Our Idols Must Be Annihilated, Not Tolerated
2026/10/25
What happens when we grow impatient with God and decide to take matters into our own hands? Exodus 32 confronts us with one of the most sobering and revealing stories in all of Scripture. The Israelites, fresh out of Egypt and still echoing the sound of God's own voice delivering the Ten Commandments, turn around and craft a golden calf to worship. The speed of their betrayal is staggering, but if we are honest, it mirrors something deeply familiar in our own hearts. This message walks us through four scenes of that ancient drama and draws out a central truth that cuts right to the core of modern life: our idols must be annihilated, not tolerated. We are invited to examine what we have quietly placed at the center of our lives, whether that is comfort, control, approval, power, a relationship, or a substance, and to reckon with the reality that God sees it all and burns with a holy anger born not of cruelty but of love. The story does not leave us without hope. Moses interceding before God foreshadows something far greater, a mediator whose intercession would not be turned away, and whose atoning work would accomplish what no human effort ever could.
God establishes His presence on earth THROUGH the contributions of HIs people
2026/10/18
What does it mean for God to truly dwell among his people? In Exodus 25 and 35, we encounter one of the most remarkable passages in all of Scripture, where God invites ordinary people into his greatest passion: establishing his presence on earth. The tabernacle was not merely a tent in the wilderness. It was a declaration that God was reclaiming what humanity had surrendered in the garden. From the very beginning, we were made for the presence of God, and every restless longing we feel is a reminder that only he can fill the eternity he placed within our hearts. What makes this passage so striking is not just what God was building, but how he chose to build it. He could have spoken a palace into existence. Instead, he invited his people to contribute, both their treasure and their skill. This tells us something profound about the nature of worship. It is not a passive experience. It is an active participation in the work of God. When we give generously and serve skillfully, we are not doing God a favor. We are joining him in something he has been doing since the beginning of time, drawing his people back into his presence.
Priests Stand in the Gap Between God and Man
2026/10/11
What does it actually mean to approach a holy God? That question sits at the heart of Exodus 28 and 29, where we discover that God never leaves us without a way to reach him. The Levitical priesthood was not a bureaucratic institution - it was a gift. God, fully aware of the gap between his perfect holiness and our broken humanity, provided mediators to bridge that distance. The garments of the high priest were not merely ceremonial clothing. Every detail carried weight: the names of the tribes engraved on onyx stones worn on the shoulders, reminding us that God remembers his covenant promises; the twelve precious stones worn over the heart, declaring that every person belonging to God is a treasure he holds close; the golden plate reading 'holy to the Lord,' signifying that even our flawed offerings are made pure through mediation. These symbols point us toward something profound - that God is not distant or indifferent. He designed an entire system so that sinful people could stand in his presence. And here is where it gets personal for us: we live on the other side of that system's fulfillment. Jesus is the great high priest who makes every element of the Levitical priesthood look like a shadow compared to the reality he embodies. He entered not a tent in the wilderness but heaven itself. He offered not the blood of animals but his own. And the curtain that once separated humanity from God's fullest presence was torn from top to bottom the moment he breathed his last. That torn curtain is an open invitation - to all of us, right now.

What does it mean to stand before a holy God as guilty people? That is the question at the heart of Exodus 20, and it is one that cuts right to the core of our faith. As we explore this passage, we find Israel trembling at the base of Mount Sinai, overwhelmed by thunder, lightning, and the very presence of God. Their instinct is to run, to send someone else in their place. And yet, the message they receive is not one of destruction but of salvation. There are two kinds of fear, and learning the difference changes everything. One is the paralyzing dread of a guilty person before a righteous judge. The other is a reverent, awe-filled wonder before a God who has called us into his presence not to condemn us but to save us. This distinction reshapes how we read the laws that follow. The rules God gives in these chapters are not a burden designed to crush us. They are a revelation of his character, a window into what he values, and a framework for how a redeemed people live together. When we understand that, the law stops feeling like a wall and starts feeling like an invitation.
The Thief of Freedom

Jesus Gives True Freedom
2026/08/23
What if the very laws we think we need to follow in order to earn God's love are actually meant to point us toward a freedom we could never achieve on our own? That is the provocative question at the heart of this message, which takes us deep into the story of Exodus and the giving of God's law. We explore how God did not deliver the Israelites from slavery as a reward for their obedience, but rather set them free first and then gave them his commands as a gift. This sequence matters enormously, because it reframes everything we think we know about the relationship between law and grace. The message challenges us to examine how we take something genuinely good, God's commands, and twist them into tools for manipulation, either to bargain with God or to measure ourselves against one another. Drawing on the words of Jesus in Matthew 5, we are confronted with the sobering reality that the law was always about the heart, not just outward behavior. Anger is the root of murder. Lust is the root of adultery. Pride and insecurity are the roots of lying. When we see ourselves clearly in that light, we realize we are all in desperate need of something beyond moral effort. The good news woven through this entire message is that Jesus came not only to die for the life we have lived, but to live the life we could not live, and to offer that perfect record as our own. That is the true freedom being proclaimed here, and it is available to every one of us.

Whose you are defines who you are

Whose you are defines who you are. God rescued Israel from slavery, but at Mount Sinai He invites them into something more: to know Him, belong to Him, and become His treasured possession. The people who had once belonged to Pharaoh would now be called a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Their identity—and the way they lived—would be shaped by the God to whom they belonged. But there was a problem. God is holy, and sinful people cannot simply enter His presence. At Sinai, Israel was called to draw near while still keeping their distance. God’s glory was among them, but they could not yet fully approach Him. In Jesus, we see something greater. The holy God draws near to us, and Christ bears the consequence of our sin so that we can live in God’s presence. Through Jesus, we become what Israel was called to be: a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and God’s own possession. We don't earn this identity through holiness; we are called to live holy lives because we belong to Him. Whose you are defines who you are—and belonging to Jesus changes how we live.
God Frees Us to Form Us Into Healthy Community
2026/07/19
Israel's first battle is won as Aaron and Hur hold up Moses' weary arms. Shortly afterward, Moses' father-in-law Jethro confronts another problem: Moses is trying to carry the burden of leadership alone. For only the second time in the Torah, something is called "not good." Moses needs help. God shows His people that freedom is not meant to be lived in isolation but in community.
God trains us to trust Him
2026/07/12
While they are not at the Promised Land yet, God's people are free. Immediately after their redemption, however, they begin to complain. Through bitter water, lack of food, and lack of water, God teaches Israel an important lesson: He will be their source of provision. He will not provide everything they need at once, but will teach them to depend on Him daily. True freedom is trusting God's provision.
