Humility as Neediness
2026/10/13
The most common warning against social media usage is comparison: the conscious and unconscious evaluation of our lives against others. We become discontent when we think someone is doing better. We take comfort when we think we’re better off than someone else. How often we comfort ourselves comparatively, our ego insisting we are better than ‘them’ (whoever ‘them’ might be). But the way of the saints is clear-eyed honesty. Nakedness before God about our brokenness, our sin, and our need for grace. And in this humble surrender we discover God’s abundant grace.
Humility as Childlike
2026/10/06
The modern person strives, works, and builds their life toward independence-the freedom from the support, limitations, and reliance on others. But this ego-driven independence drives us further from the life we long for and the love God offers. God invites us, like children, to embrace his love for us. That in childlike humility we might discover how loved we are.
Everyday Saints
2026/09/29
Christian cynicism can cause us to lose sight of the quiet faithfulness happening all around us and lower our expectations for what God can do through ordinary people. As we surrender ourselves to God’s transforming work and commit to becoming more like Jesus together, we can become a community of everyday saints who join God in the healing of our world, one life at a time.
Revealing the Kingdom
2026/09/22
When we lose sight of why we are the church, we can become distracted by everything beyond our calling to follow Jesus. As we become a community of everyday saints and commit ourselves to one another and our city, we reveal the kingdom of Jesus together, in Kansas City.
God Is For The City
2026/09/15
The story of the early church in Antioch reveals how pluralism can sharpen our faith, diversity can teach us self-denial, proximity to need can cultivate compassion, and pressure can deepen our devotion. Rather than seeing the city as an obstacle to the gospel, we are called to stay planted, love our neighbors, and pray boldly, trusting that God can make difficult places holy ground.
The Way We Worship
2026/09/01
As we journey toward the kingdom of God, James reminds us that worship is more than what happens on a Sunday morning. Through singing, healing, confession, and prayer, the church becomes a community that participates in the mystery and power of God together.
How We Wait
2026/08/25
In a world marked by suffering and injustice, James invites us to practice patient hope by trusting that Christ will ultimately make all things new. As we learn to wait faithfully, bring our suffering to Christ, and stand alongside others in their pain, we become people who live with steadfast hope and trust in God’s redemption.
Wealth, Injustice, and Coming Judgment
2026/08/18
In a world where wealth can easily become a source of security and self-interest, James calls us to examine our relationship with money. As we loosen our grip on what we have, pursue justice, and practice generosity, we become people who reflect the generous heart of God.
What We Have Left Undone
2026/08/10
Amid the uncertainty of a fleeting life, James invites us to loosen our grip on the future and practice dependence on God in the present. As we learn to live with humility, embrace the opportunities God places before us, and practice interruptibility, we become people who notice, love, and respond to those around us today.
Choosing Humility
2026/08/04
Beneath every conflict lies a deeper question of desire and allegiance. James calls us to resist the pull of pride and worldly wisdom, drawing near to God in humility so that His grace can transform both our hearts and our relationships.
Above the Noise
2026/07/28
Amid the noise of a reactive world, James invites us to practice discernment by examining the wisdom shaping our lives. As we grow in self-awareness and embrace the wisdom from above, we become people who sow peace and bear the fruit of justice.
Taming the Tongue
2026/07/21
In a world where words are often used as weapons, James offers a compelling vision of Kingdom speech. Our words reveal our hearts, shape our witness, and carry the power of life and death, inviting us to become people whose speech consistently reflects the character of Christ.
Complete Faith
2026/07/14
In a world increasingly divided by borders, status, and ideology, James reminds us that faith was never meant to remain abstract. Mature faith is revealed through love in action, crossing barriers to embody the Kingdom of God and reflect the way of Jesus.
Sin of Partiality
2026/06/30
In a world that constantly measures people by power, wealth, and influence, James calls followers of Jesus to a radically different way of living. The Kingdom of God is not built on favoritism or status, but on the royal law: love your neighbor as yourself.
Public Witness
2026/06/23
Poor public witness can make faith seem hollow, but James points us back to the heart of true religion. Through wise speech, moral discernment, and compassionate action, followers of Jesus are called to reflect God's character in everyday life. The result is a faith that is both authentic and transformative.
