Mario Moussa on Business Anthropology and How it Shapes Workplace Culture
2023/11/24
Meet  Mario Moussa, a management consultant turned award-winning author. His latest book, The Culture Puzzle, represents the culmination of over 75 years worth of expertise on an anthropological approach to workplace culture. Mario has taught at the world's leading academic institutions, with work published in the Journal of Business Anthropology.   With over a decade's experience applying anthropology to business contexts, Mario sits down with Brad Jennings,  a People and Change Director at Newton, to tackle the question: What is anthropology, and why should we care about it in the workplace?   In this first episode of our fourth season,  amongst other things, Mario and Brad discuss different organisational culture types. The two take us on a journey as they delve into how culture impacts employee attitudes and performance, asking: How can anthropology help organisations change?   Mario helps us understand how this often overlooked discipline can help us build better, more resilient workplace cultures and reminds us of the crucial importance of listening to our people, since they are the heart and soul of any organisation.   This season was inspired by the findings in our national workplace culture report.  Using the research as a launch pad for  some refreshing conversations with leading experts,  the episodes further unpack the biggest questions that organisations are facing today.  You can read the full report here https://www.newtoneurope.com/workplace-culture  Newton is a recognised specialist in strategic delivery across highly complex environments, brimming with people who have a passion for cracking really knotty problems. Dr. Eliza Filby on the Intergenerational Workforce and Bridging the Age Divide
2023/12/18
Meet Dr. Eliza Filby, academic, author, podcast host and visiting lecturer at King’s College London. As a consultant and Doctor of British History, Eliza is a ‘historian of contemporary values and generational dynamics’ and specialises in ‘Generational Intelligence’. Her well-documented background on the history of generations and ageing has made her a sought after media commentator for BBC News, Sky News, and BBC Radio 4, as well as a keynote speaker. And in 2022 she was awarded the Europa Forum’s 2022 Millennial Leaders Award.    In this episode, she sits down with Darra Singh OBE, Public Sector Strategy Partner at Newton, to discuss the challenges around bridging the gap between the four generations working alongside each other in the workplace today.    Together, they look at how ageing and cultural shifts in the workplace present both points of tension and opportunity for businesses in the twenty-first century. But also how understanding the context, appreciating the value, and learning from the strengths of each generation is key to building a resilient, heterogeneous workforce.    Eliza urges employers to look at older workers as the future of their organisation, as much as they do with millennials and Gen Z. With a later retirement age and employees often choosing to stay in   work for longer, investing in their wellbeing and development is vital. As Eliza notes, companies need to recognize how the life cycle is changing and then create company policies that reflect that modern reality.   This season was inspired by the findings in our national workplace culture report.  Using the research as a launch pad for  some refreshing conversations with leading experts,  the episodes further unpack the biggest questions that organisations are facing today.  You can read the full report here: https://www.newtoneurope.com/workplace-culture Newton is a recognised specialist in strategic delivery across highly complex environments, brimming with people who have a passion for cracking really knotty problems. Geffrye Parsons on A Culture of Care: Inclusion, Adjustments and Allyship
2024/01/24
Meet Geffrye Parsons, Chief Empathy Officer at the Inclusion Imperative. Geffrye is redefining what it means to be a CEO in the twenty-first century, by explaining the  benefits of leading from a place of empathy.    Together, he and Kate Haddon, a People & Change Director at Newton, discuss how creating a culture of care can help you get the best out of your people, boosting performance, productivity, and engagement.    Looking at the role of inclusion, psychological safety, adjustments and allyship, Geffrye and Kate unpack the many layers of a culture of care. Reminding us that it's not just a matter of creating diverse teams, but creating inclusive environments where people have a sense of belonging and feel empowered to share their perspective. Mo Gawdat on Why We Must Raise AI As We Would Our Children
2022/09/21
Mo Gawdat is an entrepreneur and best-selling author, most famously known for his books Solve for Happy and Scary Smart. After an illustrious career of nearly 30 years in tech, which included a stint as Chief Business Officer at GoogleX, Mo turned his focus to the business of happiness, not a business at all but a fundamental feature of human life. His extensive research and dedicated written work led Mo to embark on his most recent journey, One Billion Happy, which is not just the name of his foundation, but his guiding principle and mission.  In this episode, Mo sits down with Justin Geldof, Newton’s Technology Director, to discuss AI in the modern world, pushing us to think about our role in its evolution. Mo argues that instead of thinking of AI as simply technology we should be thinking of it as the newest form of sentient life. Life that we are responsible for raising. In addressing the question of whether AI will develop to have humanity’s best interest in mind, Justin and Mo discuss ethics, our role in nurturing ‘good’ AI, and happiness as a social mission. All of which are more connected to each other than one might think.  Newton is an implementation-focussed consultancy with a difference, brimming with people who have a passion for cracking really knotty problems. They discuss moving beyond the neurodivergent-neurotypical divide, to an understanding that all human minds are different in their own way.   The two discuss neurodiversity in the workplace and how businesses can do better at championing diversity of thought. Amanda and Ed really delve into the different ways of thinking, moving, acting, processing, and communicating that exist all around us. It's a real lesson in respectful curiosity and in how to be more understanding of this human variability so that as leaders, we can be sure everyone’s in an environment where they can succeed.    Newton is an implementation-focussed consultancy with a difference, brimming with people who have a passion for cracking really knotty problems.   Find out more about the way we work at www.newtoneurope.com or join the discussion with #NewtonTalks on LinkedIn.   Newton Talks is a Scenery Studios production produced by Lina Prestwood, Phil Sansom, and Kate McCall. Ari Wallach on How To Longpath So That We Go Far and We Go Together
2022/11/22
In this episode American futurist Ari Wallach introduces Longpath, an applied mindset he uses to cultivate future conscious thinking and behaviour and also the title of his new book, Longpath: Becoming the Great Ancestors Our Future Needs – An Antidote for Short-Termism.   During this conversation, Ari and Julie discuss this period of great change we’re in, what Ari calls the ‘intertidal’, and the opportunity this offers. Ari outlines the three pillars for cultivating a better tomorrow – telos (the ultimate aim), futures thinking, and transgenerational empathy – and urges Julie, and us listeners, to move away from short-termism and to embrace long-term thinking, in and out of the boardroom.    In encouraging us to think 50, 100, even 200 years in the future, Ari delineates what it means to be a great ancestor, one that keeps future generations in mind with every decision that we make. He shows us how going fast means going alone, while going far requires going together.    Newton is an implementation-focussed consultancy with a difference, brimming with people who have a passion for cracking really knotty problems.   Find out more about the way we work at www.newtoneurope.com or join the discussion with #NewtonTalks on LinkedIn.   Newton Talks is a Scenery Studios production produced by Lina Prestwood with additional editing by Jarek Zaba. John Amaechi on adaptable leadership and what being a “team” really means
2023/01/20
Professor John Amaechi OBE is a respected organisational psychologist, an award-winning, international (Sunday and New YorkTimes) best-selling author, a sought-after public speaker, an executive coach and the Founder of APS Intelligence Ltd. After a ground-breaking career in basketball (becoming the first Briton to have a career in the NBA), he has gone on to become one of HR’s most influential thinkers and founded APS Intelligence Ltd., an organisation of thought leaders in inclusive leadership that builds high performing teams. A LinkedIn Top Voice since 2020, Amaechi’s book, the Promises of Giants, has been reviewed by the New York Times’ Adam Grant as “one of the most powerful books ever written about leadership.”   In the first ever LIVE recording of Newton Talks, John sits down with Shyam Radia, one of Newton’s Business Managers, to discuss leadership in the modern world; how we can build a culture where we don’t compare individual successes, whilst pushing us to think about what a ‘team’ really means.    With an audience of over 500 Newton team members, John draws on his sporting and leadership successes, encouraging the audience to push for useful feedback in their roles whilst reminding managers of the difference between ‘useful’ and ‘cruel’ feedback. John argues that the way organisations are run has now evolved and leaders and employees must embrace this shift by being both adaptable to processes and handling this change with an agile and welcoming mind.   Newton is an implementation-focussed consultancy with a difference, brimming with people who have a passion for cracking really knotty problems. As a member of the Black Swan Group, he now works as a trainer and personal coach, instructing businesses on how to apply hostage negotiation practices and principles to their world.   In this episode, Newton’s Katie Quarmby talks with Derek to explore how effective negotiation is less about conversational hardball and in fact requires empathy, listening, and understanding   Together they discuss some of the negotiation tactics that can help you have better, more valuable, conversations as a leader; and how accusations audits and the five stages of listening can foster more candid conversations.
