Smart Moves or Costly Mistakes? Your Retirement Questions, Answered
2026/04/20
Retirement isn't just about how much you've saved. It's about the decisions you make once you get there.
In this Q&A episode of the Providence Financial Retirement Show, we tackle some of the biggest (and most misunderstood) retirement questions that can have a massive impact on your long-term income and peace of mind.
Should you delay Social Security - or take it as soon as possible?
The answer depends on more than just age. We walk through how longevity, spousal benefits, and income needs can shift the math, sometimes making delay incredibly valuable, and other times making early claiming the better move.
Do Roth conversions really make sense?
Paying taxes now to save later isn't always an easy decision. We break down when Roth conversions can help reduce future tax burdens, avoid higher brackets, and create flexibility, and when they may not be worth it.
What happens if the market drops right after you retire, even if you've saved $1M+?
This is one of the biggest fears retirees face. We explain sequence-of-returns risk, why early losses can have an outsized impact, and how having the right income strategy can help you avoid panic and stay on track.
These are the kinds of decisions that don't have one-size-fits-all answers; but getting them wrong can be costly. This episode is designed to help you think through the trade-offs so you can make more confident, informed choices. Listen in.

The Ticking Time Bomb of Retirement Taxes
2026/04/13
Most retirees think taxes are something you "deal with later." But that mindset can quietly create one of the biggest financial risks in retirement.
In this episode of the Providence Financial Retirement Show, we break down what we call the ticking tax time bomb - the buildup of pre-tax retirement savings that can lead to rising required minimum distributions, unexpected tax brackets, and even higher taxes on Social Security and Medicare costs.
You'll learn why traditional "tax-deferred" savings strategies may create long-term consequences, and how proactive planning can help you take control instead of reacting later. We also discuss how Roth conversions and smart withdrawal planning can help you manage taxes across your retirement, not just in one year.
This is not about avoiding taxes. It's about controlling when and how you pay them so you can keep more of what you've worked for. Listen in.

Retirement in Uncertain Times
2026/04/06
Last week, we talked about war and market volatility. But what if the biggest risks to your retirement aren't the headlines at all?
In this episode, we go a level deeper, uncovering the less obvious forces shaping your financial future right now. From rising energy costs and persistent inflation to interest rates and global instability, these underlying shifts can quietly impact your income, your expenses, and how long your money lasts.
We also tackle some of the most important questions retirees are asking today:
- How do you know if you're truly ready to retire?
- What does it really mean to turn savings into reliable income?
- When is the right time to claim Social Security?
- How can taxes impact your retirement more than you expect?
The truth is, retirement isn't about how much you've saved; it's about how your money works for you. And in uncertain times, clarity around your income strategy becomes more important than ever. If you're looking to move from uncertainty to confidence, this episode will help you connect the dots and see the bigger picture. Listen in.

War, Volatility and Your Retirement
2026/03/30
With global tensions rising and headlines dominated by war, uncertainty, and market swings, it's no surprise that many retirees are feeling uneasy. Watching your portfolio dip hits differently when you're no longer earning a paycheck. It's not just numbers anymore, it's your income, your lifestyle, and your future.
But here's the real question: is the current volatility actually the problem… or is it simply revealing something deeper?
In this episode, we cut through the noise and focus on what truly matters. We break down how markets typically respond to geopolitical events, why uncertainty creates volatility, and what history shows us about these moments over time.
More importantly, we uncover the real risk retirees face - one that has far less to do with headlines and far more to do with how a retirement plan is structured. From the dangers of relying on market performance for income, to the impact of sequence of returns risk and emotional decision-making, this conversation brings clarity to what can feel overwhelming.
Because in uncertain times, the right strategy makes all the difference. Listen in.

When Diversification Falls Short
2026/03/09
Retirement changes everything about how your portfolio works. During your working years, you're adding money and riding out market ups and downs. But once you retire, the strategy flips; you're taking money out, and market downturns can suddenly become much more dangerous.
In this episode of the Providence Financial Retirement Show, we discuss why preparing for retirement risk before it appears is critical to protecting your future income. We explain the shift from accumulation to distribution, why the stock market should never be considered a "safe haven," and how retirees can create more stability by focusing on income-producing investments.
You'll also hear answers to listener questions about whether Treasury yields are a good place to park retirement money, the important differences between owning individual bonds and bond funds, and why many portfolios that appear diversified may actually be more fragile than investors realize.

You Can't Retire on Assets - Only on Income
2026/02/23
You don't retire on account balances. You retire on income.
Many retirees feel uneasy as retirement approaches, even when they've saved and invested responsibly for decades. The issue isn't how much you've accumulated. It's whether your assets have been converted into reliable income.
In this episode, you'll learn:
- Why growth investing alone may not work in retirement
- When to begin shifting from accumulation to income
- The psychological shift from saving to spending
- Why withdrawals create anxiety and income creates confidence
- How to replace your job paycheck with a portfolio paycheck
If your retirement depends on market performance, you may feel uncertain. But when your portfolio produces dependable income through interest and dividends, retirement can feel steady again. Listen in.

Social Security Mistakes to Avoid
2026/02/16
Social Security isn't just a filing decision. It's a lifetime income strategy.
In this episode of the Providence Financial Retirement Show, we break down how Social Security decisions affect not only your monthly check, but your taxes, your spouse's income, and your long-term financial security.
You'll learn:
- Why filing too early can permanently reduce lifetime household income
- How survivor benefits really work (and why many widows lose a check)
- What spousal benefits mean for couples (and why they're not automatic)
- How recent rule changes may increase benefits for some retirees
- Why up to 85% of your Social Security can become taxable
- The most common mistakes retirees make, simply because no one explained the system clearly
We also share real-life examples of retirees who unknowingly missed benefits for years - not because of bad investing, but because of overlooked planning details.
Social Security has more moving parts than most people realize. When coordinated properly with your investments, withdrawals, and taxes, it can become a powerful foundation for retirement income. When it's not, it can quietly cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars over time.

Retirement Assumptions that Can Cost You
2026/02/09
Most retirement stress doesn't come from bad decisions. It comes from bad assumptions. In this week's episode of the podcast, we explain why these common beliefs can quietly put pressure on your retirement:
• that spending will automatically go down
• that markets will always average out
• that Social Security will fill the gaps
What works during your working years doesn't always work once income depends on withdrawals. Learn why structure - not prediction - is the key to a more confident, less stressful retirement.
Listen now and rethink the assumptions shaping your plan.

Retirement Myths That Don't Survive in Real Life
2026/02/02
Why do you believe what you believe about retirement? Spoiler: it's probably not because it's true; but because you've heard it repeated over and over.
In this week's show, we challenge the most repeated (and most dangerous) retirement assumptions. The 4% rule, "taxes go down" in retirement, "we'll adjust later," and the idea that markets always come back all sound comforting… until real life shows up. We'll break down why these beliefs deserve a closer look, what actually holds up under pressure, and answer listener questions along the way. Expect a few surprises.

Set It and Forget It? Not in Retirement
2026/01/26
Many retirement plans are built with a "set it and forget it" mindset. As long as account balances look steady, it's easy to assume everything is working. But retirement doesn't work that way.
In this episode, we talk about why the biggest risk in retirement isn't always a market drop. It's the false sense of security that comes from calm markets and stable-looking statements. Real stability isn't tested when things are quiet. It's tested when income is needed, expenses continue, and markets don't cooperate.
We explain why retirement planning can't be passive, why income matters more than balance, and why a plan that isn't reviewed and adjusted can quietly create uncertainty instead of freedom. Because in retirement, "set it and forget it" can be one of the most expensive assumptions you make. Listen in.

Rethinking the 3-Bucket Strategy in Retirement
2026/01/19
The "3-bucket strategy" is one of the most commonly used frameworks in retirement planning. Growth, conservative, and cash buckets may sound simple, but the rules governing how they work change dramatically once you retire.
Most traditional 3-bucket strategies are built around one core assumption: that retirement income will be generated by selling assets. The cash bucket is meant to be spent down, the conservative bucket tapped next, and the growth bucket left untouched until markets recover and refill the others. The problem? Retirement doesn't always give you the luxury of waiting for markets to cooperate. When volatility hits, investors may be forced to sell assets at the worst possible time.
In this episode, we break down why a retirement plan that depends on asset sales requires a very different bucket structure than one designed to generate income.
