Comedy Night Podcasted Right is taking a summer hiatus and we are proud to present to you our special summer spin-off: TV Makes Sense. Every other week, Gus, Sam, or Matt will pick a great episode of television and the three will break it down.  The plot, the cast, the behind the scenes info, or even how the episode has affected their real lives.  Because life is messy and unstructured, but TV Makes Sense. Gus got the first pick, and he chose an all-time classic from an amazing series: Arrested Development, Season 3, Episode 2, "For British Eyes Only". You know this episode.  All the Bluths show off their chicken dances, even though none of them have ever actually seen a chicken before.  George ends up on house arrest and is ready to do anything to escape Lucille's libido.  GOB and Tobias team up for a "prostate-tickular", er, a "protest-tacular" called "Free Bird", or, er, "Free Chicken".  Tobias ends up getting "buy-curious" about wigs, and settles for getting 4,000 hair plugs.  After George claims he's really been set-up by the Brits, Michael takes a trip to a curious street in the OC called "Wee Britain", where he meets the lovely Rita, played by Academy Award winning guest star Charlize Theron.  But there's more to Rita than meets the eye; and Michael needs her eyes to check the paperwork to see if George is lying, since it's "For British Eyes Only". TV Makes Sense returns, this time with Sam's first pick: Broad City, Season 4, Episode 4, "Mushrooms".   Abbi and Ilana go on a psilocybin induced adventure, which starts out magical and fun and in animation - animation that in fact won an Emmy. But, a call from Abbi's boss Dara sends the ladies on a mission to drop off some macrons. Abbi finds herself trying to hide the fact that she's high and tripping hard in front of her boss while Ilana finds herself in her dream sexual situation.  You could say sitcom shenanigans ensue, but not sure if your typical sitcom includes sex toys and smushed cats. Matt, Gus, and Sam use this episode of Broad City as a springboard into inappropriate stories of their own: times they've been too intoxicated in front of co-workers or just tripping too hard in general.   Most of our episodes lately have been explicit, but we definitely crank the adult content factor up here.  And not just because Gus starts telling a story and realizing partway through that he's dropped about 6 F-bombs: the Canadians are just a bad influence on him. So, mix up a big bowl of mushrooms and yogurt, sit back, and enjoy the trip!

A look back on October 15, 2009: the first time Community, Parks & Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock all aired new episodes in the same two hour block. I look at Community S1E05 - "Advanced Criminal Law", Parks & Recreation S2E05 - "Sister City", The Office S6E06 - "Mafia", and 30 Rock S4E01 - "Season 4".   I also get lost on some other subjects; like how often kidneys come up, the Balloon Boy Hoax, how many shows involve "the team investigating" the issue of the week, and recap of all the major storylines happening on each series leading up to this night. If you don't listen to this episode; you go to jail; right away!

A look back at October 22, 2009 and the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night. I talk about Community S1E06 - "Football, Feminism and You", Parks & Recreation S2E06 - "Kaboom", The Office S6E07 - "The Lover", and 30 Rock S4E02 - "Into the Crevasse".   Some other tangents include: the most anyone has talked about Windows Vista since the '00s, how the Olympic flame is lit, volunteerism and the "iParticipate" program, and the usage of full body Lycra suits by sports fans.

We are heading back October 29, 2009 and the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night. With Halloween just two days away; I talk about four Halloween specials, I talk about Community S1E07 - "Introduction to Statistics", Parks & Recreation S2E07 - "Greg Pikitis", The Office S6E08 - "Koi Pond", and 30 Rock S4E03 - "Stone Mountain".   There's A LOT of tangents in here.  Thanks in advance for tolerating the extra long run-time. I finally talk about one of 2009's biggest news stories - Michael Jackson's death.  Other less than fun topics include Louis CK's guest appearances on Parks and the new deleted cold open to Koi Pond.  But; there's plenty of fun stuff too; like numerous references to the Dark Knight, some insights into how boring my life was in 2009, and brief reminder of how not-famous Jimmy Fallon was.  Definitely had some complex topics that warranted a little bit extra runtime.  This will not be the norm; and I'll be going back to a short run times going forward TOO LATE TO EDIT NOTE: At around 1:03:45; I foolishly ask if this is the first time Kenneth's hometown has been mentioned on screen.  I - way too late to try to edit out this mistake - have just re-watched "Blind Date", the THIRD episode of the SERIES, and Jack mentions it several times while playing poker against Kenneth.  Forgive me, I'm working hard on being better and will try to avoid such embarrassment in the future.

Onwards we go, into November 5, 2009, and the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night. On the schedule tonight is I talk about Community S1E08 - "Home Economics", Parks and Recreation S2E08 - "Ron and Tammy", The Office S6E09 - "Double Date", and 30 Rock S4E04 - "Audition Day".  After a 90 minute episode last week; I decide to buckle down and tighten up.  I give "What Everyone Watched Instead" a makeover, and since there wasn't anything good in the news: I talk about Bonfire Night, celebrated annually in Britain on November 5th.  That gives me plenty of ammunition to talk about all sorts of stuff.  Meghan Markle comes up a few times for oddly relevant reasons, and so does Cruella De Vil, for an entirely different reason.   I believe I've also found irrefutable proof that Michael Scott knows how to ride a bicycle before Oscar teaches him in Season 7. I also bring up Chekov's Gun several times while I probably don't actually have any idea of what I'm talking about.

I once again fail at coming in at only an hour long episode, but there's just too much to talk about. We catch up to November 12, 2009, and the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night. On the schedule tonight are the following Community S1E09 - "Debate 109", Parks and Recreation S2E09 - "The Camel", The Office S6E10 - "Murder", and 30 Rock S4E05 - "The Problem Solvers".  The uncertain future of NBC looms over this episode, and the impending sale of the network to Comcast.  But, low viewership be damned: these were four great episodes.  The end of 2009 and heading into 2010 was a bizarre time, and we're just starting to get into it.  Some other tangents: Dolly Parton was poorly covered or parodied several times on these series, we learn that Canadian politeness and the accent go hand in hand, and I appreciate these shows the same way that Tom Haverford treats abstract art. The run-times are getting leaner and meaner.  Not that much meaner.  I'm still making fun of Jay Leno; but tonight, Oprah Winfrey gets some criticism too. Going back to November 19, 2009, tonight's schedule includes: Community S1E10 - "Environmental Science", Parks and Recreation S2E10 - "Hunting Trip", The Office S6E11 - "Shareholder Meeting", and 30 Rock S4E06 - "Sun Tea".  It's NBC's Green Week, so they're forcing the shows to shoehorn in environmental conscious themes.  Being told by a massive corporation to be eco-friendly is handled with the irreverence you should expect.  And, in breaking news, Oprah Winfrey has announced that she will be ending her daytime talk show at the end of its 25th season.  I'll handle that news with the irreverence you should expect. Buy a brownie online, take some general anesthetic, hop in a complimentary limo, and leave your hunting license at home!

I'm skipping past Thanksgiving since nothing new was on TV, bringing us one week closer to the end of 2009. Going back to December 3, 2009, on the air tonight was: Community S01E11 - "The Politics of Human Sexuality", Parks and Recreation S02E11 - "Tom's Divorce", The Office S06E12 - "Scott's Tots", and 30 Rock S04E07 - "Dealbreakers Talk Show #0001". It's been the night I've wanted to talk about for weeks as the show has finally caught up to the beginning of the Tiger Woods' sex scandal.  What a fun coincidence that tonight's episodes deal with dating escorts, getting divorced, disappointing children, and setting impossible to reach life goals. We have arrived at the end of 2009, and we've got four delightful Christmas specials to look back upon today! Original airing on December 10, 2009, I'm discussing Community S01E12, "Comparative Religion"; Parks and Recreation S02E12, "Christmas Scandal"; The Office S06E13, "Secret Santa"; and 30 Rock S04E08, "Secret Santa". Not only do two episodes have the same title; but there's tons of other coincidences and links between these shows and everything else airing on Thursday that it must be some sort of Christmas miracle.  Some other tangents I explore are: the opening of the highest grossing movie of all time, "Avatar", and what few things I remember about it; getting a quota of at least one Canadian character per night; a brand new record for the amount of quotes I use from a single episode; another record in how many times we see one director in one night; and a very tenuous link to Festivus. Happy Holidays; everyone, even if it's only the middle of June! 

It's a new year, and we officially begin our new format.  Matt, Gus, and Sam go deep on discussing a night full of NBC Comedy Night Done Right goodness. Even though there was no new Office, there were plenty of great guest stars to make this a great night of television. While we may go off on some tangents about wanting to either join the Tune Squad or become pet detectives, disagreeing on How I Met Your Mother's ending, likening the drama on Jersey Shore to other notable events, and remembering celebrities who have passed away this year: we go deep on these four episodes and have a great time doing it. In the Olds, we begin a two-parter on Liz Lemon's ex-boyfriend, Conan O'Brien, to try and learn why he quit his childhood dream job of hosting the Tonight Show.  We also learn that people love sharing terrible news on late night talk shows. Recorded in the depths of winter, today's episode is full Winter Madness on display.  Gus, Sam, and Matt go back to January 21, 2010 to discuss the new episodes of Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock that aired that night.   Matt concludes the tale of Conan O'Brien quitting NBC by releasing his two weeks' notice just as a major natural disaster occurred, and some lessons learned are: Kanye was somehow involved, Conan should just buy a DVR, and it's okay to give up on all your hopes and dreams for 45 million dollars.  Hopefully, we never have to discuss the Jay Leno Show again. We break down the new episodes while falling into some serious IMDb traps, express hard feelings about the Wordle craze, praise Lin-Manuel Miranada's work, reminisce about the short-lived CBS sitcom "$h*! My Dad Says", and discuss the unfortunate consequence of sharing your name with well-known white supremacist.   Gus can't wait for Mark to just Brandanaquit, Sam needs a ranked list of Greendale's hottest students and faculty members, and Matt thinks he's figured out how Michael came up with the idea for Scott's Tots. All that, plus some microphone issues and barking dogs, in another Comedy Night Podcasted Right which puts Avatar's runtime to shame.
