Gratian receives food and clothing from the villagers, so that when he turns into a werewolf, he doesn't go after people's sheep.  Much beyond the subject in question itself, this episode draws attention to documentary film as a genre, and how the director Thomas Ciulei proposes a non-colonial gaze to oral history, and non-scientific methods for documenting the life of people. 

Released in the Sundance Film Festival in the cursed year of 2020 as Eight for Silver, The Cursed is a 19th-century victorian gothic folk horror featuring a familiar monster as an allegory for dwelling identities within the same body: the civilized human and the bestial monster. Desaturated color pallettes and muted, modest garments set the tone for foggy gray skies by day, and nightmares inhabited by human scarecrows and silver fangs by night. Directed by Sean Ellis, The Cursed is a suprisingly slow-burn lycanthrope film supernaturally reprimanding white colonialism, extending the legacy of violence to a whole lineage within this small oligarchic society.

A car crash and a new beginning. Carnival of Souls depicts the solitude of provincial living in the southwest United States in the 1960s from the perspective of a woman who also works as a church organ player. Despite her efforts to live a normal life, she is haunted by a ghostly presence that leads her into learning wild secrets about her own existence. This is my season finale, an incredibly interesting series of plot twist coming from many levels fading in and out in style between scenes. The episode contains huge spoilers so I recommend you watch it first. R.I.P.

After an year-long hybernation period, I have returned from the darkness bringing you Apichatpong Weerasethakul's Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, a film that flatens many existences and realms once separated by the restrictions of time, space, and societal norms. A beautiful visual rendering of a book from 1983 called A Man Who Can Recall His Past Lives by Buddhist abbot Phra Sripariyattiwet. A terminal illness thins out otherwise physical barriers of existence as Boonmee navigates through past lives to find reason and understanding. 

Legend goes that the last person to die on New Years' Eve becomes the Coachman in charge of collecting the souls of the dead until someone else takes their place in this nefarious task. The Phantom Carriage is a silent-film from what is known as the Golden Era of Swedish cinema. Directer and Starred by Victor Sjostrom, this classic is a masterclass in special effects and spectral superimposition with the most beautiful soundtrack by Matti Bye.

It's hard to believe this was Remi Week's debut film. His House blurrs the lines of real horror with traditional elements of fictional horror, bringing together an incredibly deep approach to the dichotomic commitments regarding the cultural memory of war refugees. It's delicate, and monstrous simultaneously. You can't miss this. 

Directed by Hideo Nakata, the J-horror masterpiece Ringu was based on a book released a few years earlier and it tells the tale of the vengeful spirit of a child that comes out of the screen to kill you if you watch their Stan Brakhagesque cursed tape! Sadako's aesthetic has become an universal pop culture symbol for fear and the deadly presence of beings from the aftelife in relation to elements familiar to us and present in our daily lives, such as TV devices -- and VHS tapes.  

A new season begins in this Deadly Theremin with one of the most famous films of the horror genre. Directed by Stanley Kubrik and based on a novel with the same name written by Stephen King, The Shining touches classic themes that frightens, in a suspense-building-but-also-already-kind-of-there atmosphere, different generations since its first release. It speaks directly to our most primal fears in a brutal fashion (yes, I am thinking about the elevator of blood). 

A season finale não podia terminar em melhor companhia. Convidei meus grandes amigos de longa data para analisar Bacurau do Kleber Mendonça Filho e Juliano Dornelles. Um filme que vai abordar todos os esqueletos no armário da sociedade brasileira usando a lingua franca dos westerns estado-unidenses, violência e uma trilha sonora incrível.

Simplesmente sensacional! Esse stop-motion de terror chileno que faz alusão aos contos de fadas dos irmãos Grimm, produzido ao longo de cinco anos e contando a narrativa de um membro de uma colonia-seita alemã que ainda existe no Chile, entrou pra lista de melhores filmes que eu já assisti. Os diretores conseguiram criar uma experiência imersiva a partir do rompimento com as barreiras entre figuração plana e volumétrica, sem falar da impressionante manipulação de materiais diante das câmeras por toda a equipe.  

Dirigido por Damien Rugna, que também é o guitarrista da banda Pasco 637 da Argentina, Aterrados é um daqueles filmes que você termina de assistir e tenta lembrar qual foi a última vez que um longa de ficção te fez sentir tanto medo assim. Definitivamente recomendo assistir com alguém do seu lado. A narrativa segue uma linha de suspense investigativo até o por-do-sol, e depois é só atividade maligna demoníaca de universos paralelos. É um episódio com muito spoiler, então cuidado.

Dirigido pelo diretor guatemalteca Jayro Bustamante, esse filme vai se utilizar da lingua franca do terror-ficção-folclore pra abordar o terror-real sofrido por milhares de povos indígenas durante a ditadura militar na Guatemala na segunda metade do século XX. Essa narrativa envolve fantasmas de vítimas do Holocausto Silencioso buscando vingança sob a forma de uma das lendas folclóricas mais antigas e mais conhecidas na America Central e America Latina que é o conto da La Llorona. É um filme intenso, mas maior que isso, é um filme necessário. 

I hope my non-Brazilian fans will forgive me, but this season will be a Brazilian Version, Herbert Richards.   Lançado em 1967 e dirigido, produzido, editado e protagonizado por José Mojica Marins, Esta Noite Reencanarei no Teu Cadáver traz vários elementos contemporâneos e técnicas impressionantes de efeitos especiais para o cenário nacional. É a sequencia do primeiro longa do Mojica Marins e conta a nefasta historia da lendária personagem do Zé do Caixão - que traz uma critica bem contemporânea à sociedade brasileira cristã e suas crenças -, junto claro, de muito grito, morte e o melhor do gore da década de 60. A trilogia mesmo só vai terminar em 2008, com o lançamento da Encarnação do Demônio que marca o fim de uma longa carreira de participações do Zé do Caixão em longas, curtas, programas de televisão etc. Esse episodio é repleto de spoilers então eu recomendo que deixem toda a esperanca, vós que entrais! A missing girl in a strange Scottish village, with uncomfortably happy folk songs, naked dancing and rituals, The Wicker Man is one of those classic films that you can't stop thinking about. It's an extremely unsettling murder mystery with amazing plot twists and a breathtaking climax. This bonus episode was an amazing recommendation from a friend, and I analyzed while having a Guinness, just like the villagers at the landlord's bar. I hope you enjoy it, or not. It's your funeral. 

Four Londoner men decide to go on a hike in memoriam of their friend in Sweden. What could go wrong, you think? Ancient woods are a commonplace for Ancient pagan religions, their followers, and sometimes even the bloodthirsty gods they worship. The cinematography will remind of The Blair Witch Project (which I previously analyzed), and the god behaves like the Lovecraftian Shub-Niggurath taking sacrifices and never leaving the woods. The novel is equally awesome and I definetely recommend it! It pairs really well with a vodka sour, the adventurous drink you put raw egg whites in. Give it a try: on the movie, the novel and the drink. Or not. Whatever. Rest in Peace.
