Tony DeFalco joins us to share his experience as a seasoned nonprofit professional with over three decades of experience in fundraising. Tony DeFalco Bio: Tony DeFalco joined Latino Network as the Executive Director in February 2021, where he and his team work to positively transform the lives of Latinx youth and families in education, leadership, and civic engagement in Oregon. He brings decades of experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, advocacy, and coalition-building across diverse regional and state sectors, coupled with a deep understanding of the issues facing Latinx and communities of color. His past experiences include working with Native American tribes nationwide to re-acquire culturally significant lands and working with a broad coalition of environmental groups, commercial and recreational fishing groups, and scientists to protect ocean health. Prior to his role at Latino Network, DeFalco worked for Verde for ten years, partnering with the community to innovate anti-displacement, environmental protection, and economic development efforts. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Ethnic Studies with a minor in Chicano Studies and a master’s in Natural Resources Planning from Humboldt State University. Tony currently serves as the board chair of the Coalition of Communities of Color and was appointed by Governor Brown to the Urban Flood Safety & Water Quality District in 2019. Linda Whitlow joins us to share her experience  as a two-time breast cancer survivor, which motivated her to start the organization Cancer Survivor Resources. Linda shares her inspiring journey and the driving force behind her nonprofit work, aiming to assist women facing financial struggles during cancer treatment. Linda sheds light on her organization's mission, providing timely assistance to women in active treatment by bridging the financial gap in their everyday needs. She explains the best ways in which donors are helping her launch her new endeavor, and offers advice on the best ways a donor can show up for the efforts of small start-up nonprofits like hers. In 2001, Linda faced the initial challenge of Stage 0 breast cancer, undergoing a lumpectomy followed by eight weeks of daily radiation. Little did she know that a decade later, she would confront Stage 3 cancer in the same breast, leading to a mastectomy and a unique reconstructive process utilizing stomach muscles. Motivated by her personal experiences, Linda founded Cancer Survivor Resources with a dual mission. Firstly, she aspires to empower survivors with the knowledge and resources needed to address the questions that arise during and after cancer treatment. Secondly, recognizing the financial strains that often accompany a cancer diagnosis, Linda is dedicated to connecting survivors with agencies that can assist with essential needs such as utilities, food, and childcare. Vu Le joins us to share his wisdom about the best and worst in philanthropy. He is the former executive director of RVC, a nonprofit in Seattle that promotes social justice by supporting leaders of color, strengthening organizations led by communities of color, and fostering collaboration between diverse communities. Vu is a founding board member of Community-Centric Fundraising, a movement that aims to ground fundraising practices in racial equity and social justice. Vu was born in Vietnam. He and his family came to the US when Vu was eight. He spent several years in Seattle, attending elementary and middle school, before moving to Memphis, Tennessee for high school and St. Louis for college and graduate school. He has a BA in Psychology and a Masters in Social work. He is a vegan, a father of two kids (ages ten and seven), and a staunch defender of the Oxford Comma. Sybil and Fred are back for Season 3 and joined by their good friend David Secord to discuss the best and worst of philanthropy. They share their personal stories and lessons learned from decades working in the philanthropic world. Episode Highlights: Personal lessons learned working in philanthropy. Examples of donor behavior to emulate or avoid. Fred Ackerman-Munson Bio: Fred has spent the last 20 years as Executive Director of the 444S Foundation in Bellevue, WA. During that time the Foundation has granted over $50 million to organizations working to protect wildlands and wildlife in Western North America.  For 7 years prior to that Fred was Deputy Director of Conservation Northwest where he led The Cascades Conservation Partnership and Loomis Forest Campaigns that together raised over $100 million dollars to purchase and protect over 70,000 acres of forest in Washington’s Cascades Mountains.  During that same time Fred also consulted on campaign design, grantmaking and evaluation for numerous foundations including Pew, Oak, Brainerd and Ploughshares. For 12 years before that, Fred was Regional Campaign Director for Greenpeace, where he researched, developed, and implemented numerous successful campaigns on solid and toxic waste, energy, and fisheries issues. Fred has 4 kids in college and lives with the love of his life on a small horse farm in Damascus, Oregon. David Secord Bio: After 20 years in foundation and university leadership jobs, David established Barnacle Strategies as an independent consulting and volunteering platform. From a home base on an island in BC, David works with partners in Canada, the United States, and sometimes farther afield.  David enjoys variety, so at a given time, consulting clients might include foundations and funder affinity groups, partnership-oriented academic and research institutions, Indigenous people's organizations, and big or small NGOs. Projects and advising tend toward the creative and relevant, often integrating environmental, socioeconomic, and biocultural strategies - especially place-based ones.  David also helps organizations recruit outstanding talent by managing executive searches and keeping fresh by serving on several volunteer boards.
