S6E1: Black Men and Lawn Care
2026/03/23
Welcome to a new season of the Sophisticated Black Man podcast! If you can believe it, this is year 6 of the podcast and I'm hoping to get back on track with topics to talk about that we have yet to discuss. In the season premiere episode, we're talking about lawn care and maintenance. I talk about my history when it comes to lawn care, which includes my mother doing most of the lawn care for my childhood home, how it became a bonding experience for my dad and myself, and why I think it'll be a great bonding experience for my son and I. We then talk about what lawn care is going on at the house and how another friendly neighborhood black man is helping me on that journey and how to get the best out of your lawn. Thank you for sticking with me through the ups and downs through 6 seasons of the podcast! I am extremely thankful for all of your support with this podcast! Here's to 6 more!
Coach Burke is free…
2026/02/07
Nearly 9 months later, a familiar voice returns…discussing what’s been going on with life, and what the future holds for him…he asks…will you listen to him again? He hopes you do..
S5E2: Coach Burke is stepping away..
2025/05/23
The title of this episode is not a joke. I am stepping away from coaching. I don't want to say I'm retiring or I'm quitting coaching because I don't quit something I love to do. I chose to step away from coaching/was essentially forced to step away from coaching. Both of these factors are explained. I chose to step away from coaching because I want to help raise my newborn son alongside my wife. I was forced to step away because of the county I teach in does not care about athletics. But one thing is for certain: Coach Burke will return...

S5E1.5: Black Men and Education Part 1.5: The State of Public Education
2025/02/24
As a disclaimer, the words spoken in this episode are of my own accord and a right of free speech. With that disclaimer out of the way, today's episode talks about the state of education (specifically public education), how school choice will lead more parents to sending their kids to private school over public school, and why that is beneficial for some. I also provide some personal examples of the major factors of the decline of education, and I explain how I am more than a "classroom teacher". Plus there are some small life updates as well. Again, this is a work of art and literature. Educators in different states, if you're experiencing or have experienced sorta the same things, please let me know! Enjoy!
S4E3: Black People and Cookouts: No raisins please!
2024/04/05
In this 2 of 2 doubleheader episode of this week, I April Fools prank you with an episode about lawn care and maintenance and talk about something that has been embedded in the African-American culture and that is of course the cookout. I talk about the origins of the cookout, with its beginnings in the Native American culture and how it lead to a complex relationship between Natives and Black people, plus about how to spot signs that your food may or may not be good. Plus, I reminisce about my childhood cookout memories and the love and jubilee spread during those times. Finally, it's the Wrap Up. So put on your best grilling shoes, put on your favorite cookout tunes, and let's get this grill fired up!
S4E2: Black People and Time: CPT aye?
2024/04/01
In this 1 of 2 scheduled doubleheader for this week, we talk about the topic that a lot of you probably weren't thinking about, but wondered about and that is time or the concept of it. Let's be honest, 24 hours in a day isn't enough for most people to do any and all things they want to do. We talk about the origins of time. how your circadian rhythm plays into that effect and why the tern "CPT" is actually detrimental to Black culture. I also give a break down of what my daily schedule looks like and why I think 30 hours of Mars still wouldn't be enough to accomplish what I would want to do. Then it's the Wrap Up.
The 3 in 1 Special: Life/Birthday/Job Posting episode
2024/03/08
Hey, I know what I said earlier in the year...it's fine, everything is fine. This is just a small taste of what is coming next. This is the short life update as well as the birthday episode to celebrate the SBM's 29th birthday and a job posting for those who have experience in audio/video editing. If you're interested, please send me an email with resume @[email protected]. Venmo and Cashapp are in the episode. Enjoy and holla at ya boy! :)
S4E1: Black People and Comic Books Part 1: This is Bulletproof Love
2024/01/15
In this first episode of the new year and first episode of this series, I explore more of the nerdier side of things and that is comic books. We've all heard Captain America, Iron Man, Spiderman, Superman, etc. But what about Lion Man? Ace Harlem? Lobo? Luke Cage, Black Panther? Spawn? These are just some of the most influential black comic book characters that we in the black community have come to appreciate. We talk about the origin of black superheroes, the first Black comic book, how it lead to the creation of black superheroes in comics and how those creations have lead to the landscape we have today of Black Comic book characters. I also talk about my favorite Black Comic book characters and my favorite non-Black Comic book character (who, in a sense, can relate to the Black struggle). So, kick off your shoes, relax your feet, and enjoy listening to this episode on MLK Day! Sweet Christmas!
The SBM 2023 WrapUp
2023/12/31
To keep it short, thank you all for listening to and sticking with the podcast this year. With your support, we can make this podcast the best one in 2024. Enjoy :)
The SBM Very Merry Holiday Special: Black Christmas Movies
2023/12/25
In this year's SBM Holiday Special, I go over my Top 5 favorite Black Christmas Movies. This list, I feel like, is a list that most of the African-American community can agree on as well as some of those in the Caucasian community as well. Some movies were left off, (not intentionally of course), 2 were honorable mentions and 1 got dragged through the mud because of how not funny it is (you know what movie you are). So enjoy this list, my lovely voice (and 2 not yet sponsored ad reads) as my gifts to you. Very Merry Holidays to y'all!
Episode 5: Peace in the Middle East (and Eastern Europe)
2023/10/23
In this second episode of a two episode doubleheader, I tackle the hottest political news stories in the news cycle, and no I'm not talking about the dumpster fire that is American politics. I'm talking about the current conflicts having in the Middle East and in Eastern Europe, in the former Eastern Bloc: The Ukraine-Russo conflict/war and the Israel-Hamas conflict/war. I talk about the facts that I know about both conflicts and I give my honest opinion on each subject. These are my opinions, so feel free to agree or disagree to what I have to say, that's the beauty of it all!
Episode 4: Sorry 4 the Wait, Life is Good 2
2023/10/23
In this return episode, I give an update on how my life has been going since the last time an episode came out (last one was June 6 of this year), so it's been quite some time, but we are mos definitely back. I talk about getting married, becoming a coach, new place of employment, and of course starting a family. Like Wayne said, Sorry 4 the Wait! Please enjoy this life update!
Episode 3: Black People and Food: Colonel Sanders DID NOT invent Fried Chicken
2023/06/06
In this week's episode, I talk about a topic that I am surprised no one thought about telling me to talk about from the beginning. What is considered the body's true life force (outside of water), what gives the body its soul, its energy. I'm, of course, talking about FOOD. This episode talks about every part of the world and the cultures it has blessed us with, the origin of Soul Food and the foods that were formed from it, and how the continuation of it for many generations in the Black community has lead to many adverse health effects, but has also lead the way for it to be included and even inspired other cultures to incorporate Soul Food into their culture. Plus, I talk about my expanded pallet of tasting and I give my top 5 food cultures ever, of all time. Then of course, it's the Wrap Up. There's a few important messages in this week's Wrap Up, so please be sure to listen to everything that is going on in the SBM and BSH podcasts. Also, follow the SBM podcast and the BSH on Spotify because we appreciate the support (and because Spotify has messed up how they now monetize podcast episodes.) So please, enjoy, subscribe, and follow. :)
Ep 2. SBM Presents: THE TOP TWO MOST RACIST FILMS EVER MADE
2023/05/24
In this "controversial" episode, I go over the top two most racist films ever made in the history of film. This topic was inspired by a dinner conversation about Disney and how blatantly racist Disney was in the 20th Century. THUS, this episode was born and I talk about four films that have been deemed by historians as being some of the most controversial films made in terms of stereotyping of African Americans and African American culture, including the use of white actors in blackface, use of Southern African-American dialect by white actors, the KKK being depicted as the heroes, helping to preserve American values, protect women white and promote white supremacy, but also are in the Library of Congress and the National Film Registry because of them being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, ONE OF THESE FILMS DID NOT ALLOW THE LEAD ACTOR, WHO WAS BLACK, IN THE MOVIE, WHICH WAS ABOUT A BLACK MAN AND HIS STORIES, TO ATTEND THE PREMIRE OF SAID MOVIE IN A NOW PREDOMINATLY BLACK CITY...BECAUSE HE WAS BLACK. This topic frustrated me so much in the beginning, but the ending helped picked my spirits up and I hope it does the same for you (as well as informs you). Enjoy this episode :)
Episode 1: Black People and Wrasslin (Wrestling): We Hate Hulk Hogan (for real)
2023/04/18
Hello my faithful listeners. Guess who's back? Back again. Unfortunately it is not Shady, but instead it's me! Your favorite SBM aka the Sophisticated Black Man. After a very long (almost 6 months, yeesh) hiatus, the SBM Podcast is back and in a new and hopefully enjoyable segment! That's right, I have now added in video podcasts as a part of my new format (although this is only currently available for Spotify users, everyone else will still get the audio version of it). But nonetheless, it feels great to be back recording the podcast for y'all again and I promise to not keep you guys waiting (at least for a long time like that again ;) ). In this triumph return to the podcast, I talk about the brand new format for the show and how it will be presented for an episode every so often. But the meat and potatoes of this podcast will be spent talking about everyone's favorite sport: wrasslin or wrestling for those who want proper English. We talk about the origins of it, from its Greco-Roman that everyone recognizes today as the actual sport, to where it became profitable in the 50s and 60s, how Black people have been participating in "sports entertainment" since slavery, to where it is today and how Black wrestlers of old (Rocky Johnson and company) have led to the rise of predominant Black wrestling. I also talk about my experiences watching wrasslin as a young Black kid, including the John Cena obsessions' to recently watching the latest WrestleMania. Again, it feels great to be back recording and providing the best content I possibly can, all for you guys. Welcome to year 2, season 3!
