This episode begins the second season with an informal discussion about the recent changes to safe abortion access in Texas. This includes why safe access matters and who will be most impacted.

The ninth episode of Defining Deviant introduces Highway 16 of British Columbia, Canada. This highway is also known as the Highway of Tears, due to the prevalence of missing and murdered women along this 724-kilometre stretch of road. Many of these women were Indigenous, and many more are known to have disappeared. Despite only 18 police-accepted victims, there are likely upwards of 80 victims, at the hands at numerous killers across several decades. Despite the continued push for justice for these victims, the government has failed to implement most recommendations made regarding how women can be safer. The sixth episode of Defining Deviant discusses the Criminal Code of Canada, and the three levels of sexual assault. Part 1 discusses sexual assault, crime statistics, and crimes that are never reported. Also included is a discussion on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and how colonial violence is related.

The fifth episode of Defining Deviant discusses the Criminal Code of Canada, and what it legally means to commit a sex crime. Part 1 discusses C-46, the Sexual Offences, Public Morals, and Disorderly Conduct section. Included are crimes such as sexual interference, sending an intimate image without consent, and corrupting the morals of children. Part 2 will focus on the history and three levels of sexual assault.

The fourth episode of Defining Deviant reviews how the psychological diagnoses of paraphilias are often used to criminalize sexual behaviours. Included is a discussion of Crystal’s research into paraphilias in non-clinical settings, and how it relates to other research. Also examined is the training clinicians can use to enhance their own knowledge and skills, especially with regard to kink among Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour communities.

The first case study of the podcast examines the 23 year investigation into the disappearance of Kristin Smart, drawing insight from the extensive information provided in the Your Own Backyard podcast. Discussed are Flores’ red flag behaviours, as well as how others in his life experienced him. Also included is a brief examination of intersectional factors in missing cases to be explored in future episodes.

The third episode of Defining Deviant reviews the definitions of the eight common paraphilic disorders: Exhibitionism, Fetishism, Frotteurism, Voyeurism, Pedophilia, Sadism, Masochism, and Transvestic Fetishism. Also discussed are hebephilia, infibulation, necrophilia within the context of sexually motivated homicide, and “other” paraphilias.
