Equalization Myths vs Facts: Canada and the World | Dwight Heck
2026/10/20
How does equalization work in Canada, and who really pays for it? In this solo episode, Dwight Heck pulls the real numbers and tests four common myths, including the claim that Alberta writes a cheque to Quebec.
Dwight, a financial and life coach with 24 years in the industry, explains the formula, shows what Albertans and British Columbians pay in federal tax and what comes back, and compares Canada with Germany, Switzerland, Australia and the United States. Every number in the episode has a source in the show notes.
What you will learn:
How the equalization formula works and who actually pays for it
What Alberta and British Columbia pay in federal tax per resident, and what comes back
Why scrapping equalization would not give Alberta its money back
How Germany, Switzerland, Australia and the United States handle the same problem
Three takeaways for separating the feeling from the formula

2026/10/13
RAN AWAY TO THE CIRCUS, THEN HIT BOTTOM | DAVE LETTERFLY KNODERER
This alcoholism recovery story starts with a teenager who ran away to join the circus as a drummer. Dave Letterfly Knoderer joins Dwight Heck to talk about his horses, his art, hitting bottom with alcohol, and the hope he found in recovery and writing.
Dave is a circus performer, liberty horse trainer, airbrush muralist, motorcycle pinstriper and author of five books. He grew up in Ohio as the son of a Lutheran minister and the younger brother of a boy nobody understood. From a comedy act with a little black mule to a seven-month route painting at Harley-Davidson dealerships, his career took many detours, and recovery changed his relationship with his father and with himself.
What you will learn:
How a teenager ran away to join the circus and built a creative life from drums, paint and horses
What hitting bottom with alcohol looked like, and how recovery changed Dave
How a moral inventory became the start of his writing and five published books

The RRSP Refund Is Not a Gift | RRSP vs TFSA vs FHSA
2026/10/06
RRSP vs TFSA vs FHSA: which one is right for you? In this solo episode, Dwight Heck explains how the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA), non-registered account and First Home Savings Account (FHSA) really work in Canada, and why the refund that feels like a gift is actually a deferral.
Dwight, a financial and life coach with 24 years in the industry, walks through the tax on the way in and the tax on the way out, the Old Age Security (OAS) clawback, and how interest, dividends and capital gains are taxed. American listeners get a short map of the 401(k) and the Roth Individual Retirement Account (Roth IRA). Before any account, he says, comes the plan.
What you will learn:
Why the RRSP refund is a deferral and the one question that decides if it is a good deal
How the TFSA, FHSA and non-registered account are taxed differently from the RRSP
How RRSP withdrawals can trigger the OAS clawback and why TFSA withdrawals do not
How interest, dividends and capital gains are taxed in a non-registered account
How the 401(k) and Roth IRA compare for American listeners
Two questions to ask any advisor before you open an account

From Drugs at 13 to a $10 Billion Exit | Daryl Dittmer
2026/09/29
FROM DRUGS AT 13 TO A $10 BILLION EXIT, WITH DARYL DITTMER
What does it take to go from a 13-year-old already deep into drugs and alcohol to becoming the second-largest shareholder in a company that sold for nearly $10 billion? Daryl Dittmer joins Dwight Heck to share the origin story behind his sales career and exit.
Raised in a blue-collar family outside Detroit, Daryl faced a crossroads in his late teens: get help, or walk away from his family. He landed in sales almost by accident, became a top producer, and eventually earned enough ownership to become the company’s second-largest shareholder. He has since built and exited several businesses of his own, and now runs Show Up Coaching and the free webinar Show Up, Built to Win.
What you will learn:
Why the most crucial lessons come from what you jettison, not what you collect
How a teenage crossroads forced a choice between getting help or losing his family
How he became a top producer and eventually a company’s second-largest shareholder
Why showing up every day matters more than talent
Why your past does not get final say over your future unless you let it

2026/09/22
WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T COME HOME — THE PURPOSE RULES, PART 3 OF 3
What happens if you get injured, get a diagnosis that changes everything, or do not come home one day? In the final part of The Purpose Rules, Dwight Heck covers Steps 4 and 5 of his five-step coaching process: protect what you are building, and the savings rule.
Dwight shares one of the most personal stories he has told on the show, a three-year period during his divorce with no life insurance at all, after an advisor more concerned with his own commission talked him out of options that would have kept coverage in place. He also finishes the real story of clients John and Sally, from $40,000 in debt to a protected retirement, and what happened 14 years after they put their plan in place.
This is Part 3 of a 3-part series. If you have not heard Parts 1 and 2, start from the beginning to get the full framework.
What you will learn:
Why protection is the step that turns a setback into a catastrophe
What protection means beyond life insurance

He Chose His Kids Over Seven Figures, Dwight Heck On Fatherhood
2026/08/04
Eight years into joint custody, one question from his own kid changed everything. Dwight Heck closes his three-part solo arc with the decision that was never about his body or his career; it was about the kind of father he was going to be.
Dwight starts with his own father, present as a provider but largely absent as a communicator, the same pattern he found himself repeating with his own kids during his first business, until a lightbulb moment led him to take every summer off. The harder decision came later. During one of their near nightly phone calls, one of his kids asked when they got a say in where they lived, and when enough was enough. Dwight said now, and went and got them, choosing to become the present father he never had over pushing a successful financial business toward a seven figure income.
In this episode you will hear:
✅ Why Dwight's relationship with his own father shaped the kind of father he decided to become
✅ The exact phone call, eight years into joint custody, that changed everything
✅ Why he chose to shelve a seven figure business dream to become a present, engaged father
✅ What being present actually looked like day to day, from savings baggies to a roller blades deal
✅ How raising five kids largely on his own shaped the financial coach he is today
✅ How this decision closes the thread running through all three decisions in this solo arc

About Dwight Heck: Dwight Heck is a financial and life coach, and career coach, licensed in Alberta and British Columbia, host of the Give A Heck Podcast, and the Amazon bestselling author of Give A Heck: How to Live Life on Purpose and Not by Accident. After living paycheck to paycheck as a single father of five, he built a career and a show around helping people live intentionally instead of by accident.
He Bet On Himself Twice, Dwight Heck On Reinvention
2026/07/28
He talked his way into fixing a mainframe he had no training for. Nine years later, a health crisis forced the career change that would define the rest of his life.
In this solo episode, Dwight Heck continues the Not by Accident: Three Decisions arc with the story of the professional risk that reshaped everything. Before the mainframe, there was an earlier bet on himself at fifteen and sixteen, an early lesson in entrepreneurship that failed before it ever really started, once he ran the actual cost math. That lesson mattered when, fresh out of an electronics engineering diploma, Dwight volunteered to fix a mainframe connection problem he had no formal training to solve, working until 2 a.m. multiple nights to get it done.
Nine years into a leadership role with no real work-life balance, after a grueling client contract and five days without sleep, Dwight's body gave out. He was diagnosed with Bell's palsy, a health crisis serious enough to leave him temporarily unable to drive or fully care for his kids during his joint custody time. That crisis forced the career change into finance, and years later, that decision helped one couple go from ninety days away from financial ruin to their first paid vacation in over a decade.
In this episode you will hear:
✅ Why a side hustle at fifteen and sixteen failed before it even started
✅ How Dwight talked his way into fixing a mainframe he had no training to solve
✅ Why nine years in IT consulting, and a leadership role with no real work-life balance, meant one happy client for every nine who were not
✅ What a five day stretch without sleep on a single contract actually cost him
✅ What happened the day Bell's palsy hit, and what the recovery required
✅ Why a friend's mention of finance was not what actually convinced him to make the leap
✅ What that career change produced years later for one couple he coached

They Predicted My Breaking Point. Here's What Happened
2026/07/21
At fourteen, doctors and well-meaning adults told Dwight Heck what his body would never let him do. Decades later, an injured Achilles tendon couldn't stop him from hiking Zion's Narrows.
In this solo episode, Dwight tells a story he has never shared on the podcast before: severe, uncontrolled asthma as a child, a scoliosis diagnosis at 13, and choosing a caged steel body brace over spinal surgery at 14, worn twenty-three hours a day for almost three years. He explains why tenacity is a superpower, how a paper route at 12 proved it, and why an injury three weeks before a planned hike through The Narrows in Zion National Park was never going to stop him from going. This is Part 1 of a new three-part solo arc, Not by Accident: Three Decisions.
In this episode you'll hear:
✅ Why severe asthma before rescue inhalers existed shaped a childhood
✅ How a scoliosis diagnosis at 13 led to a three-year choice between surgery and a brace
✅ What wearing a caged body brace twenty-three hours a day actually involved
✅ Why well-meaning caution from adults can do as much damage as a diagnosis
✅ How a paper route at 12 became proof that tenacity is a superpower
✅ Why an injured Achilles tendon didn't stop a hike through Zion's Narrows
✅ What to do with your own version of a ceiling someone else handed you

She Froze in Her Interview: Janylène Turcotte on the Subconscious Mind
2026/07/14
Your subconscious mind is running your decisions, and most people have no idea. Janylène Turcotte spent 25 years as a senior HR executive, the last eight as National Talent Director at Deloitte. She coached hundreds of people through high-stakes interviews. Then her corporate career ended on someone else’s terms, and three days later she sat down for a VP interview at a bank and could not answer a single question.
That frozen moment cracked open the gap between knowing and doing, and launched her into a second career as a clinical hypnotherapist trained in Rapid Transformational Therapy under Marisa Peer. JT has now completed over 1,500 sessions with entrepreneurs and senior leaders. Her method, Peel Back, Rewire, Rise, is built on the conviction that you cannot rewire what you have not first peeled back. The Peel Back step, accessing the unconscious stories driving your behaviour, is the step most coaches skip.
What you will learn:
Why knowing is not the same as doing and what actually lives in the gap
What a frozen interview reveals about the unconscious beliefs running your life
How nine years of sobriety taught JT more about the mind than any certification
Why the Peel Back step is the one most coaches skip and why that matters
Why she lost more friends when she stopped fawning than when she stopped drinking
The two fears that block most transformations: fear of being alone and fear of judgement
