Navigating a Toxic Workplace: The Myths and Realities of Turning Around an Unhealthy Culture
2026/01/27
In this episode, Dr. Laura talks to Catherine Mattice about navigating toxic workplaces, the topic of Dr. Laura’s new book. Catherine is a workplace culture expert, culture strategist, and author, having just released her own book called Navigating a Toxic Workplace for Dummies. She runs the organization Civility Partners that focuses on creating respectful workplace cultures across all sizes of companies. Dr. Laura and Catherine discuss organizational risk factors that lead to toxic workplaces, and examine the steps necessary to turn such toxicity around. Catherine shares her journey of observing workplace bullying and experiencing it firsthand. She wrote a paper on toxic behavior in graduate school, which led her to focus on researching toxicity and bullying in workplaces as a career. Dr. Laura and Catherine note that the pandemic has shifted workplace culture, as everyone is now discussing employee experience and engagement, and toxic behaviors are being considered and exposed. They examine what bullying behavior looks like, HR’s role in assisting employees, and how to rebuild unhealthy workplace cultures. This episode exposes the dark side of workplaces and how to improve the culture, something Catherine’s company focuses on doing one company at a time.  “... I want everybody who's maybe considering leaving to understand that quitting is a power move. It does not mean you've lost the battle. It means you've chosen yourself over the employer and that you're taking control back. And so if you need to leave, then leave. Nobody faults you for it.” - Catherine Mattice About Catherine Mattice: Catherine founded Civility Partners in 2008. After working in a toxic environment herself she decided this was a problem she could solve, and today is a leading expert on the topic of turning around a toxic workplace culture and building a positive one in its place. Under Catherine’s leadership, the Civility Partners team has worked with over 250 clients, including Chevron, NASA, Stanford University, Embraer, and the American Red Cross to help their leaders and teams cultivate a respectful and civil work environment. Catherine is an award-winning author, speaker, blogger, and business owner; has been cited in such news outlets as Forbes, INC Magazine, Entrepreneur, and USA Today; and has appeared as a guest expert on such venues as NPR and CNN. She also has over 60+ courses on LinkedIn Learning and reaching global audiences. As a keynote speaker, Catherine is widely regarded by audiences around the world as she shares her disruptive and humorous take – and totally actionable steps – on building a positive and civil company culture. Her insights and consulting programs have transformed CEO’s of multi-national companies, leaders of all levels in the US Marines and US Navy, and professionals in companies of all shapes and sizes. I Wish I’d Quit Sooner: Launching My Book Into the World
2026/01/13
In this episode, Dr. Laura officially releases her new book, “I Wish I’d Quit Sooner: Practical Strategies for Navigating and Escaping a Toxic Boss”. She introduces us to what the book is about, why she wrote it, and her hopes for the book’s impact on people’s lives. Dr. Laura has run Canada Career Counseling for 16 years, and through the work of helping clients achieve career goals, she learned how many were suffering under a toxic boss. The numbers increased post-pandemic, with toxic workplace cultures becoming an uncomfortable rising trend. This is what inspired her to dig into research on toxic bosses and write her book. One thing Dr. Laura notes is that she specifically calls the toxic management “toxic bosses” instead of “toxic leaders” because leaders are people who motivate, inspire, and help people grow. Toxic bosses do the opposite: they overtly or covertly harm people. Dr. Laura breaks down the accessible structure of “I Wish I’d Quit Sooner” and how she categorizes the eight personas of a toxic boss. Her goal is to spread the word about the emotional and physical pain toxic bosses cause, and to offer not only ways to identify them but ways to escape their clutches. By educating people on the damage being done by toxic bosses, she hopes to help organizations eradicate the issue by teaching them how to cultivate inspiring leaders instead. “We see a lot of parallels between toxic bosses and toxic partners in a romantic relationship. Starts off good, goes bad, gets worse. Our self-esteem is challenged, our self-confidence goes down, and they suck our energy. And then it's hard to get out. You feel trapped, oftentimes financially, by a toxic boss.” - Dr. Laura About Dr. Laura: Dr. Laura Hambley Lovett is a work and career psychologist and thought leader on the evolution of work. She has always been fascinated by how work intersects with life and loves to use her expertise to improve organizations and help people thrive. Her passion for taking creative ideas and launching them into successful business strategies led her to start three counselling psychology practices (Calgary Career Counselling, Canada Career Counselling, and Synthesis Psychology), as well as six different business brands offering organizational assessment and consulting services. Dr. Laura is honoured to have been selected as a Woman of Distinction in Canada in 2014 and received a Canadian Woman of Inspiration Award as a Global Influencer in 2018. Elevating Your Influence to Thrive in Your Career
2025/12/30
Dr. Laura welcomes international keynote speaker, CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame inductee, and one of the world’s leading experts on executive presence and influence, Stacey Hanke, to the show to talk about how we can tend to and elevate our influence at work. Stacey defines the qualities of true influence and discusses her Monday to Monday philosophy of consistency in messaging. Not only is influence grown in what we say, but how we listen, how we show up daily, and how we continue to present ourselves.  Stacey’s new book, Influence Elevated, describes how consistent quality communication is key to maintaining influence. Monday to Monday, to her, means that our influence does not take weekends off. We must present ourselves authentically and consistently in every interaction. Stacey and Dr. Laura explore the importance of body language, active and mindful listening, everybody’s individual influence type, and the necessity of being future-focused. Stacey’s insight reveals how leaders, executives, and professionals at every career stage can strengthen their executive presence and elevate the way they show up both in person and virtually.  “There's tons of confusion about what influence is and how to achieve it. We define it, my team and I, as your body language and your messaging. They need to be consistent Monday to Monday. That way no one ever has to guess who's going to show up. And we all know that true consistency is doing what you say you're doing when no one's watching.” - Stacey Hanke About Stacey Hanke: Stacey Hanke is an international keynote speaker, CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame inductee, and one of the world’s leading experts on executive presence, influence, and leadership communication. For more than two decades, she has worked with leaders at nearly 100 Fortune 500 companies — including Microsoft, Google, American Express, Coca-Cola, Boeing, and FedEx — equipping them with the skills to command a room, earn trust, and be consistently perceived as the respected, influential leaders they intend to be. Stacey’s transformative, humor-filled presentations teach audiences to overcome modern communication hurdles with proven strategies that capture attention, authentically connect, and inspire people to take action. From high-stakes presentations to casual conversations, prepare to elevate your communication skills and executive presence, Monday to Monday®.  Resources: Website: StaceyHankeInc.com LinkedIn Instagram YouTube “Influence Elevated: Maximizing Your Connection” by Stacey Hanke Learn more about Dr. Laura on her website: https://drlaura.live “I Wish I’d Quit Sooner:  Pre-orders: Practical Strategies for Navigating and Escaping a Toxic Boss” by Dr. Laura Hambley Lovett - Pre-orders and Amazon For more resources, look into Dr. Laura’s organizations:  Canada Career Counselling Synthesis Psychology Pre-order Dr. Laura’s new book today: I Wish I’d Quit Sooner: Practical Strategies for Navigating a Toxic Boss Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The Power of Thanks to Transform Work Lives and Culture
2025/12/16
Dr. Laura welcomes Navin ‘nuvs’ Jain, Product Evangelist at Workhuman, to the show to talk about gratitude and recognition. Workhuman focuses on workplace cultures that foster recognition, and Nuvs is deeply committed to spreading the word on the power of thanks and elevating great work happening in organizations. He and Dr. Laura discuss why gratitude can disappear from workplaces and how it can be brought back.  There is a tendency at work to think “well that’s just their job” when work is done well, but Nuvs outlines the power of saying thanks and how research supports that appreciation for work done elevates employee mental health and productivity. Dr. Laura and Nuvs address how the workplace culture is affected by what’s role modeled and that leaders are the ones who need to make the change. A lack of empathy and a rise of toxic bosses has waylaid appreciation, but the impact of offering thanks can’t be ignored. This episode explores human connection, gratitude, and how recognition increases workplace wellness.  “I've talked about emotion before, and empathy. And that's really what I think is a key difference when someone says thank you. First of all, they're expressing gratitude. They're recognizing something you've done. And that actually makes you feel like, oh, I matter. I'm actually doing something here for the organization. And that drives that sense of belonging.” - Navin ‘nuvs’ Jain About Navin ‘nuvs’ Jain: Based in Boston, MA, Navin ‘nuvs’ Jain is a Product Evangelist at Workhuman, and previously spent five years developing the core recognition features of the Workhuman Cloud. A Workhuman solutions veteran, Nuvs previously led the effort to bring Service Milestones, Life Events, and Inclusion Advisor to market. How to Feel Better: Understanding Our Emotional Palette to Thrive in Work and Life
2025/12/02
Dr. Laura welcomes Dr. Shahana Alibhai, a TEDx speaker, bestselling author, family physician, and medical director of The Foundry Abbotsford, to the show to talk about her book, Feel Better, and the need for more focus on mental health, especially for youth. Dr. Shahana points out that medicine is very focused on illness, on diagnosing disease and offering treatment, whereas mental health requires holding space for belonging, acceptance, and mattering. She and Dr. Laura explore what it takes to navigate emotions and thrive in life. The proceeds from Dr. Shahana’s book sales go to support youth mental health agencies, and she drew on her own experiences with postpartum OCD and the reluctance she felt, as a physician, to seek professional help. Dr. Shahana and Dr. Laura explore the coping mechanisms we turn to and whether they’re useful long-term, the benefits of being open about our emotional states, and the lessons in Feel Better. Dr. Shahana likens understanding others to envisioning an invisible chalkboard above them listing what’s really going on in their lives, the parts we don’t automatically see. This is a beautifully authentic conversation that sheds light on the reality of what emotional struggle is, how to cope with stress and anxiety, and how to prolong the joy we seek. “Does it come as a friend and leave as a friend, or does it come as a friend and leave as an enemy? … Vaping, substances, alcohol, the list goes on and on. Comes as a friend. Of course it works. It works oftentimes. Leaves as an enemy. It takes more from you than you want.” - Dr. Shahana Alibhai About Dr. Shanana Alibhai: TEDx speaker, bestselling author, and powerhouse in the field of emotional health. As a dedicated family physician and Medical Director at Foundry Abbotsford—British Columbia’s largest youth health centre—Dr. Shahana has made it her mission to empower others with the tools to navigate their emotional well-being. Her debut book, Feel Better, endorsed by the legendary Mel Robbins, soared to #1 in and Parenting on Amazon. A sought-after speaker, she has worked with top organizations like Yale University, UBC, Scotiabank, and Remax, bringing clarity to the crucial connection between emotional and mental health. Dr. Shahana’s insights have captivated audiences on major media platforms, including CTV and Global, and her wisdom has even made it to Hollywood—the quote, “We do not suffer from a lack of joy, simply a lack of recognizing it”, was handpicked for an award-winning planner gifted to celebrities at the Oscars. She has also been featured in Medium - Authority Magazine, where she shared her expertise on emotional resilience and well-being. In recognition of her impact, she has been nominated for the prestigious 2025 YWCA Women of Distinction Award. Passionate about education and outreach, she created the groundbreaking "Think Like a Doc" program, where students step into the shoes of a physician, learning about both their physical and mental health. She has also contributed to global mental health initiatives, volunteering her time to support communities in developing nations like Nepal. Beyond her work in medicine and advocacy, Dr. Shahana is a proud mom to three energetic young boys who keep her on her toes and continuously teach her the true meaning of patience, resilience, and joy. Balancing a thriving career with the beautiful chaos of motherhood, she brings a refreshingly real and relatable perspective to her audiences. When she’s not on stage, in the clinic, or chasing after her little ones, Dr. Shahana serves as a National Accreditor for the College of Canadian Family Physicians and has been a mentor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine Residency Training Program. Her TEDx talk, "Emotional Literacy for Better Mental Health", has resonated with thousands, cementing her as a leading voice in the space of well-being and resilience. With a unique ability to blend science, storytelling, and real-world strategies, Dr. Shahana leaves every audience inspired, informed, and ready to feel better.  Resources: Website: DrShahana.com LinkedIn YouTube Instagram Book: “Feel Better” by Dr. Shahana Alibhai, MD  Learn more about Dr. The Gaslighting Boss: Surviving Mind Games at Work
2025/11/18
In this episode, Dr. Laura explores one of the eight personas a toxic boss can inhabit: the gaslighter. A gaslighting boss tends to be very covert in manipulative behavior. She defines gaslighting as manipulating another person into doubting their own perceptions, experiences, and understanding of events. Navigating a gaslighting boss erodes self-confidence and depletes energy as all time is spent trying to deliver to expectations that keep shifting. Dr. Laura explains how to identify one of these types of toxic bosses and how to survive their subtle tactics. Gaslighting leaves us feeling exhausted and stressed. We doubt our own understanding and memory. We become increasingly dependent on validation from the gaslighter to verify what they tell us they said, instead of what we heard. And all this strain can spill over into our personal lives as well. Some steps can be taken to protect our recollection of facts, however, and Dr. Laura offers practical advice on documenting what we observe and are instructed to do. With every talk and video she shares about toxic bosses, she’s reaching out to those of us doubting ourselves and suffering to say that our mental health matters and that there is a way out. “When you are gaslit, it can really erode your confidence, and it can make you feel like you're almost losing your mind. So again, it’s very important to seek a trusted therapist that you can talk through this with and work on recovery strategies. And in my upcoming book, I Wish I'd Quit Sooner, I do have a whole chapter all about the recovery process, because it is a form of trauma. When we work for a gaslighter and many other types of toxic bosses, it is trauma that we go through, and we need to recover our physical, emotional, and mental health after this experience.” - Dr. Laura About Dr. Laura: Dr. Laura Hambley Lovett is a work and career psychologist and thought leader on the evolution of work. 2025/11/04
Dr. Laura welcomes Laura Munson, the #1 New York Times, USA Today, and international best-selling author of novel “Willa’s Grove”, memoir “This Is Not the Story You Think It Is”, and recent self-help book “The Wild Why”, to the show.  Laura Munson tells Dr. Laura about the impetus behind the writing of her new book, “The Wild Why”, and her passion for bringing wonder back into the world. As Laura explains, wonder can release our creativity and free us from the hustle culture that leads to burnout.  When Laura Munson talks about writing from a place of service, she’s referring to her epiphany that she wanted to write “to shine a light on a dim or otherwise pitch black corner, to provide relief for myself and others”. That has shaped much of her career since. She and Dr. Laura discuss how imposter syndrome and a fear of failure can be reframed, the inner critters or saboteurs we all have within us, the dangerous reality of burnout, and how to value the questions in life that lead to wonder. This interview opens us up to a new way of looking at our fears and engaging with the world around us for positive benefit.   “I'm not saying put down your sword of ambition or your dream to impact the world and yourself in it. I'm just saying that when we grasp the small moments that are full of wonder all around us, that's when I feel that we can truly be connecting with ourselves so that we can authentically connect with the world around us, whether it's career or interpersonal relationships.” - Laura Munson About Laura Munson: Laura Munson is the New York Times, USA Today, and international best-selling author of the novel Willa’s Grove, the memoir This Is Not The Story You Think It Is, and the self-help book The Wild Why. Lessons From a Blind Man and His Guide Dog Who Worked Together as a Team to Escape From the World Trade Center on 9-11
2025/10/21
Dr. Laura welcomes #1 New York Times Best-Selling Author and Inspirational Speaker Michael Hingson to Where Work Meets Life™for a conversation about his escape from the World Trade Center with his guide dog Roselle and the lessons we can all learn from their teamwork. Michael shares his story of being born blind, never allowing that fact to hold him back, and how the trust between him and his guide dog helped him overcome fear on a very dark day. His advocacy for disability access and employment is now changing the world alongside his story. On 9/11, Michael Hingson was at work in the World Trade Center when the first plane hit the tower. In the panic that followed, Michael’s guide dog Roselle stayed calm, which allowed him to also remain calm and use his emergency preparedness knowledge to work with Roselle to walk down 78 flights of stairs to safety. Thirty other people followed them down and also escaped. Michael explains how teamwork with a guide dog works, how overcoming fear is part of everyone’s life, and the ways in which his parents set the tone for his life by raising him with the belief that he could do anything. Dr. Laura learns about important accessibility tools, why disabilities are not limitations, and the power of hope in these trying times from Michael. “I learned all I could about everything concerning the World Trade Center, where things were, where all the emergency exits were, what the process was, even what the firefighters would be doing when they come up the stairs. I learned all of that so that I would know in reality. And as we all know, knowledge is power. And so by knowing all that, what I never thought about was until much after September 11th, when the emergency happened and the plane hit the building, and it tipped, and then it came back vertical, a mindset kicked in that said, you know what to do and how to get out of here. And so I didn't allow fear to overwhelm me. I just focused and used every skill in my body to focus, to deal with the events. And among other things, observed Roselle, and how she was behaving. And she never exhibited fear.” - Michael Hingson About Michael Hingson: Michael Hingson is a #1 New York Times Best-selling Author & Inspirational Speaker. On September 11, 2001, a blind man escaped the World Trade Center by walking down 78 flights of stairs with his guide dog. Days later, America fell in love with Mike and Roselle and the special bond that helped them both survive one of the country’s darkest days. Immediately after the 9-11 tragedy, Michael was featured on the Larry King show five times. To quote Larry King… “Michael Hingson is an international hero honored and awarded by top organizations worldwide.” This media exposure changed the course of Michael’s life and launched him into a speaking career that has spanned over nineteen years. He now travels the world as a keynote and inspirational speaker who can motivate audiences to action. Righting Injustice: A Powerful Story of Surviving & Thriving Post-Wrongful Conviction
2025/10/07
Dr. Laura welcomes wrongful conviction expert and attorney Jeffrey Deskovic and filmmaker Jia Rizvi to Where Work Meets Life™for an eye-opening conversation about wrongful conviction and exoneration advocacy. Jeffrey Deskovic was wrongfully convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and spent sixteen years in prison, from age seventeen to thirty-three, until he was exonerated by DNA evidence. Jia Rizvi is a documentary filmmaker passionate about telling stories of wrongful convictions, whose short documentary, Conviction, and upcoming full documentary, Sixteen Years, are about Jeffrey Deskovic’s story. Dr. Laura hosts a raw and illuminating discussion on Jeffrey’s story, wrongful convictions and the advocacy work required to exonerate the innocent, and Jia’s career in telling these stories. Jeffrey Deskovic has since become a public speaker, author, teacher, and attorney, and established the Deskovic Foundation to fight for those wrongfully accused the way he was. He tells his harrowing story openly and with a desire to shed light on coerced convictions, wrongful convictions, and what is required to prevent other innocent people from sacrificing years of their lives to a sentence they didn’t deserve. Jia Rizvi became interested in the subject of wrongful convictions when she watched The Hurricane, the film about Reuben Carter that starred Denzel Washington. She embarked on a life of advocacy for the imprisoned innocent and went to film school so she could more effectively tell their stories to larger audiences. The conversation is open, honest, and deeply insightful, opening a door into a world we don’t think enough about. Jia and Jeffrey talk with Dr. Laura about prison reform, the reality of advocacy work, and what it takes to reintegrate into society after being wrongfully imprisoned. “So when you add it all up, I was wrongfully convicted of a murder and rape. I was given a 15-year-to-life sentence. I was sent to a maximum security prison where, you know, I lost seven appeals. I got turned down for parole, largely because I maintained my innocence, rather than expressing remorse and taking responsibility. Ultimately, I was exonerated through further DNA testing.” - Jeffrey Deskovic About Jeffrey Deskovic: Jeffrey was wrongfully convicted for the brutal rape and murder of his high school classmate, Angela Correa, and spent sixteen years in prison from age seventeen to thirty-three until he was finally exonerated by DNA evidence.   Since his exoneration, Jeffrey has delivered over 100 presentations, authored over 200 articles, and given hundreds of print, radio, and television interviews, including multiple appearances on CNN, Al Jazeera America, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He has testified at legislative hearings in New York and Connecticut, where wrongful conviction prevention legislation was considered and worked collaboratively with New Yorkers Against The Death Penalty to ward off capital punishment reinstatement efforts in New York in 2007, and helped legislatively repeal the death penalty in Connecticut. He has conducted numerous seminars at judicial gatherings, bar associations, prosecutorial groups, and other professional associations, is certified as a police and correctional instructor, and has given numerous lectures to soon-to-be graduating classes of police and correction officers.  Jeffrey is a graduate of Mercy College with a B.A. in Behavioral Science and has a master’s degree from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where he wrote a thesis on the causes of wrongful conviction, along with the reforms needed to address them. He co-designed a wrongful conviction college course syllabus, which was taught at Farleigh Dickinson University, and co-taught a wrongful conviction college course as an adjunct professor at Rockland Community College. He was listed in John Jay College of Criminal Justice’s “Fifty at Fifty” book as one of the top 50 standout students in John Jay’s 50-year history, and in 2014 won New York 1’s “New Yorker of the Week” award. In 2015, he won the “Humanitarian of the Year” award from the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce. He used $1.5 million of the compensation from his wrongful conviction to establish The Deskovic Foundation, which exonerates the wrongfully convicted and seeks to improve our criminal justice system to prevent wrongful convictions in the future. The Foundation has already exonerated five innocent people and helped free eight other clients while fighting to establish their innocence. Most recently, Jeffry entered Pace University to pursue a law degree. He obtained his law degree from the Elizabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, twice making the Dean’s List. He is now licensed to practice law in New York State, as well as the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Soul Health: Why it Matters More Than Ever for a Thriving Workplace
2025/09/23
Dr. Laura welcomes Pamela Buchanan, the Founder of Quantum Sense, to the podcast to discuss the innovation of Soul Health and why it’s a missing component in today’s workplaces. Pam worked in corporate America, including at Nasdaq, for over forty years before investing over a decade of research into the concepts and framework for Soul Health. Pam defines what the soul is and how nourishing it is connected to workplace environments and individual well-being.   A three-step program called Ground, Elevate, Evolve is one of the main focuses of Pam’s business, Quantum Sense. Pam asserts that people are not grounded in themselves and don’t know themselves at a deep level, a soul level. Part of reaching the soul is rooted in aesthetics - smell, touch, sound - and how these variables affect each individual differently. Pam’s research into how the sensory information in our environments calibrates with our nervous systems highlights aspects of neuroaesthetics and sound engineering, showcasing a system rooted in neuroscience more than religion. Pam and Dr. Laura explore the key trio of soul, mind, and body in their conversation and why neglecting the soul contributes to unhealthy workplaces.   “You know, it has been more difficult than I thought to get business because I speak directly about the soul, and it's just not a common term that you see in business every day. And that's why I try to say no, it's a part of a person that they bring into work every day. You've tackled the physical; you wouldn't want an unhealthy workplace, so you give them tools to keep their physical presence healthy. Why wouldn't you give them tools to keep their soul presence healthy?” - Pamela Buchanan About Pamela Buchanan: Pam Buchanan, the founder of Quantum Sense, stands at the intersection of corporate prowess and soulful innovation. With over 40 years of experience in corporate America, including pivotal roles at Nasdaq where she worked closely with tech titans like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, Pam brings extensive experience to the table.     Her journey to Quantum Sense began with a profound assertion: that the modern world is missing a focus on a very vital contributor to success, Soul Health. This insight spurred over a decade of research culminating in her innovative concepts and frameworks. Pam's background uniquely positions her to understand the evolving corporate landscape and the benefit of putting an emphasis on a connection to the senses to drive Soul Health and holistic wellbeing at work.   Pam has developed programs tailored for companies that are proven to enhance employee well-being, reduce anxiety, and boost creativity, ultimately fostering a more satisfying work-life balance. Covering topics from neuro-aesthetics to sound engineering, Pam explores how these can be used to benefit the soul from the outside in, through the gateway of the senses.   As a podcast guest, Pam offers a unique perspective rooted in her corporate experience, deep understanding of Soul Health, and her commitment to ushering in a future where individuals thrive both personally and professionally with Soul Health valued as widely as physical health and mental health. From Employee to Entrepreneur: Listening to Your Inner Voice
2025/09/09
Dr. Laura welcomes Jana Boyko, business coach and author of Bedside Business Plan and the upcoming Employee to Entrepreneur, to the podcast for a conversation on entrepreneurship and self confidence. Jana describes her journey from doing a BCom and working for a marketing firm to striking out on her own as an entrepreneur and the failures and successes she experienced on that path. Dr. Laura learns how Jana’s guided journals are designed to guide entrepreneurs through the steps of starting a business with a focus on understanding ourselves and our ideas.   Jana chose the guided journal format for both Bedside Business Plan and Employee to Entrepreneur because of the enlightening experience she had when she put pen to paper and removed the barrier of the screen from her journaling. Dr. Laura and Jana discuss that what holds entrepreneurs, especially woman, back from business success isn’t necessarily a lack of business skills but a prevailing sense of self-doubt and fear of judgment. Businesses aren’t built in isolation but in connection, support, and learning from those who went before, and this episode highlights how Jana is laying a foundation for true understanding of the journey ahead, based on her own insights, for future entrepreneurs. “Make a list of 20 reasons why you are going to be a successful entrepreneur. Include your past, you know, achievements, personality traits, things people love about you, great feedback you've gotten in the past, and then reference that list every single day. Because I think especially when you're entering new territory as an entrepreneur, you feel so wobbly. I felt so wobbly when I when I became an entrepreneur, even though I had the business background. But it's really important to fortify yourself and to remember who you are in this experience, and to remember everything that you are bringing to entrepreneurship, so that when self-doubt does come up, when the fear does come up, you can really have this list that sort of replaces that fear, right?” - Jana Boyko About Jana Boyko: In the last decade, Jana has worked with over 100 brands and businesses from the very small to the very big. She’s the author of Bedside Business Plan, a guided journal for aspiring entrepreneurs, which has climbed to national success since launching with Indigo in 2022 and being named a Staff Pick in January 2023. Jana’s body of work is dedicated to helping people expand into their highest potential while building businesses in ways that are both sustainable and life-giving. She has been featured as an expert on CBC, Breakfast Television, and The Eyeopener in addition to delivering a number of important talks at organizations and institutions like Elate Cosmetics, the University of Calgary, and Royal Roads University. Workplace Wellness Redefined: How Your Environment Impacts Your Health
2025/08/26
Dr. Laura welcomes Dr. Esther Sternberg, M.D., a Professor, Research Director, Speaker, and Author of the books Well at Work, Healing Spaces, and The Balance Within, to the podcast to talk about wellness at work and how workplace environments impact employees. Dr. Sternberg shares her career journey from her start in medical family practice through to becoming the Research Director at the Andrew Weil Center of Integrative Medicine. She and Dr. Laura talk about what factors impact health and overall wellness at work and how these can be improved. Dr. Sternberg delves into the insights in her book Well at Work and explains the seven domains of integrative health as defined by the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine. Sleep, resilience, environment, movement, relationships, spirituality, and nutrition are the seven domains, and they include things like how quickly we bounce back from stress, how clean our air is, and access to nature. Dr. Laura and Dr. Sternberg examine how office design, environmental location, common spaces that encourage relationships, and even temperature all play a key role in our workplace health. The conversation sheds light on how work isn’t simply a place to invest time into productivity, but can positively or negatively impact our overall lives, and how redefining workplaces is a vital part of future discussions.  “... if you're feeling too stressed or too activated, you want to do something that will tone down that stress response so you can perform at peak... If you're too stressed, you freeze, you're unable to focus. You're unable to do the job, the task at hand. So what helps you to move that stress response from the extreme danger zone back to performing at peak is places where you can go offline a little bit, where you can effectively meditate even though you're not sitting there with crossed legs in a lotus position in a yoga studio, although having spaces where some people can do that is is also beneficial. But a space, for example, [like] the gardens. To just walk in the gardens, to just take your brain off the computer for a while and focus on the green, on the plants.” - Dr. Esther Sternberg About Dr. Esther Sternberg, M.D.: Dr. Esther Sternberg is internationally recognized for her discoveries in the science of the mind-body interaction in illness and healing, and the role of place in wellbeing. She is a pioneer and major force in collaborative initiatives on mind-body-stress-wellness and environment interrelationships. A dynamic speaker, she engages her audience with passion for her subject and compassion as a physician. Through stories, she provides listeners with many take-home tips to help them cope with stress and thrive, and to create wellbeing spaces wherever they work or live. Dr. Sternberg’s three popular, highly readable, informative, and scientifically based books are inspirations for lay persons and professionals alike, seeking answers to the complexities and 21st-century frontiers of stress, place, healing, and wellness. Her award-winning book, WELL at WORK: Creating Wellbeing in Any Workspace (Little, Brown Spark, 2023) was named a Top Ten Lifestyle Book for Fall 2023 by Publishers Weekly and received the OWL (Outstanding Works of Literature) Longlist Award. Her two previous science-for-the-lay public books, Healing Spaces: The Science of Place and Well-Being and The Balance Within: The Science Connecting Health and Emotions, are landmark in its field. Healing Spaces was recognized by the President of the American Institute of Architects as an inspiration for launching the AIA’s Design and Health Initiative and has inspired the implementation of healing spaces in hospitals across the country and around the world. Currently, Research Director, Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine and Founding Director of the University of Arizona Institute on Place, Wellbeing & Performance, she holds the Inaugural Andrew Weil Chair for Research in Integrative Medicine and is a Research Professor of Medicine with joint appointments as Professor in Psychology, Architecture, and Planning & Landscape Architecture, and in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, School of Nutritional Sciences and Wellness. As Senior Scientist and Section Chief, National Institutes of Health (1986-2012), she directed the NIH Integrative Neural Immune Program, Co-Chaired the NIH Intramural Program on Research on Women’s Health, and chaired a subcommittee of the NIH Central Tenure Committee. Dr. Sternberg has advised the World Health Organization; the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine; the International WELL Building Institute; the Royal Society, London; the Vatican, where she was presented to Pope Benedict XVI; and has briefed high-level U.S. Federal Government officials, including the Surgeon General, National Institutes of Health leadership, and the Department of Defence. Her two decades-long research with the U.S. General Services Administration, using wearable devices to track health and wellbeing in the built office environment, is informing healthy design standards and COVID re-entry across the federal government and the private sector. Avoiding Binge or Bust: How to Balance Our Health in Social and Work Situations
2025/08/12
Dr. Laura welcomes Kirkland Shave, co-founder of the Mountain Trek health reset retreat, back to Where Work Meets Life™ for an honest and open conversation about mindful health and steering clear of binge or bust thinking in our eating and social situations. Dr. Laura uses her own life after her experience at Mountain Trek to illustrate the kind of “falling off the wagon” thinking that we tend to catastrophize. Kirk showcases how Laura, and by extension, each one of us, can shift our thinking to offer ourselves more grace.  Dr. Laura openly shares some of the nutritional and social choices she made that she views as falling off the health wagon and discusses with Kirk why one-off situations should not redirect our entire health focus into one of negativity. Kirk emphasizes self-compassion, a way of accepting the days when we can’t make the health choices we want to and simply allowing them to happen before getting back into our routine. Their conversation includes a vulnerable talk about alcohol and social drinking, the variety of non-alcoholic craft beer/cocktail options available, how to avoid instinctive self-judgment when we make an unhealthy choice, and ways to incorporate mindful health into events and travel. This episode offers a way forward after we’ve made a less-than-nutritious choice without the guilt that society demands we bear. “I think contextualizing our life in what we do the most matters the most, rather than the one-offs that we should be hard on ourselves about. Okay, so, in that week, that one meal and maybe there's another one at the conference that you didn't have much control over. Those two meals are not going to be a deal breaker or a derailment for your whole life, or make you give up [your] conscious focus on eating well. So I think it's really about us having a bit of grace for what comes up day to day in our lives that is unexpected. That was an unexpected occurrence that you didn't really have control over.” - Kirkland Shave About Kirkland Shave: Kirkland Shave, founder and president of the world-renowned Mountain Trek program, now offers off-site interactive and eye-opening workshops — grounded in anthropological health science — to help professionals integrate lasting steps in reaching optimal wellness. With an inspiring, practical, and actionable message, Kirkland helps people see their own health through a fresh and practical lens. With half- and full-day interactive health workshops and keynote presentations — designed specifically for a corporate audience — held at your company’s headquarters, Kirkland’s life-changing interactive presentation can be tailored to meet a number of health issues: Fitness, Nutrition, De-Stressing, Sleep Hygiene, Physical and Digital Detoxification, Habit Formation, Mindfulness. His proven approach increases energy, productivity, and establishes long-lasting health habits. The program incorporates scientific anthropology blended with a distinctly mountain-centric approach to health. With 18 years’ experience as president and founder of Mountain Trek’s holistic health and vitality program, Kirkland brings more than 40 years of health-focused lifestyle expertise, with experience as a fitness instructor, lead hiking guide, wellness coach, Wilderness Park Manager, yoga instructor and meditation practitioner. Evolving Leadership in These Evocative Times: Wisdom From the Queer Community
2025/07/29
Dr. Laura welcomes Dr. Joel Davis Brown. Chief Visionary Officer of Pneumos LLC, sought-after speaker, and author of “The Souls of Queer Folk: How Understanding LGBTQ+ Culture Can Transform Your Leadership Practice”, to Where Work Meets Life™ to talk about his journey, leadership, and what we can all learn from the queer community. Joel discusses how he worked to uncover what it means to be queer from an ethnographic standpoint, validating and understanding the community, in order to understand their leadership lessons.  Joel and Dr. Laura explore the nine queer leadership principles from Joel’s book, including justice, verve, resilience, and interconnectedness, which are core leadership competencies everyone should embrace. Joel highlights the importance of gratitude, differentiating it from toxic positivity, the significance of coming out, how leaders must heal themselves to do transformational work, and how soulful leadership embodies the essence of an individual. The conversation illuminates the depths of experience in the queer community, the insights Joel has pulled from the community to write his book, and the power of interconnectedness and storytelling. “Leadership is a life book. It's not a business book. So leadership applies to how you lead yourself, how you interact and engage with your family, your spouse, your children, your community, and yes, with the world. And so in that space, I think there's an opportunity for people to learn and to benefit from the wisdom of the queer community, asking: how can I be better as an individual? How can I be a better version of myself? How can I have a better relationship with my family? How can I support my organization? And also, how can we create a better planet? So that's in essence what this book is about.” Dr. Joel Davis Brown About Dr. Joel Davis Brown Esq., Ed.D., CLC: Dr. Joel A. Davis Brown is the Chief Visionary Officer of Pneumos LLC, a management consulting company based in San Francisco, California, and Nairobi, Kenya, specializing in cultural intelligence, leadership development, organizational strategy and change management, and strategic storytelling. Best known for his critical analysis, creativity, humor, and his ability to build consensus, Joel has partnered with Fortune 500 Companies, non-profit organizations, and government agencies to help them achieve sustained growth and organizational breakthroughs. He has worked with the City and County of San Francisco, Apple, Workday, UserTesting, the United Nations, Pivotal Enterprises, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the American Civil Liberties Union, and many other Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and institutions of learning. Joel is a member of several professional communities, including SIETAR, SIETAR Europa, Young SIETAR, and the International Association of Cross-Cultural Management. Joel is also a certified facilitator with the Cultural Detective suite of intercultural tools. Joel has his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law and his doctorate in educational leadership from Saint Mary’s College of California, which included domestic and international coursework in design thinking, global citizenship, innovation, and peace education. Joel has travelled to nearly 95+ countries, is conversational in Spanish, and has studied abroad in Costa Rica. Joel is also a nationally recognized spoken word artist in the United States.
