Description

A "must-listen-to" podcast on dating abuse and domestic violence, also known as intimate partner violence. . Hosted by Bill Mitchell, author of the memoir, WHEN DATING HURTS (Amazon), this book is about the murder of his daughter by her ex-boyfriend. Bill and his wife, Michele, lost Kristin to dating violence. She was brutally murdered in June 2005, just 20 days after her college graduation. FACT: 1 in 3 WOMEN suffer serious physical violence at the hands of intimate partners during their lifetimes. Typically, it happens between the ages of 16-24. But can happen at any age. It doesn't need to happen.  Bill interviews experts with key experiences in dating and domestic violence: • Actual survivors of intimate partner violence (dating abuse and domestic violence) • "DV" agency counselors • Law enforcement professionals • Parents of children who were either lost to, or somehow survived, dating violence After listening to the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, be sure to share it with those who need to hear it... Remember the 1 in 3 women statistic. It is real. The WHEN DATING HURTS memoir (paperback, eBook, audiobook) is only available on Amazon. Bill Mitchell's email: [email protected] The WHEN DATING HURTS website is HERE.

2026/04/21
This episode contains descriptions of emotional abuse. It's not suitable for all audiences, especially those sensitive to themes of dating violence or domestic abuse. Listener discretion is advised. The WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast focuses on authentic experiences without sensationalism. Our goal is to educate on the many forms of abuse in relationships to promote safer lives. We avoid judgments and encourage empathy for survivors navigating complex ups and downs. Sarah Hanson's true story exposes the classic red flags of emotional and domestic abuse in a relationship—from early warning signs she ignored to escalating manipulative behaviors such as gaslighting. The relationship she had with her partner helped her realize she had also had similar experiences emotionally dealing with her father when she was growing up at home. This survivor account reveals how abusers groom, control, and manipulate. Once free from her abuser, Sarah was able to reclaim her life and move on. She channeled her pain and recovery into a new book that has a release date of April 28, 2026. "Conjuring the Hurricane" can be found at all major book outlets. Key Insights on Abuser Tactics — Real-life examples of manipulation, love-bombing followed by devaluation, isolation, and post-separation abuse that many survivors face long after leaving. Building Empathy & Awareness — A compassionate, blame-free exploration of the challenges domestic violence and narcissistic abuse survivors endure, ideal for anyone seeking to understand intimate partner violence. In-Depth Multi-Part Series — This is Part 2 of 2, diving deep into Sarah's journey from an abusive relationship, through her escape, to the long road of healing and reclaiming her life. If you're experiencing intimate partner abuse, coercive control, or narcissistic abuse—or if you suspect someone you care about is—Mae's story offers critical perspective on spotting red flags early, breaking free, and finding support. You're not alone, and recognizing the patterns can be the first step toward safety and recovery. Domestic violence resources are available 24/7—reach out if you need help. If you have ever tried to think positive and felt nothing shift, Dr Joe explains why that happens and what your body is actually doing instead. Most of us are unknowingly running 95% of our lives from subconscious programs rooted in the past, and our bodies quite literally cannot accept thoughts that contradict what they have already been conditioned to feel. 332. Escaping the Conveyor Belt of Chaos: Two Abuse Survivor Stories
2026/04/16
Content Warning & Disclaimer These stories contain detailed accounts of emotional abuse, psychological abuse, and narcissistic abuse. They include descriptions of alcohol and drug misuse. Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised. I offered to listeners who recorded their stories that I would put them into an episode. This is the second time I have done this. It takes plenty of courage to sit with your phone, hit the record button and tell a story of domestic abuse. In this case, two women stepped up and came through. You will hear what they tell us abuse the abuse they suffered in this episode. Stories like these highlight critical warning signs of narcissistic abuse and emotional manipulation. Recognizing these red flags early can help you or someone you love avoid years of pain and escape the “conveyor belt of chaos” that toxic relationships often become. If you’re in an abusive relationship, dealing with trauma from childhood, or supporting someone who is, this episode offers validation, insight, and hope. 326. (Rerelease) J R Waltemyer - Protecting and Enforcing Victims' Rights
2026/04/14
We conducted this interview a few years ago. We decided to bring it back now. It is a valuable discussion on how law enforcement can be helpful years after horrible crimes have taken place. This is worth an investment of your time. J R Waltemyer is a valuable contact at the Office of Victim Advocate (OVA) in Pennsylvania. OVA is the state agency with the authority and duty to advocate for the rights and needs of crime victims. OVA accomplishes their mission through victim services, which includes post-sentencing notifications of offender status and movements within the Department of Corrections and the parole system; restorative justice programs that promote resilience and healing; and they are currently developing new initiatives around crime prevention. OVA envisions a Pennsylvania in which justice thrives. They collaborate closely with fellow state agencies and community groups to develop and promote trauma informed programs. You will find this episode useful if you want to know how the system works to help all survivors of violent crimes.  Bill Mitchell If you're experiencing intimate partner abuse, coercive control, or narcissistic abuse—or if you suspect someone you care about is—Mae's story offers critical perspective on spotting red flags early, breaking free, and finding support. 320. Sharing WHEN DATING HURTS Audiobook Chapters - Pt 2 of 2 Pts
2026/03/24
For a long time, I have wanted to share some chapters from my WHEN DATING HURTS book with you. I am happy to have this for you now. This is part two of a two lengthy episodes. In this case, lengthy means I am sharing a lot... The WHEN DATING HURTS book is a memoir about my daughter Kristin's murder in 2005 due to dating violence. Reviews describe it as having short, gripping chapters that mix raw family story with lessons learned. It's more narrative than structured—think chronological heartbreak plus practical takeaways. If you're interested in this book (that can save lives), find it on Amazon in audiobook, paperback, and e-book. People mostly call it "heartbreaking—like, gut-punch level sad—because it's a dad's raw account of losing his daughter Kristin to dating violence back in 2005". Readers say it hits hard emotionally, leaves them in tears, but also feels eye-opening and urgent. They love how Bill mixes the family's grief with real talk on red flags—like controlling stuff or jealousy—that everyone misses until it's too late. On Amazon it's sitting at 4.9 stars from over a hundred reviews; folks write things like "this book will save lives" or "it stole my heart and educated me." Goodreads averages around 4.5, with people urging parents, teens, even teachers to read it—phrases like "must-read for every parent" or "I feel like I knew Kristin" pop up a lot. And, "It's not just sorrow; it's inspiring too". Readers admire the Mitchells turning pain into advocacy, saying it empowers you to spot abuse early and speak up. They say, "Super recommended if you're into true stories that double as wake-up calls." I hope you read my book. I wrote it for you even though we have never met. We cannot bring back Kristin, but she would want you to live a long life and be happy. Thank you for your attention to the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast. 315. DV Survivors Stories Shared on WHEN DATING HURTS
2026/03/17
Most of the episodes in this podcast are populated with survivors telling their stories. But there are many more survivors who are not prepared to be interviewed and have their full stories heard around the entire world. For this very special episode, we asked survivors to either record or email us stories. The recorded stories include the actual voice of survivors. If survivors emailed us their stories, we used computer-generated voices to tell their stories for them. If you want to tell your story on WHEN DATING HURTS but do not want to be interviewed, either record and send us your narrative to us–or write your story as an email, and we will take it from there. Survivors need to know they are not alone. Your stories are precious because they bring comfort to others, and they influence victims to seek help in recovering their freedom. Thank you for listening to WHEN DATING HURTS.
