Season 2 | Episode 25 | June 22, 2022 Ada D. Stewart, MD, FAAFP, is the board chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the guest on Medical Matters Weekly on June 22, 2022. Since 2012, Dr. Stewart has served as a family physician with Cooperative Health in Columbia, South Carolina, as lead provider and HIV specialist. From 2003 to 2012, Stewart served as chief medical officer and HIV specialist at the Richland Community Health Care Association in Eastover and Columbia, South Carolina. In the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, Stewart enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves, where she continues to serve and has achieved the rank of Colonel. In addition to her national role with AAFP, Stewart has served in many state and local leadership positions, including for the South Carolina Academy of Family Physicians. Among many honors, she was named to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS in 2019 and still serves on that council. Stewart earned her bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio, and her medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio. She completed her family medicine residency training at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. Stewart has also earned additional certification in HIV care from the American Academy of HIV Medicine and is certified as a hospice medical director by the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board. Season 2 | Episode 24 | June 15, 2022 Matthew Vernon, MD—a radiation oncologist, medical director of the Southwestern Vermont Regional Cancer Center, and an avid road and adventure racer—will be the guest on Medical Matters Weekly on Wednesday, June 15. Dr. Vernon has been instrumental in procuring advanced technology for cancer treatment in southern Vermont, including a linear accelerator. The device delivers treatment with greater accuracy and fewer side effects. Similarly, he helped introduce hippocampal sparing radiation, which helps patients with metastatic brain tumors retain thinking and short-term memory function typically lost with full-brain radiation. A third innovation, tumor-treating fields, slows the growth of primary brain cancer in ways that can extend life and improve quality of life for patients. Dr. Vernon received his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his residency in the Department of Therapeutic Radiology at the University of Minnesota. She focuses on the interplay between organizational norms, provider-patient communication, and implicit cognition, and how these phenomena produce racial disparities in end-of-life treatment. As the vice president of DEIB, Malcolm will develop and lead an interdisciplinary and cross-departmental office and will be responsible for integrating DEIB values into all aspects of Dartmouth Health’s culture, goals, metrics, and strategic operating plan. While serving as a chief medical officer at Banner Health in Phoenix, Arizona, from 2016 to 2019, Malcolm provided clinical leadership to a tertiary care center offering inpatient, emergent, and same-day services provided by more than 1,000 specialty physicians, more than 300 advanced care providers and 1,500 associates to meet the needs of a growing community. While in this role, Malcolm directly participated in organizational planning and decision making and was the sole physician member of Banner Health’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council. During her involvement on the council, diversity increased significantly at all levels, and team member resource groups provided support to veterans, women in leadership, and multicultural and LGBTQ+ communities. But, there’s actually a whole field exploring how these two concepts overlap. It’s called Medical Anthropology. Smith-Morris is a medical anthropologist and professor at Southern Methodist University. Her research documents experiences of chronic disease, particularly diabetes, among Indigenous, migrant, and marginalized communities. Her books include two monographs: Diabetes Among the Pima: Stories of Survival with University of Arizona Press and Indigenous Communalism with Rutgers University Press. She has published two edited volumes: Chronic Conditions, Fluid States, with Lenore Manderson and Rutgers University Press, and Diagnostic Controversy from Routledge Press. She is also a contributing writer with Cultural Survival in support of Indigenous rights. Smith-Morris received her bachelor’s in anthropology from Emory University, a master’s in rehabilitation services from Florida State University, and her master’s and PhD in anthropology from the University of Arizona. She is the current president of the Society for Medical Anthropology. Season 2 | Episode 14 | April 6, 2022 As a retired nurse practitioner, current state representative for Windham-3, and member of the health committee, Leslie Goldman has a unique perspective on health care. She was a family nurse practitioner and started a primary care medical practice with her husband Dr. Matthew Peake. In 2008, she completed a master’s of Public Health at the Dartmouth Medical School with a focus on systems thinking and quality improvement and went on to practice primary care at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Keene, where she gained an understanding of large, complex organizations. She retired from medicine after 37 years. Goldman served on the Bellows Falls Union High School Board for 12 years, on the Rockingham Select Board for 3 years, and as a board member of Parks Place Community Resource Center. In March 2020, she helped found the Rockingham Help and Helpers (RHH). In addition, she is a founding member of The Compass School and currently serves on the board of The Nature Museum in Grafton. Most notably, Goldman serves Athens, Brookline, Grafton, Rockingham, part of North Westminster, and Windham as the Windham-3 representative, and sits on the House Committee on Health Care. She aims to use her understanding of medicine, education, public health, and local government to improve the lives of all in the community. She enjoys singing with the Hallowell Hospice Choir and The River Singers. She and her husband have two grown sons.
