On this episode of the Hardheaded Podcast, Troy talks about picking a word to focus on for the new year, instead of a list of resolutions. Gratitude is the word. Trying to find the things we are grateful. Troy also resolved to cut down on caffeine. Troy has also resolved to work out at a fitness center. This goal reminds Troy and Chet of the time Chet filmed a segment for their old TV show at a CrossFit gym. Chet couldn't walk for days! Calculated Esther: Background, Overview, and Application December 17, 2023   1. Who wrote Esther? We don’t know. Some say Mordecai 2. Is the book of Esther true? Some say it is fiction. Why? It is written like a movie plot. Herodotus: Greek historian. “father of modern history” several corroborating events. 1.     Historian Herodotus describes Xerxes I as being susceptible to women and in the habit of making extravagant offers to them, just as he did to Esther ("up to half my kingdom"). Herodotus mentions that the Persian empire stretched from India to Ethiopia and also refers to the magnificent royal palace in Shushan (Susa), corroboration of what is stated in the Book of Esther. In addition Herodotus mentions an assembly of Persian nobles called by Xerxes to advise him on the proposed war against Greece. Although Herodotus does not give the location of this assembly, the date – "after Egypt was subdued" – corresponds to Xerxes' third year when Esther records an assembly of Persian nobility at a feast. (Histories VII.8)(Histories IX.108) Herodotus relates this occurred in the tenth month of his seventh year as king – the same time Ahasuerus was choosing beautiful women for his harem (Esther 2:16). 2. Annals from the reign of Xerxes 1 mention an otherwise unattested official by the name of “Marduka”, which some have proposed refers to Mordecai, as both are mentioned serving in the kings court.   3. What historical context does the book of Esther find itself? Jews in Babylon under Nebuchadnezzer. Ezra, Nehemiah, Zerubbabel. Some return, some stay. Some say the events of Esther falls between Ezra 6 and 7.   4. Where are we? Iran. Capital of Persian empire. (Babylon was in Iraq. Jews all over middle east. 5. Now it is time to explore the story of Esther. 1. Xerxes or Ahasuerus fueled from India to Egypt. Interestingly, we see that Mordecai tells Esther NOT to inform those around her of her people and heritage: Now when the virgins were gathered together the second time, Mordecai was sitting at the king’s gate. Esther had not made known her kindred or her people, as Mordecai had commanded her, for Esther obeyed Mordecai just as when she was brought up by him. (Esther 2:19-20)   Now, the REASON for this matches what we read in Ezra, that there had been an accusation against the Jews that was written to the king at the beginning of the reign of Ahasuerus, who we call Artaxerxes: And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. (Ezra 4:6) That’s a funny little detail that only makes sense in the context of all that is going on.   12. WHERE IS GOD????? Esther’s story is much like ours. We don’t have angelic messengers. We don’t hear God’s audible voice. The “finger” of God is woven throughout the book of Esther. Events are divine only after we see the full picture and look back. Troy shares what is on his mind, which is dealing with people who want to be included but they refuse to put the work in. Episode 157!  December 7th is the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor Attack. Hebrews 4:12: The Word of God is living and active!  1. The attack on Pearl Harbor taught us that the unthinkable can happen and that we should always be prepared for any possible scenario, even if there is no apparent threat. The U.S. was caught off guard by Japan's surprise attack, which resulted in a devastating loss of lives and shipst. We should learn from this experience and be vigilant and proactive in protecting our interests and values.   2. The attack on Pearl Harbor also showed us the importance of resource utilization intelligence gathering. Some U.S. officials had prior knowledge of Pearl Harbor as e potential target, but failed to act on it or communicate it effectively. Moreover, a Japanese spy was able to infiltrate the local community and gather information for attack. We should learn from this mistake and use our resources wisely and efficie and share relevant information with our allies and partners. • A coded cablegram from the U.S. ambassador to Japan, Joseph C. to the U.S. State Department on January 27, 1941, that reported a Japanese plan to attempt a surprise mass attack on Pearl Harbor! • A "War Warning" message sent from Washington to Army and Navy comm in Hawaii at the end of November, 1941, that indicated an imminent outbr war with Japan.   3. The attack on Pearl Harbor demonstrated the power of unity and resilience. After the attack, the U.S. rallied together to join the war effort and fight against the Axis powerst The attack also inspired many acts of heroism and sacrifice, such as the 15 Medals of Honor   4. The attack on Pearl Harbor also revealed the dangers of infamy and revenge. President Roosevelt called the attack "a date which will live in infamy" and declared war on Japan?. The U.S. response was swift and fierce, but also led to some controversial decisions, such as the internment of Japanese Americans and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki?. We should learn from this history and avoid letting anger and hatred cloud our judgment and morality, and seek peaceful and just solutions to conflicts. Japanese internment camps were established during World War Il by President Franklin D. Roosevelt through his Executive Order 9066. From 1942 to 1945, it was the policy of the U.S. government that people of Japanese descent, including U.S. citizens, would be incarcerated in isolated camps. Enacted in reaction to the Pearl Harbor attacks and the ensuing war, the incarceration of Japanese Americans is considered one of the most atrocious violations of American civil rights in the 20th century.
