38. Wear Your Scars Beautifully
2022/01/14
On Feb 3rd 2020 four year old Rawkee Hunt was in an accident and was severely burned on her face and legs. It didn’t take long for Rawkee and her mom Megan, to turn such a tragic time into a positive calling on their life… they quickly opted to help other individuals and families affected by burns and trauma.
They have created a community of love and support for people going through the unimaginable; by providing care packages they call RAW boxes, creating inspiring videos, and starting the RAW Challenge which encourages others to share their stories of hardship and triumph. On this episode we speak with Meghan, and her daughter Rawkee, who started the organization R.A.W. (Real Authentic Warriors) . At 5 years old, Rawkee is our cutest and youngest guest to date.
Some points we touch on throughout our discussion are: the importance of finding a cause you’re personally connected with, remembering your “why”, and what it means to wear your scars beautifully.

37. Fostering Hope With Love
2021/09/15
It is estimated that around 424,00 children are in the foster care system, on any given day in the United States. For the foster parents that house these kids, they are often told mere hours prior to the child arriving and have little to no time to prepare.
This means, there can be a serious lack of supplies and essentials catered towards that child’s specific needs. Who was able to discover this issue and start the fight to fix it?
We sat down with Allie Roth in her home in Portland, Oregon and talked all about ‘With Love’, the organization Allie founded in 2013.
Allie was working as a school teacher that year when one of her students, April, had disclosed to her that she had lived in the three different foster homes within a few months. When Allie wanted to help provide clothing and school supplies, she realized that outside resources for under-school-age kids were hard to find.
She proceeded on a mission to bridge the gap with a group of friends, and within 6 months, they had provided more than 20 families with vital items they needed for child care. Today, ‘With Love’ supports 120 Portland foster families each month with vital resources such as diapers, blankets, books, and sunscreen.
Some topics we cover in this episode include: why it’s important to look for the unserved while building a nonprofit, donors as your greatest advocates, and Allie takes us behind the scenes of what being a foster parent is like.

36. Defending the Vulnerable
2021/06/29
The World Health Organization states that about one in six adults (from age 60 and older) have experienced some form of abuse in community settings (like nursing homes and other long term care facilities) during this past year.
This number has been steadily increasing with the rise of the age of the global population. The elderly can be harmed in many ways including: financially, mentally and physically. So who is taking their time and effort to protect this vulnerable population?
We sat down with Carole Herman, founder and president of Foundation Aiding the Elderly (F.A.T.E. for short), at their office in Sacramento, California.
Carole, a successful business woman, founded FATE in 1982. FATE’s mission is to assure elders are treated with care, dignity and the utmost respect during their final years when they can no longer take care of themselves. They do so by providing education, advocacy, tools, help families with reporting abuse, legal action, raising funds, and so much more.
On this episode we talk: avoiding elder abuse - how to protect your loved ones, the number one reason behind this neglect, and an untimely death - how losing a loved one propelled Carole into this line of work.

35. Friends to Co-Founders - A Journey From Cancer to Service
2021/06/22
Only months away from her dream wedding, Chelsea Kunde found out she had Hodgkins Lymphoma. Treatment was started and the effects of that treatment came: including hair loss. Chelsea’s bridesmaids, and lifelong friends, stepped up and decided to raise money to buy Chelsea her own wig to wear at her wedding.
Fast forward to today and not only did Chelsea beat cancer but has now joined her friends in starting an organization that provides wigs for people like Chelsea, experiencing medical hair loss.
The organization is called Wigged Out Inc. and is located in Phoenix, Arizona. We sat down with Chelsea in her home and had the opportunity to ask her about all the ins and outs of this organization.
In this episode we talk about: getting into business with friends (the ground rules you need to put in place first), misconceptions about hair loss, and the art of fearless fundraising (be bold, be alpha, and trust your mission).

34. Mental Health in the Medical Community
2021/06/15
Finding the time, space and support to ensure you have physical and mental well-being can be extremely hard in our fast-paced, high pressure society...and that was before a global pandemic shocked the world. Communities, healthcare workers, moms, teenagers, everyone was at a higher risk of struggling to be healthy and feel happy. So how can individuals and communities be lifted up and find this kind of support?
We sat down with Dr. Mara Windsor in her home in Paradise Valley, Arizona. She is the founder and President of Living in Fulfilled Enlightenment or L.I.F.E for short.
The purpose of LIFE is to create a community that helps members: deal with stressors, maintain wellness and happiness, while teaching self care. They do this by hosting a variety of monthly events (from Pickleball tournaments to yoga to mentoring sessions) and inviting guest speakers who are experts in different wellness topics to share their knowledge and tips.
Some topics we cover in this discussion are: the three pillars needed to sustain happiness, fulfillment and meaning in life, the stigma of mental health in the medical community and manifesting your goals and desires.

33. Leading With Kindness
2021/06/08
For single moms it can be extremely hard to find the time, money and resources in order to start or finish a higher education. According to the Stanford Social Innovation Review 1.7 million single moms are enrolled in college but only 8% graduate and get a degree.
Megan McLindon knew that struggle personally, and realized how an education could be life changing for her and her kids. So in 2020 she started Mom ofKinds.
Mom ofKinds is an organization that provides single moms with financial assistance and community support to complete a college education. We were able to sit down with Megan in her home and discuss this organization.
Some of our conversation highlights include: easing the nonprofit burden by going one step at a time, stating your needs out loud, and deciding what passion to follow by focusing on what keeps you up at night.

32. Sex Trafficking Minors in the U.S.
2021/06/01
Child sex trafficking is the fastest-growing crime in the world with Texas having the second highest reported number of child sex-trafficking cases in the United States. On record over 79,000 young adults and minors have been sex trafficked in Texas.
The Refuge for domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST for short) was founded outside of Austin, Texas by Brooke Crowder in 2013. This nonprofit was made in order to fund the Refuge Ranch. The ranch is a 23 building, $7.5 million residential therapeutic community for girls who range from young children to young adults. Here, the girls receive holistic, trauma informed care and have access to multiple therapeutic services.
Brooke (the organization’s founder) was unavailable during our time in Texas but luckily, Steven Phenix, Director of PR and communications was able to speak with us about this incredible organization and to shed some light on this difficult subject.
On this episode we discuss: the signs of someone being sex trafficked, breaking down some of the most common sex-trafficking lies/misconceptions and the importance of just one positive adult in a child’s life.

31. Your Scars Can Heal Wounds
2021/05/25
Creating a safe and accepting environment for minority women was something Laketa Smith dreamed of doing in her community. She realized that there was a lack of this type of support and decided to step up and make positive change herself. So, in 2018 Laketa founded A Bella LaFemme Society in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Their mission is to provide collegiate minority women with scholarships in order to promote mental wellness. They aim to empower, advocate, reduce traumas, and alleviate hardships through the means of building resourceful sisterhoods within their community. In support of increasing overall safety among women, they also provide free self defense/gun safety courses and have a “shop for free” boutique.
During this conversation we talk about: scholarships as a love offering, helping others heal through the “back door” approach, and supporting your community through vulnerability.

30. Teddy Bears in Times of Desperation
2021/05/18
Over 438,000 children are currently in the foster care system nationwide, with the median age of those children being 6 ½ years old, according to the Children's Bureau. These children are removed from situations of intense physical and emotional abuse, often in a quick manner, resulting in the child having little to no possessions of their own and a huge lack of control and power over their situation. Who knows the hardships of these children and is attempting to meet their needs?
Dee Robinson (founder) and Wendi LeMoine (executive director) welcomed us to the office of Braveheart Children in Need in Baton Rouge Louisiana. Braveheart's goal is to provide comfort and some sense of control to children who are pulled out of their homes and into the foster care system.
They do this by supplying brand new backpacks filled with: toys, hygiene products, school supplies, stuffed animals and more, to the social work agencies responsible for finding new homes for the foster children. Each backpack is carefully designed and filled specifically for each gender and age group from kindergarteners to teenagers.
In this episode we hear about the hardships these children endure, yet how Braveheart is working tirelessly to uplift them during the unimaginable. Wendi also touches on the two main ingredients needed for anybody wanting to start their own organization.

28. This Bike’s for ME?
2021/05/11
Can you imagine what it would be like as a child to have extremely limited mobility, yet needing and wanting to be active and get exercise? For many disabled children this scenario rings true; leaving them often excluded from outdoor play and activity with kids their age. So, how can this problem be solved?
The McLindon Family Foundation, founded by Andrew McLindon, provides adaptive bikes to children with special needs FOR FREE all over the US. Their goal is to help children maximize their potential and participation in society. Hundreds of these bikes have been given to children helping them build core strength, get a confidence boost and have more engagement with kids their age through the use of adaptive bikes!
We had the great pleasure of sitting down with Andrew in his own personal podcast studio near The McLindon Family Foundation office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In this episode we share our conversation with Andrew and talk about: connecting to your donors, the three core values Andrew thinks everyone should live by and why Andrew got so excited that he lost his voice yelling in his car.

27. Girl Power for Horsepower
2021/05/04
Equine therapy has been an up and coming approach that utilizes horses in the therapeutic process for disabilities such as: autism, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, anxiety, depression, developmental delays and scoliosis. In recent years more equine therapy centers are popping up but unfortunately there are still some misconceptions about how this therapy is done and just how effective it can be.
We got the pleasure of visiting Gaitway Therapeutic Horsemanship in St Gabriel Louisiana and chatting with FOUR amazing female leaders. Our “panel” of ladies includes: Alea (executive director), Brianna (certified instructor), Marlena (therapeutic instructor) and Mallory (volunteer coordinator).
For over 15 years Gaitway has been serving adults and children with disabilities as one of the few certified equine therapy centers in Louisiana. They provide accredited therapists and instructors to help the riders build physical, emotional and occupational growth through interactions with, and care of, the horses.
