Language is powerful. When we use language correctly there is impact. However, when we speak or use language irresponsibly then it can have damaging effects whether towards a situation, a person or in a context. Language is super important when we are talking about the topic of aging as this is where stereotypes can be formed. Listen to this episode and let me know your thoughts on All.AboutAging’s IG page. Ageism is discrimination towards someone due to their age. In our day to day living, there are plenty of examples but are we paying attention to these ageist imageries, wordings, or gestures? Do you think some jokes are just light hearted jokes or are they actually ageist? Think critically! To combat ageism, we need to be able to identify it first. Let’s start with one step at a time and pay attention to our surroundings. Let’s practice recognition first. Next, ask ourselves why is it ageist? Lastly, what would you do to change it? Note: Ageism is a ism that we all may experience and it’s important that we create an environment that’s age friendly!

In this episode we will talk about the use of language associated with older adults. What are some phrases that we often hear or see but we may not know it is ageist , or we often see people joke about it. What are the consequences? This episode will allow all of us to rethink, reframe and reflect on our choice of words!
