Episode 71 - Dr. Justin Farnsworth - What's So Corrective About Correctives?
2021/10/26
Corrective Exercise has been a gift and a curse to the industry. Through one lens, it opened up the minds to people who lived in the "No pain, no gain" mentality. On the other side, we are seeing more fragile training than ever where one imperfect squat pattern could result in the explosion of multiple knee ligaments (at least that is what coaches are telling their clients). This is all b******t and needs to stop.
To discuss this topic further, I brought on the resident meathead PT, Dr. Justin Farnsworth. Justin and I discuss corrective exercise, where we think it has a place in training, and more appropriate ways to implement "corrective" changes to someone's program. Not all training has to be fluffy and not all corrective exercise has to be bands and bodyweight.
Episode 70 - Ebenezer Samuel - Programming Quality Content
2021/10/20
The word content gets thrown around a lot when talking about fitness professionals and social media. The idea of content is very vague and can become misconstrued by most the people that are trying to generate it.
On today’s podcast I invited Fitness Director for Men’s Health Magazine, Ebenezer Samuel, to break down the do’s and don’ts when it comes to content.
At the base of all the Content we produce it ultimately boils down to programming. So when you step back and look at your feed, what is the type of programming you are promoting to the people that are taking in your insight?
Does the “content” you are creating resonate with the person you were trying to be.
Listen in to find your voice in programming content production.
Episode 61 - Dr. Justin Farnsworth - Pain Shmayne
2021/08/03
On today’s episode we sit down with Dr. Justin Farnsworth, Director of rehabilitative services for the PPSC. The topic, pain!
Pain is such a prevalent piece of the training puzzle. Unfortunately, most coaches either don’t know how to manage it or are too nervous to even approach it.
Justin breaks down the definition of pain while also identifying what you can do as a coach to help put somebody in a better position to live pain-free!
Episode 54 - Taylor Van De Loo - Managing the Online Experience
2021/06/22
On today’s episode of the podcast we have Taylor Van De Loo, OG for the PPSC and drjohnrusin.com. Taylor is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to managing the online training experience. As a Personaltrainer coming out of college, he was almost thrown directly into this field.
We talk about online programming, some of the things most trainers missed, and why he would ever wear a tank top golfing.
Enjoy!
Episode 53 - Greg Nuckols - Relative Age and Tonka Beans
2021/06/18
Today we get to sit down with Greg Nuckols, who I can best describe as someone who is genuinely interested in fitness. Yes, he has a degree in Exercise Science and holds a few all-time records as a drug free lifter, BIG WHOOP. Greg is an overall fitness library and someone who is a pleasure to talk to and be around.
You may have heard of him from Stronger by Science where himself, Eric Helms, Mike Zourdos, and Eric Trexler put out a monthly publication breaking down the research in specific topic areas to dial in for you. I wanted to ask about that, Greg's research interests, and some of the ways he stays busy in his off time.
From Powerlifting to Cooking!
Episode Breakdown:
2:30 - Reading Research
5:30 - M.A.S.S
14:00 - Journal Sweeping
17:00 - Relative Age
25:00 - Powerlifting
38:30 - Hobbies
43:00 - Cooking
Episode 45 - Brandon Marcello - Recovery Matters
2021/05/21
On today's episode, we are lucky to have time to sit down with one of my favorite sources of recovery information, Brandon Marcello. Brandon has a diverse background in the fitness space between helping create Athlete's Performance which you know today as Exos, Director of Sports Performance at Stanford University, and Director of Performance for USA Softball.
Now, Brandon does a long list of work with specific clients in the performance space and don't think twice that recovery isn't a "performance metric". Today we find out how much sleep you need, what that quality of sleep should look like, and how you can manage your sleep moving forward.
Episode 36 - Clifton Harski - Why Get Strong Though?
2021/04/20
On today's episode we follow up with PPSC Director of Education, Clifton Harski, on his recently released article, "Why Get Strong Though?" Strength development is an obvious answer for most of the clients we interact with but finding the right balance of when to get stronger and when to decide a different goal seems to be a difficult exit to pull off of. This comes down to evaluating two of the keystone pieces of being a coach - programming and coaching.
Episode 34 - Dr. John Rusin - Avoid Bad Sales Tactics
2021/04/13
It's not like you were trying to make a bad impression. Sometimes its easy to get caught up in the wrong trend that could cause irreparable damage to your credibility long term. Building a client base can be a fairly stressful process no matter how novice or seasoned you are.
Episode 29 - Tim Danchak - Home Gym Buildout Tips
2021/03/26
On Today’s episode we have PPSC Instructor Tim Danchak to discuss the do’s and don’t’s of building out a home gym. In the last year, more people have been judged closer and closer to pulling the trigger on a sweet home setup. As most of us realize, it’s no so easy when you have X budget and want to still have a badass setup.
Episode 27 - Clifton Harski - Trading Joes for Gyms
2021/03/19
On today’s episode, we have the PPSC director of education Clifton Harski. Clifton is not only one of the most educated individuals I have crossed paths with in regards to training but also one of the best personalities. It only seemed appropriate to talk about his background and how he became who he is today.
Episode 26 - Juan Leija - The Architect of Onnit Programming
2021/03/16
On today's podcast we are lucky to have the director of training and programming for Onnit gym in Austin Texas, Juan Leija. Juan has been with Onnit since the beginning from working long hours in the warehouse to finally getting tapped to head up one of the most talked-about gyms in the country. Juan has a diverse background between commercial fitness, private training, and now marrying the big lifts with unconventional training techniques.
Episode 25 - Eric "Primal Swoledier" Leija - From Warehouse to Weightroom
2021/03/12
One of the most recognizable names in fitness, Eric Leija (Primal Swoldier) took the time to sit down with us while we were teaching in Austin Texas for a LIVE Pain-Free Podcast. We dig deep into Eric's childhood, how he got into fitness, and what he does with his time other than savage workouts while shirtless.
