S14 E5 "The Unknown Adventurer"
2026/10/19
What happens when you dream big enough to jump into adventures that most people would never consider and then learn from what happens along the way? In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is author Barry Walton, an Emmy Award-winning producer and director who has spent more than twenty years creating documentary films. His extensive adventures have taken him throughout the United States and Mexico and onto the open seas where he encountered difficult and sometimes hazardous sailing conditions. Barry’s adventurous spirit also led him to follow his heart and move to Italy where he would begin a new life, despite not being able to speak the language. Barry will discuss his book “The Unknown Adventurer: A Story of Dreaming Big, Living Big and Learning from Failure” and share with us his experience of chasing dreams, learning from failure and refining those dreams along the way to ultimately discover and experience the things he truly loved and cared about. S13 E1 Blue and Gray: Why They Fought
2026/02/09
In this episode of Your History Your Story, we are very happy to welcome back a truly distinguished guest: Pulitzer Prize winning author, renowned historian and the George Henry Davis 1886 Professor of American History, Emeritus at Princeton University, James M. McPherson. Jim previously joined us to discuss the military, political and international significance of the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest single day in American history. Today, he returns to take us even deeper into the human experience of the Civil War, drawing from his landmark 1997 book, “For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War”. In this episode, Jim explores the powerful and often deeply personal motivations that compelled both Union and Confederate soldiers to continue fighting, even in the face of death, devastating wounds and unimaginable hardship. Drawing from numerous letters and diaries of Civil War soldiers, he helps us understand not just how the war was fought, but why it was endured. S12 E12 Alzheimer's: A Science and History Perspective
2025/12/15
In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is Dr. Todd Goldberg. Todd and I became friends back in junior high and high school, but after graduation, life took us in different directions and unfortunately we lost touch. In recent years, however, we reconnected through this podcast after he heard our episode on the Amazing Kreskin. I’m genuinely grateful for that reconnection and very pleased to be speaking with my friend today. Dr. Goldberg is a board-certified internal medicine and geriatric specialist, currently serving as an associate professor at Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia and chief of geriatric medicine at Jefferson Abington Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania. He has been recognized for many years as a “Top Doctor” in geriatrics by Philadelphia Magazine, reflecting his deep experience caring for older adults and for families navigating complex medical challenges. One of the central topics of our conversation today is Alzheimer’s disease—its history, the science behind it and what it means for patients and families. This is a subject that is very close to home for me. My mother lived with Alzheimer’s disease, and the impact on her—and on our entire family—was profound. That experience has shaped my interest in understanding the disease more deeply. Dr. Goldberg brings both medical expertise and a compassionate, human perspective to this discussion, including insight into the very real challenges caregivers face and the importance of awareness around the support and resources available to them. In addition to his medical work, he is also an accomplished writer and dedicated history enthusiast, having contributed to numerous medical books and journals, as well as several works exploring the classic comic strip Prince Valiant in the Days of King Arthur and other history-related comics. Today’s conversation brings together medicine, history and lived experience in a way that I believe is both important and deeply meaningful. S12 E10 Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm
2025/11/17
In this episode of Your History Your Story, our guest is Julie Kresge, the Marketing and Media Coordinator for Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. For more than 30 years, my family has created wonderful memories visiting Quiet Valley’s “Old Time Christmas” program — an annual tradition that truly captures the warmth and spirit of the season. That is why we are especially honored to share the story of this remarkable historic site. Quiet Valley is a working historical farm that transports you to the 19th century — and even earlier — through its many year-round programs. In addition to “Old Time Christmas”, which includes a live nativity, visitors can enjoy “Farm Animal Frolic,” “Spooky Days on the Farm,” “Harvest Festival” and many other interesting and exciting activities. A visit to Quiet Valley feels like you are stepping into another time — you can walk among the barns and fields, meet costumed interpreters and even visit a one-room schoolhouse where you can sing songs and experience what it was like to be in school more than 130 years ago. Join us as we speak with Julie about the fascinating history of Quiet Valley — a farm with roots reaching back to the 1700’s, when its earliest residents included a former Hessian soldier from the American Revolution — and learn how this special place continues to bring the past to life for visitors of all ages. Welcome to Your History Your Story! Today, our guest is Leora O’Carroll—an Emmy-nominated writer, producer and accomplished musician. Leora is here to talk about the 2019 book she co-authored with her mother Maureen, titled: “Maureen O’Carroll: A Musical Memoir of an Irish Immigrant Childhood”. Guided by the values of her parents in a household filled with resilience, community and a love of music, Maureen went on to become an acclaimed cellist, performing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles around the world. S12 E5 The Buried Truth of Captain Kidd
2025/09/01
Today on Your History Your Story, we’re joined by Samuel Marquis, acclaimed author of numerous American history and suspense books, including “Blackbeard: The Birth of America”. Samuel is here to talk about his latest work, “Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal”. While many people remember William Kidd as one of history’s most notorious pirates, he was in fact a respected privateer, merchant and wartime hero who made his home in colonial New York City in the late 1600’s. Samuel—who happens to be Kidd’s nine-time great-grandson—shares the real story of a man far more complex than legend suggests and who ultimately became a scapegoat for powerful political forces.
