement, identity, maximising performance and the lessons that come from taking an unconventional path.
Gemma reflects on her career from navigating the changing landscape of women’s football to finding opportunities when the traditional route wasn’t always clear. We explore her journey, the moments that shaped her perspective, the value of embracing uncertainty, and why some of the biggest opportunities happen away from sport.
Gemma highlights the the role and importance of self-reflection, why perspective matters as much as preparation, and how the pursuit of excellence doesn’t have to come at the expense of enjoying the journey.
We also discuss the realities of retirement from professional sport—how athletes can prepare for such a significant transition, why identity is such an important part of the conversation, and what support can look like during periods of change. What happens when the final whistle blows on a career you’ve dedicated your life to? How do you prepare for life beyond elite sport?
For coaches, parents and young athletes, Gemma offers valuable perspectives and insights on creating environments, supporting others and able to develop both as performers and as individuals. We talk about confidence, communication, leadership, and why the conversations happening off the pitch are often just as important as the ones taking place on it.
Whether you’re involved in sport, facing a career transition, or simply interested in maximising your performance, this episode is packed with honest reflections, and practical insights that extend far beyond football.

#240 Aoife Wafer // The Power of Curiosity
2026/07/14
On episode 240 I am delighted to be joined by back to back Six Nations player of the championship winner, Irish rugby international, Harlequins professional Aoife Wafer.
At just 23 years of age Aoife has cemented herself as one of the best players in the game. However to 10 year old Aoife this was all part of the plan.
Ambition, work ethic, and the power of curiosity are the pillars to the success of Wafers’ career. It has been far from smooth sailing with multiple injuries including a 2 year gap from her first to her second international cap thanks to a serious hanstring injury which not only tested her but her passion for rugby driving her to nearly give up the sport.
Thankfully she took a few steps back and found her love for the game and her passion again. Since then she has taken off on a new found trajectory and was named as the first ever back to back recipient of the 6 nations players of the tournament event.
We discuss her career, the power of curiosity, being a role model, the sacrifices, injuries, and ambition to be the best in the world.
Aoife also shares insights into the power of visualisation, connecting with fans and more.
This was a very honest and insightful chat with one of the great athletes and people of this generation… and she is certainly no where near finished yet!
