Remember, a few years ago, before 2015 and the conservative Turkish government, Istanbul Pride used to be the biggest in Europe, gathering thousands of LGBTIQ+ people in the streets, to protest  peacefully for their rights.  Remember last year, for our podcast episode on the 2021 Istanbul Pride, we met Meriç, a Turkish activist and member of the Istanbul Pride Committee.  Today, one year later, Pride parades are still banned by the government. But even if Turkey withdrew from the Istanbul Convention and even if the police is more and more active during protests, LGBTIQ+ activists continue fighting for their recognition and their right to live as equally as any other Turkish citizen.  For this new episode dedicated to Pride month, we met two LGBTIQ+ student activists from Bogaziçi University, one of Istanbul’s leading universities. En Algérie, des journalistes et citoyens ordinaires risquent de lourdes sanctions pénales pour avoir exprimé leurs opinions publiquement, que cela soit sur les réseaux sociaux ou dans les journaux. Pourtant, les articles 52 et 54 de la Constitution algérienne garantissent la liberté d’expression et la liberté de la presse.  Pour ce 3 mai 2022, Journée mondiale de la liberté de la presse, nous donnons la parole a Nadia SALEM, journaliste et membre active du collectif FreeAlgeria.

En ce 8 mars 2022, nous consacrons ce nouvel épisode aux droits des femmes dans la région euro-méditerranéenne. Pour de nombreuses activistes de la région, l'accès à un emploi stable et correctement rémunéré est un signe certain d’émancipation et d'autonomie, dans des pays où les inégalités de genre sont loin d’être abolies.  En Tunisie, au Maroc, en Algérie, des inégalités criantes entre hommes et femmes sont dénoncées quotidiennement dans le monde du travail, et notamment le travail agricole, secteur qui sera l’objet de cet épisode.  Remerciements : Naila Zoghlami (présidente de l'AFTD), Bouchra Chetouani (activiste marocaine) et Ismahane (militante à Tharwa Fatma N'Soumeur). Dans un contexte socio-politique tendu, la situation des personnes migrantes et réfugiées en Tunisie s’aggrave de jour en jour. Le nombre de migrants, demandeurs d’asile et réfugiés en Tunisie n’a fait qu'augmenter depuis 2019. En novembre 2021 par exemple, plus de 9 200 demandeurs d’asiles étaient enregistrés auprès du Haut Commissariat des Nations unies pour les Réfugiés. Mais l’Etat s’est montré incapable de gérer cette situation. Les centres de réception au Sud du pays sont saturés, tandis que  3000 personnes attendent toujours d’être enregistrées.  Cette augmentation des arrivées est intimement liée à la situation dans son pays voisin, la Libye. Les migrantes et migrants interceptés par les gardes cotes libyens sont enfermés illégalement dans les centres de détention en Libye et subissent des abus et violences contraires aux droits fondamentaux. En 2021, plus de 32 000 migrants ont été interceptés puis refoulés vers la Libye. Face à cela, beaucoup tentent malgré tout de reprendre la route pour rejoindre la Tunisie, et tenter ensuite la traversée de l’Europe Nous avons rencontré des représentants des communautés de migrants sub-sahariens à Sfax.  ---- Musique: Rivers Run Red - Christoffer Moe Ditlevsen

While Lebanon is going through a historical economic collapse, where an economic and political elite has failed to govern the country, the Pandora Papers exposed yet another aspect of the financial crisis.  In October 2021, millions of leaked documents revealed the secret offshore accounts of world leaders, billionaires and celebrities, including from Arab States, enabling these latter to avoid paying tax in their country.  While in most countries, it’s not illegal to have assets offshore, the economic implications are catastrophic for the countries missing out on tax revenues. And for governments with an already limited public investment, like in the Arab States, the lost revenue is missing sorely.  Analysts from the Arab NGO Network for Development are following the issue of taxation in Arab countries. Among them, Naser Abdelkarim Mufrej, a PhD in Financial economics from Palestine. As well, Nizar Hassan, a Lebanese researcher and content creator, takes part in the progressive political organisation LiHaqqi and tries to organise for a more just governance of Lebanon.

In Libya, migrants, asylum seekers and refugees are confronted to inhumane living conditions. This dire situation has worsened in recent months due to an escalation of violence.  During the last months, Libyan security authorities have carried out raids against thousands of migrants in the town of Gargaresh, in Tripoli. After those raids, at least 5,000 people were detained, including many women and children. More than 10 migrants were killed.   We met a Libyan activist working for a Libyan human rights organization, which advocates for the rights of migrants and refugees in Libya and monitors the situation in detention centres. Gender equality is increasingly challenged in Europe and beyond. Several governments, in line with their illiberal and autocratic political lines,  adopt conservative laws, and attack women’s and LGBTIQ people’s rights.  In less than a year, we witnessed Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul convention, an Egyptian draft law depriving women of their legal status to conclude a marriage contract or claim guardianship of their children, as well as a repeated opposition to equality in inheritance by the new Tunisian president. At the same time, the region is facing huge economic and political instabilities, leading to further backlashes against women and LGBTIQ people.    But some activists choose to stand up against these trends. Ayouba is a queer activist from Morocco. In their association Nassawiyat , they denounce a recent backlash campaign led in Morocco against LGBTIQ people early 2021. Ils sont des milliers, depuis plusieurs semaines, à fuir le régime taliban, et la privation des libertés qui a suivis. Les Afghanes et afghans prennent la route vers l’Europe ; une route dangereuse et meurtrière.   Certain.e.s réfugié.e.s sont bloqué.e.s aux frontières d'états voisins comme la Turquie, l’Iran ou le Pakistan. D'autres sont bloqué.e.s après, sur la route des Balkans, victimes de violences et refoulements. Enfin, celles et ceux qui arrivent à destination se retrouvent sans-papiers, dans l’attente d’acceptation de leurs demandes d’asiles.  Parmi ces derniers, Abdul-Azim Azad. Arrivé à Bruxelles en 2012, Abdul a été contraint de quitter son travail et son pays, menacé par les talibans. For the last episode of EuroMed Standing Watch Season 1, we go to a country where women’s and LGBTI+ people’s rights are at stake. On the first of July, Turkey is going to withdraw from the Istanbul Convention, a treaty which legally protects women from violence, and prosecutes the perpetrators.  This decision represents a step backward for LGBTI+ people rights. The current Turkish government promotes a conservative and anti-gender agenda. LGBTI+ communities have become the target of state harassment, undergoing daily discriminations in all spheres of life.  Pride Marches are banned since 2015. But giving up is not an option for LGBTI+ activists. Despite numerous clashes and arrests, a Pride will once again take place this year, online, from 21 to 27 of June.   Meriç G. Doğan is an activist and member of the Istanbul Pride organization committee. For him, having a pride and being visible in public spaces is a strong political act.

Pour ce nouvel épisode, et à l’occasion de la Fête du travail, nous avons tourné notre regard vers la Tunisie.  Le travail décent pour toutes et tous est l'un des défis actuels du pays, surtout dans les secteurs de l'agriculture, de l'informel et parfois même du secteur privé. L’inégalité salariale et les discriminations de genre au travail sont aussi monnaie courante.  Pour garantir une égalité de travail pour toutes et tous, l’UGTT (Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail) se mobilise au niveau législatif, pour faire bouger les lignes et améliorer concrètement ces droits.  Dans ce nouvel épisode d’EuroMed Standing Watch, nous rencontrons Souad Khallouli, militante syndicale, formatrice et chargée de projet sur l’économie sociale et solidaire au département des relations internationales de l’UGTT. 65 ans après l’Indépendance de la Tunisie et avec la conjoncture actuelle liée à la crise sanitaire mondiale, Souad Khallouli ne voit toujours pas de garantie des droits économiques des travailleuses et travailleurs tunisiens.

Welcome to this new episode of EuroMed Standing Watch, the podcast series by EuroMed Rights. Each month, we give the floor to activists and human rights advocates around the Euro-Mediterranean region. They share their daily experiences and challenges.  Today, we are going straight to Gaza in Palestine, to talk about the Great March of Return. This series of demonstrations were organised between 30 March 2018 and December 2019. They aimed at demanding an end to the Israeli blockade, and the right of return, for Palestinian refugees.  But while these demonstrations were largely peaceful, the Israeli army used tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition against the protesters. Hundreds of people were killed, and thousands injured, including journalists, and medics. As on the 28 March we celebrated the third year of the Marches, we decided to meet Nuriya Oswald. She is the International Legal & Advocacy Director of Al Mezan Center for Human Rights studies. In this episode, Nuriya highlights the need to hold accountable those who committed these crimes. And she begins by recalling the basics of the Great March of Return.
