The Gut-Brain Connection: Why You Can't Out-Diet Your Nervous System
2026/09/28
The Gut-Brain Connection: Why You Can't Out-Diet Your Nervous System "Trust your gut." "Butterflies in your stomach." "A gut-wrenching decision." We've been saying it for centuries, and we've been right the whole time. You've cut the gluten. You've tracked every bite. You've done the protocol, and done it well. And your gut is still flaring. What if the diet was never the whole story? This week, I'm taking you inside the most underrated wiring in your body: the direct line between your gut and your brain. You'll hear why most of that conversation runs in a direction you'd never guess, how people have calmed their gut symptoms without changing a single thing on their plate, and why a nerve-stimulation technology used in medicine for nearly three decades is now being tested in people whose rheumatoid arthritis stopped responding to medication. And I'll be honest with you about what the research doesn't show, including the one claim about "healing your gut" that you've probably heard a hundred times and that the evidence simply hasn't backed up yet. If you've ever felt like you failed your diet, this is the episode that tells you why you didn't.   In this episode, you'll discover Why your gut does far more "talking" to your brain than your brain does to your gut, and what that means for how you feel The "leaky gut" claim almost everyone repeats, and the piece of evidence that's still missing How a therapy with zero diet changes moved the needle on gut symptoms in controlled trials The nerve-stimulation research in Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis that's rewriting what we know about inflammation (and why you should not go shopping for a stimulator) What skydivers taught researchers about stress and your gut barrier, and the kind of stress that seems to matter far more The one sentence that reframes months of "doing everything right" without results Links mentioned Join the waitlist for Autoimmune Rewired Free Training: Click Here First access to the bigger program growing out of this season. Why Autoimmune Flares Don't Start in the Immune System
2026/09/08
Hands that won't close. Fog you can't think through. And the same frantic question every single time: what did I eat? Here's what no one told you: your flare didn't start this morning. It didn't start yesterday. New wearable research shows your body begins signalling a coming flare-up weeks before you feel a thing. That's weeks you can do something about it So if the flare was already in motion weeks ago, the last thing on your plate was never the story. This week we go find where flares actually begin, why your immune system is quietly taking orders from your nervous system, and the four-step chain (load → nervous system shift → inflammation → symptoms) that's been running long before symptom day. By the end, you'll understand the mechanism behind a flare instead of the myth, and why that turns out to be genuinely good news. In this episode (0:00) The flare that comes "out of nowhere", and why the food-blame spiral gets it wrong (1:45) Recap of Episode 1: healing needs nervous-system capacity (3:40) The myth we have to drop: the immune system isn't acting alone (7:00) The inflammation brake pedal, Kevin Tracey and the vagus nerve (11:15) HRV: reading that brake in real time on your own wrist (14:30) The study that proves the timeline, signals up to 4 weeks early (18:15) Zooming out: what stress research does (and doesn't) say about your disease (22:15) The sequence, assembled: the four steps of a flare (24:15) What this actually changes for you, three takeaways Key takeaways Flares don't start in the immune system. They start upstream, in a nervous system that ran out of capacity, often weeks before you feel anything. Your nervous system holds a brake on inflammation. When the vagus nerve has good tone, it signals your immune cells to settle down. Under sustained stress, that brake loosens. HRV is a live readout of that brake. Lower HRV and a higher resting heart rate track with more active disease. The symptom is the last domino, not the first. By the time you're interrogating yesterday's dinner, you're looking at step four of a four-step chain. This is leverage, not blame. The nervous system is one of the few ingredients of autoimmune disease you can actually reach, and its capacity is trainable.   Links mentioned Join the waitlist for Autoimmune Rewired Free Training: Click Here First access to the bigger program growing out of this season. 🎁 Leave a review — get a free training Before you go, I want to thank you for tuning in and being part of this community. The Real Reason You Keep Flaring (It's Not What You Think)
2026/03/19
Why do autoimmune symptoms flare after stress, poor sleep, illness, or major life events? If autoimmune disease were simply the immune system attacking the body, symptoms would be constant. But for many people, flares follow a pattern. So what's actually driving them? In this episode, Dr. Alison Danby explains a system in the body that most autoimmune patients are never taught about in the doctor's office, and why understanding it may completely change how we think about autoimmune disease. You'll learn: • Why stress is the #1 trigger for autoimmune flares • Why cortisol may not be the real problem • The hidden communication system between the brain and the immune system • Why chronic stress changes immune behavior • The surprising research on stress resilience from Navy SEAL training • Why autoimmune disease might be responding to signals from somewhere else Once you understand how these systems interact, autoimmune disease stops looking random. And that changes everything. Next Episode Why pushing through fatigue may actually make autoimmune disease worse. Ready to go deeper? Why "Pushing Through" Is Keeping You Stuck in Burnout: Building Resilience with Autoimmune
2025/10/08
Building Resilience: The Missing Link in Autoimmune Burnout Recovery Most people think resilience means pushing harder, powering through stress, fatigue, and flare-ups until the body finally gives in. But what if that approach is actually keeping you stuck in burnout? In this episode of Autoimmune Simplified, Dr. Alison Danby redefines what resilience really means in autoimmune healing, and it's not about being tougher or doing more. You'll learn how true resilience is built through flexibility, not force, and why it may be the key to restoring balance after chronic stress or flares. This is Part 3 of our 3-part Autoimmune Burnout Series, wrapping up the conversation on burnout and cortisol with the science (and practice) of building your bounce-back capacity. 🔑 In This Episode, You'll Discover: Why resilience isn't about "staying strong", and what it actually looks like in autoimmune recovery. How burnout affects your body's ability to adapt (and how to retrain it). The subtle mindset shift that signals your nervous system that it's safe to rest. Practical ways to start rebuilding energy, balance, and emotional flexibility, one small step at a time. Resources & Links: Ready to go deeper? Running on Empty: The Autoimmune Burnout Series Part 1 of 3
2025/09/06
Why Autoimmune Burnout Hits Harder, And What to Do About It Burnout isn't just about long hours and too much coffee. When you live with an autoimmune condition, burnout is deeper, more advanced, and more relentless. Think of it as burnout on steroids, an emotional rollercoaster of symptoms, endless appointments, a diagnosis that's both a relief and a life sentence, and fatigue so bone-deep it's invisible to everyone but you. Description: In this first episode of the Running on Empty series, Dr. Alison breaks down why autoimmune burnout is different, and why it leaves you more exhausted, more frustrated, and more misunderstood than "regular" burnout. Here's what you'll discover inside this episode: Why autoimmune burnout is more advanced: from the exhausting path to diagnosis, to the emotional weight of "no cure," to the invisible fatigue no one else seems to understand. The science behind it: how burnout impacts your brain, nervous system, hormones, and inflammation — and why it can amplify flares and symptoms. The truth about testing: why there's no single burnout biomarker, and why cortisol panels won't tell you what you already feel in your body. What doesn't work: quick-fix detoxes, supplement stacks, or trying to "push through." What actually helps: research-backed strategies, from sleep and movement to mindset, gratitude, and nervous system regulation, that rebuild resilience step by step. ✨ Most importantly, you'll walk away knowing this: burnout isn't permanent. With the right strategies, you can recover, rebuild, and reclaim your energy. --------------------------------------------------------------- Resources & Links: Ready to go deeper? 2025/07/04
Episode Summary: You're doing the breathwork. You've tried the supplements. You meditate, journal, and maybe even cold plunge. So why are you still inflamed, flaring, and flat-out exhausted? In this episode, we're flipping the conversation on stress. Not from a mindset or meditation angle, but from a deep biological perspective. We explore what it really means for your body to feel unsafe and how this hidden state of "threat" keeps your immune system stuck in overdrive, even when everything looks good on paper. If you've ever felt like stress is the missing piece, but traditional advice isn't cutting it… this episode is your lightbulb moment. 🔍 In This Episode You'll Learn: Why your body can be in "danger mode" 24/7, even if your life feels calm The difference between perceived stress vs. physiological stress (and why it matters) Why healing doesn't happen unless your body feels safe The limits of breathwork and vagus nerve hacks (and what to focus on instead) The 23-hour stress cycle most people never think about Real client stories showing how nervous system support transforms autoimmune healing 🧠 Key Insight: Your body doesn't heal just because you're calm for 10 minutes. LDN: Hope or Hype for Autoimmune Disease?
2025/03/21
This episode dives deep into one of the questions I get asked most often: Should I take Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)? If you're wondering whether LDN will work for your autoimmune condition, why it's not working for you, or why so many people online swear by it—this is the episode you need to hear. LDN has gained a lot of traction in the autoimmune community, especially on social media and even among some medical professionals. But is the hype supported by science? In this episode, we're cutting through the noise and getting real about what the research actually says. We'll break down: What LDN is and how it works The evidence (and limitations) in conditions like fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's, and scleroderma Why some people feel better—and others don't The difference between symptom relief and disease progression Why we need large, controlled studies before LDN becomes a mainstream autoimmune treatment As a practitioner, it's incredibly important to me that we don't just chase the latest trend. My role is to give you the full picture—the good and the bad—so you can make an informed decision about your health. We're not offering blanket solutions here. We're offering clarity. If you've been curious about LDN, this is the episode that gives you the straight facts—backed by science, explained with heart. 🎧 Tune in now and walk away empowered to make the right choice for your body. ---------------------------------------------------------------- LINKS from the Show:  Join the Autoimmune Academy - Free Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/AutoimmuneAcademyGroup About your host: Dr. Alison Danby is a Naturopathic Doctor trained in Functional Medicine, who has focused on immune function and autoimmune conditions for the last 18 years.
