Heavy rainfall prompts 'imminent' flash flood warning for Wilson, Bexar, Atascosa counties

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning, effective immediately, until 7 p.m. tonight. Flash flooding either is ongoing or expected across parts of Bexar, Wilson, and Atascosa counties. Heavy rainfall from storms that moved into the area through Thursday morning has created conditions that could lead to flash flooding in the area. This includes Floresville, Jourdanton, and Pleasanton, along with San Antonio, Schertz, Converse, Universal City, Live Oak, and Poteet. As of 1:18 p.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area, with between up to 2.5 inches of rain in some places. The expected...

Richard L. Bolf of Pleasanton, Calif., and his sister, Teresa Bolf Dickinson, of St. Louis, Missouri, stop to visit with Wilson County News Publisher Elaine Kolodziej. They were in the area visiting family and friends. Their father was the late Richard Bolf, who is remembered as a longtime Wilson County Clerk. While here, they also checked on the family farm between Poth and Floresville where they have an olive-tree farm.

Peanut Festival and Columbus Day office closures

The approach of the Floresville Peanut Festival and Columbus Day holiday will bring some office and business closures in the area. Peanut Festival In observance of the 82nd annual Floresville Peanut Festival, taking place Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 6-10, certain Floresville city offices and businesses will be closed. Floresville City Hall will be closed Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8-9, as will the Wilson County Tax Office. The Wilson County Appraisal District will remain open. DAR Susanna Dickinson Chapter visits EMS station

On Sept. 8, the La Vernia-based Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Susanna Dickinson Chapter met at the Wilson County Emergency Services District 3 (ESD 3) facility on U.S. 87 in La Vernia. Chapter Regent Lydia Jones presented a certificate of appreciation to District 3 EMS Battalion Chief Levi Scriven for hosting the chapter. New sighting of missing kangaroo, Peanut, renews hope

The search for missing red kangaroo, “Peanut,” got an injection of hope last week, with a sighting of a kangaroo on F.M. 1303 northwest of Floresville. According to Peanut’s owner, Margaret Hosseini- Browder, the manager of Bradley’s Foodmart convenience store on F.M. 1303 near the junction with F.M. 2579 reported seeing a kangaroo near the roadway at around 5 a.m. Wednesday morning, Sept. 23, as she was on her way to work. Technical error causes Texas voter registration backlog

Due to an unknown error with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the agency failed to send voter registration applications to county election officials, according to a statement issued Sept. 24 by the Texas Association of County Election Officials. This comes just weeks before the Nov. 3 general and local elections. Texas county voter registrars across the state recently have received a flood of new voter registrations and updates to voter registration records submitted through the DPS. Someone at the sheriff’s office is on the line. Well, maybe not. The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office has issued an alert to the public, after becoming aware of scam calls currently circulating in the area. Callers claiming to be sheriff’s office personnel are telling residents that they have a warrant or owe a fine for missing jury duty. These scammers may use names of members of the sheriff’s office staff and other information to make themselves sound legitimate.
