Valerie is the author of That Construction Worker is My Mom, she began her career as a laborer for her father when she was seven years old and continued through high school. She grew up spending a lot of time on construction sites and developed a passion for working with her hands. She chose to follow her heart instead of listening to others who told her she should choose a job more suited for women.  Valerie proved them wrong, working as the Regional AMERS Preconstruction Lead for Microsoft supporting Data Center Development. She has worked in a variety of construction markets such as Hewlett Packard, Apple, Google, and other major corporations.  Yes, Moms can be construction workers are important words that Valerie often uses and helped her write her children's book to inspire and give exposure to the female workforce.  Support the show

We are talking to Pam in this week's episode. Pam shares her story and insights about working in a male-dominated industry so that she can help encourage women who are looking for a career change to consider the skilled trades. Pam is one of Build A Dreams Her Power Tools Winner and has participated in our Trade Campus as a speaker.  Pam is a 50-year-old, second career, apprentice machinist, with a strong interest in teaching.  Pam's passions have always been working with tools and being creative. Her early career path included finance, manufacturing, and health and wellness. In her forties, Pam pivoted to start a new career as a Machinist and describes the decision as being both scary and exciting, but definitely worth the effort.  You won't want to miss Pam's amazing story in our latest episode of Perfectly Unfiltered. Robyn is 25 years old and started plumbing two years ago and has worked for two plumbing companies since the beginning of her career. The company she currently works for has about 40 employees, with her being the only girl aside from the women who work in the office. She had done many different types of jobs since joining the workforce, and finally found plumbing by accident, but it ended up being a job she loves. Amanda is currently in the third year of her undergraduate degree studying kinesiology and physical education at the University of Toronto. She works at a conductive education school for youth with cerebral palsy and other motor conditions where they integrate the Ontario curriculum with the physical therapy needs of each child, as well she is working with a professor at UofT to find ways to foster quality participation and make playgrounds more socially inclusive for kids with disabilities. On top of this, she has a placement at a non-profit and started her own business. She really wanted to merge her love of cute accessories and her passion for helping individuals with disabilities, so she started creating necklaces with the option of adding a magnetic clasp for individuals that struggle with fine motor skills. "I know putting on a necklace is a small thing, but I hope to help people gain a sense of independence and change the way we think about inclusivity and fashion. My goal is to make the world a little more inclusive, one necklace at a time." Avery is 16 years old and a grade 11 student. Megan has a masters in electrical engineering technology and has spent her professional career working in design and being the GC of large data center construction site. Recently she has quit her job and moved to San Diego to pursue a side hustle using her drone.
