The Map is a Manifesto: 5 Truths About Global Power That Your Textbooks Missed
2026/08/01
A lot of IR teaching still treats power like physics: measure enough variables and the world becomes predictable. But power is also language, maps, identity, and what we choose not to count. This piece breaks down five post-positivist truths that change how you read headlines, borders, and “common sense". Takeaway #1: Knowledge is a Tool, Not a Mirror For decades, mainstream International Relations (IR) was dominated by "Problem-Solving Theory." This approach takes the world’s existing power structures and institutional frameworks as a given, seeking to make them run more smoothly. It fixes the leaks in the ship without ever asking why the ship was built that way or where it is headed. “Theory is always for someone and for some purpose.” — Robert Cox Takeaway #2: Maps are Political Manifestos, Not Neutral Charts * The Mercator Projection: Designed in 1569, this map places Europe at the center and vastly inflates the northern hemisphere. This distortion did more than aid navigation; it reinforced the imagery of British Imperialism and later weaponized Cold War threat perceptions by making the Soviet Union appear far more massive and menacing than its actual scale. Takeaway #3: Security is a "Story" Used to Hide Internal Flaws Traditionalists view security as a reaction to objective external threats. However, post-structuralists like David Campbell and R.B.J. Walker argue that the state doesn't just react to dangers—it actively constructs them to define its own identity. Takeaway #4: The "Personal" Is the Foundation of the International * The unpaid emotional and "hospitality labour" of diplomats' wives, whose work facilitates the formal world of diplomacy. * The underpaid labour of women on plantations, which anchors the global economy of cheap exports. * The local service economies near military bases, often sustained by marginalised women. By ignoring these "bottom-up" realities, traditional theory fails to see how global power is reproduced daily through personal, gendered relationships. Takeaway #5: Climate Change as a "Governance Vacuum" Multiplier * Gaza: With 97% of local groundwater undrinkable due to saltwater intrusion and contamination, groups like Hamas and Hezbollah have historically built political legitimacy by providing the very environmental services and water infrastructure the formal state could not. * The Sahel & Lake Chad Basin: As land degrades, Boko Haram doesn't just recruit based on ideology; they carry out operations specifically during peak agricultural crises, targeting young men who have lost their livelihoods and feel abandoned by the state. * Middle East & Arabian Peninsula: In a region that has warmed by 1.5°C since 1900, groups like the Islamic State have weaponised the control of scarce water resources to enforce territorial control where central authorities have collapsed. * Pakistan: Following catastrophic floods, militant groups have exploited governance vacuums to distribute relief and aid, effectively circumventing and delegitimising state authority. #WaihigaKMuturi #LetsCreateAfrica #CreatorOfOpportunities #WaihigaIsImpact #TechDiplomacy #AfricanChangemakers #GlobalSouthLeaders #ImpactDrivenProfessionals #TechDiplomacy #ThoughtLeadership #Geopolitics #CriticalIR #PostPositivism #GlobalSouth #InclusiveInnovation #TechDiplomacy #IRTheory #CriticalTheory #PostStructuralism #PostColonialism #Feminism #PoliticalEcology #CriticalIR #Decolonisation #FeministPolitics #ClimateGovernance #GlobalSouth #InternationalRelations #CriticalTheory #Cartography #Securitization #FeministIR #ClimateSecurity #FeministIR
Why International Politics Is a Work of Fiction (and Why That’s Dangerous)
2026/07/26
International politics feels like steel and borders, but much of it is held together by shared beliefs. This episode unpacks the constructivist turn and why “reality” in world affairs is built, maintained, and sometimes weaponised through language, identity, and norms. We also explore the danger: when scholars treat constructed reality as neutral common sense, power gets to define what counts as “real”. #WaihigaKMuturi #LetsCreateAfrica #CreatorOfOpportunities #WaihigaIsImpact #TechDiplomacy #AfricanChangemakers #Constructivism #InternationalRelations #Ethics #PowerAndKnowledge #TechDiplomacy #Geopolitics #SpeechActs #Ethics #AIandDemocracy #PoliticsOfReality #Norms #Identity #GlobalSouthLeaders #IRTheory #Language #Narratives #DigitalGovernance #IdentityPolitics #ImpactDrivenProfessionals #AIForDevelopment #InclusiveInnovation #TacklingPovertyWithAI #FutureOfWorkInAfrica #MSMEEcosystems #DigitalRights #AIPolicy #DigitalTransformation #AfricaRisingTech #IndigenousInnovation #AIForGood #DataForDevelopment #GMelTech #YouthInTech #OpenStandards #RegionalInnovation
The Hidden Code of Global Conflict
2026/07/20
Global politics rarely has one clear “X-ray” explanation. This episode breaks down five counterintuitive truths that shape today’s conflicts: domestic interest groups driving state choices, why some weapons feel scarier than bigger arsenals, the logic behind the “separate peace” among democracies, Wendt’s claim that anarchy is socially made, and Hollis and Smith’s “two stories” rule. If you work in policy, media, or tech, this framework helps you read the news with sharper instincts and fewer illusions. This podcast explains five counter-intuitive truths about global conflict using major IR traditions. It covers liberal micro-foundations (domestic preferences), constructivist threat perception (brute facts vs social facts), the democratic “separate peace", Wendt’s argument that anarchy is socially constructed, and Hollis and Smith’s “two stories” approach. It closes with a practical question for the information age: how do we sustain cooperation when trust and transparency are under attack? Explores social constructivism's role in IR, focusing on ideas, consciousness, and norms shaping international systems beyond material forces, with key theorists and debates highlighted. #WaihigaKMuturi #LetsCreateAfrica #CreatorOfOpportunities #WaihigaIsImpact #TechDiplomacy #AfricanChangemakers #GlobalSouthLeaders #ImpactDrivenProfessionals #InternationalRelations #Geopolitics #Liberalism #Constructivism #AIandDemocracy #InformationIntegrity #TechDiplomacy #GlobalSouthLeaders #AfricanChangemakers #IRTheory #Geopolitics #InternationalRelations #Realism #Constructivism #DemocraticPeace #AIForDevelopment #DigitalGovernance #TechDiplomacy #AIForDevelopment #InclusiveInnovation #TacklingPovertyWithAI #FutureOfWorkInAfrica #MSMEEcosystems #DigitalRights #AIPolicy #DigitalTransformation #AfricaRisingTech #IndigenousInnovation #AIForGood #DataForDevelopment #GMelTech #YouthInTech #OpenStandards #RegionalInnovation
How Liberalism Prevents War Between Democracies
2026/07/19
Democracies do not just cause peace among themselves; they also face deep tensions with outsiders. In this episode, we unpack five counter-intuitive truths about liberal peace and explore what they mean for policy, technology, and development in Africa and the Global South. We discuss why the assumption that democracy equals peace is flawed and how institutions that produce restraint among allies can provoke conflict elsewhere. 1. The Paradox of the "Crusade for Freedom"In June 1982, President Ronald Reagan stood before the British Parliament and proclaimed that governments founded on individual liberty exercise "restraint" and "peaceful intentions". Yet, in the same breath, he announced a "crusade for freedom" and a global campaign for democratic development. This dissonance unmasks the foundational irony of the liberal tradition: a deep-seated belief in peace that frequently manifests as a persistent drive for conflict. While we assume democracy is the natural antidote to war, the historical record suggests a more complex, shadowed reality. States founded on the rights of the individual are indeed capable of establishing profound peace, but they are equally prone to justifying immense aggression. Understanding why requires looking beyond "peaceful intentions" into the hidden logic of how liberal states perceive themselves and their neighbors. 2. The "Separate Peace" Paradox: Amity for Friends, Enmity for StrangersInternational Relations’ most enduring observation, and perhaps its most dangerous, is the "pacific union." As theorized by Immanuel Kant and synthesized by Michael Doyle, liberal republics have established a "separate peace" among themselves that has endured for nearly two centuries. Within this union, states exercise a "presumption of amity," treating fellow liberals as moral equals deserving of accommodation. However, this peace is strictly exclusive. Liberal states remain highly prone to war with non-liberal states, often viewing them with a "presumption of enmity." Because non-liberal governments do not rest on the free consent of their citizens, liberal states perceive them as being in a state of aggression against their own people. This ontological suspicion makes the foreign relations of autocracies deeply suspect in the eyes of the West."Liberal states fight only for popular, ostensibly liberal purposes since elites need to be constantly concerned about domestic support for the war effort."3. Machiavelli’s Twist: Why Liberty is the Ultimate Engine for EmpireContrary to the modern image of the pacifist democracy, Niccolò Machiavelli argued that free republics are the best form of state for imperial expansion. He suggested that the very institutions designed to protect domestic liberty—such as a representative senate and the popular veto—provide the resources and energy required for conquest. Expansion, for Machiavelli, was a "necessity" for republics to survive.Liberty facilitates imperial strength through several key mechanisms:* Secure Property: When citizens know their lives and goods are safe from arbitrary seizure, population and wealth grow rapidly.* Public Glory: Free citizens provide larger, motivated armies because they fight for a common good that they personally own.* Prevention of Decay: Machiavelli believed that "continued tranquillity would enervate" a republic, provoking internal dissensions that lead to ruin. #WaihigaKMuturi #LetsCreateAfrica #CreatorOfOpportunities #WaihigaIsImpact #TechDiplomacy #AfricanChangemakers #GlobalSouthLeaders #ImpactDrivenProfessionals #TechDiplomacy #AIForDevelopment #InclusiveInnovation #TacklingPovertyWithAI #FutureOfWorkInAfrica #MSMEEcosystems #DigitalRights #AIPolicy #DigitalTransformation #AfricaRisingTech #IndigenousInnovation #AIForGood #DataForDevelopment #GMelTech #YouthInTech #OpenStandards #RegionalInnovation
The ruthless logic of global power politics
2026/07/12
The realist orders a half-empty glass because the world is not built on trust; it is built on incentives. In this short breakdown, I walk through five lessons realism keeps forcing us to relearn: the security dilemma; the costs of moral crusades; why sovereignty still shapes Moscow’s instincts; how the Quad reflects balancing not friendship; and why Hobbes and Machiavelli still haunt modern statecraft. If you work in policy, tech diplomacy, or development, realism is not a mood; it is a discipline.#InternationalRelations #Geopolitics #Realism #SecurityStudies #Strategy #GlobalSouthLeaders #AfricanChangemakers #WaihigaKMuturi #LetsCreateAfrica #CreatorOfOpportunities #WaihigaIsImpact #TechDiplomacy
Nailing Jelly to the Wall: Why Strategic Analysts Get History Wrong
2026/07/04
In this episode, we tackle the "historical problem" in international relations and tech diplomacy. Why do so many strategic analysts get the past wrong? And how does that bad history lead to failed policies and wasted impact in the Global South today? Waihiga breaks down the Historical Integrity Protocol, explaining why we need to stop cherry-picking case studies to fit our narratives. We discuss the dangers of ignoring historical context, the illusion of perfect statistical models, and why every good analyst must be a guardian against state myths. Tune in to hear why getting history right is the very first step to building a better, more inclusive future. Why the AI economic speedometer stalls
2026/03/21
AI is everywhere in the conversation, but the economic speedometer isn’t moving the way the headlines suggest. Why? Because the value of AI is not determined by intelligence alone. It’s determined by integration. And integration is expensive, political, and slow. Stanford’s AI Index shows how quickly AI is diffusing and reshaping sectors, but it also highlights deep divides in who benefits and how prepared institutions are to absorb the change. That divide is the story. When leaders ask, “Why aren’t we seeing ROI yet?” The answer is often simple: they bought a tool, but they didn’t redesign the workflow. They ran pilots, but they didn’t build governance. They trained a model, but they didn’t solve the data plumbing. Real productivity gains come when AI moves from “assist” to "orchestrate", from discrete tasks to connected, end-to-end workflows. That is where the economic needle shifts, and it is also where risk multiplies. For Africa and LMICs, there’s an added layer: our economies are mobile-first. That creates a huge opportunity to deliver AI-enabled services through rails that already reach the majority. GSMA estimates mobile technologies and services contributed USD 220 billion to Africa’s economy in 2024, and this matters because AI’s broadest economic impact here will likely ride those same channels: payments, commerce, customer operations, agriculture, logistics, and public services. But the speedometer stalls when we ignore governance and trust. The IMF’s work on AI and jobs reminds us that exposure differs across economies, and the winners won’t just be the most "automated" but the most prepared to manage transitions fairly and capture productivity gains without importing harms. This episode is a practical, grounded look at what it takes to convert AI excitement into economic momentum. We’ll talk about the real constraints: data classification, security, sovereignty, incentives, and leadership decisions that hold under pressure. AI is bigger than we imagine. And it’s harder than we expect. The point is not to slow down. The point is to build in a way that actually moves the needle. If you’re building in Africa, the Global South, or any complex market, let’s talk. #WaihigaKMutri #LetsCreateAfrica #CreatorOfOpprtunities #TechPlomat #AILeadership #ChiefAIOfficer #AIGovernance #ResponsibleAI #TechDiplomacy #AIForDevelopment #AfricaTech #GlobalSouth #EmergingMarkets #FutureOfWork #DigitalTransformation #DataGovernance #DataSovereignty #HumanRights #InclusiveInnovation #MSMEs #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #PublicInterestTech #PolicyInnovation #CornellCAIO
Why the AI progress bar is stuck - Deep Dive
2026/03/21
We keep talking about AI like it’s a simple upgrade. New model, better prompts, bigger "wow". But after my first Cornell CAIO session on abundant intelligence, one uncomfortable truth became clearer: in most organisations, the AI progress bar is not stuck because the tools are weak. It’s stuck because the foundations are missing. AI is now capable enough to feel like magic. Yet the hard work is still stubbornly human: data classification, access controls, procurement, security, accountability, and the courage to say “not in production yet” even when the demo looks perfect. The World Bank’s recent work on AI foundations makes the point that progress depends on readiness, not hype. That resonates deeply in African and LMIC contexts, where the gap between “pilot” and “operational reality” can swallow budgets and reputations. And then there’s the shift many leaders are underestimating: we’re moving from automating tasks to automating workflows. Once AI enters workflows, it touches money, identity, customer trust, and compliance. That’s not an app decision. It’s an institutional decision. In Africa, the progress bar also sticks for a different reason: distribution is strong, but governance is uneven. Mobile is already a major economic rail on the continent, contributing USD 220 billion in 2024 (about 7.7% of GDP). So yes, we can deploy at scale. The question is whether we can deploy responsibly, with sovereignty, safety, and inclusion built in. In this episode, I’ll unpack the real blockers behind “stuck AI" and share a simple lens for leaders: capability is abundant, but readiness is scarce. If we want the progress bar to move, we stop chasing the next demo and start building the muscle that makes AI boring, reliable, and accountable. If your organisation is “AI curious” but progress feels slow, this conversation is for you. #WaihigaKMutri #LetsCreateAfrica #CreatorOfOpprtunities #TechPlomat #AILeadership #ChiefAIOfficer #AIGovernance #ResponsibleAI #TechDiplomacy #AIForDevelopment #AfricaTech #GlobalSouth #EmergingMarkets #FutureOfWork #DigitalTransformation #DataGovernance #DataSovereignty #HumanRights #InclusiveInnovation #MSMEs #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #PublicInterestTech #PolicyInnovation #CornellCAIO

Finding Light Through the Storm: How Lean Six Sigma Principles Transformed My 7-Month Job Search
2025/05/18
In the midst of 1,962 applications and countless rejections, I discovered something profound – the same DMAIC methodology that transforms When rejection emails outnumbered interview calls, I turned to process improvement rather than despair. My newly earned Yellow Belt isn't just a certificate on my wall – it's become my framework for navigating life's storms. The data tells a sobering story: 18,339 filtered jobs, 45 first rounds, 29 case studies, and zero offers... yet. But unlike before, each rejection has become data, not defeat. Each setback offers lessons to analyze, not reasons to surrender. Through this journey, I've witnessed how these principles are transforming businesses across Africa and MENA – from Sarah Odhiambo reducing waste by 23% in Nairobi to Joseph Mwangi cutting delivery times by 40% in Mombasa with simple process mapping. The storm hasn't passed, but I've learnt to navigate it better. Hope isn't just an emotion – it's a continuous improvement project with your own life as its focus. Read my full reflection on professional resilience through the lens of Lean Six Sigma. Let me hear your journey in the comments. Forging Africa's Digital Sovereignty: My Journey Through KeSIG 2025
2025/05/12
Is Africa building its digital future, or is it being built for us? That's the question that also resonated deeply during my recent immersion in the KeSIG 2025 Internet Governance course by KICTANet.   Navigating the complexities of the digital realm – from data sovereignty and AI ethics to infrastructure and policy – demands more than just technical know-how. It requires a profound understanding of governance, shaped by those who live the African reality.   The KeSIG journey, guided by exceptional African experts like Dr. Grace Githaiga, John Walubengo, CISA, CDPSE, (OGW)., June Okal, and many more, wasn't just about modules and lessons. It was a powerful affirmation of the expertise and conviction present right here on the continent. It underscored a critical truth: our digital destiny cannot be outsourced. We need to move beyond being mere participants in global conversations shaped elsewhere. We must become the architects, the policymakers, and the custodians of our digital landscape. This demands equipping ourselves with knowledge, challenging borrowed models, and actively building systems that serve our communities, reflect our values, and drive our prosperity.   Completing the KeSIG 2025 has reinforced my belief that capacity-building initiatives like this are not just beneficial; they are non-negotiable for a sovereign and thriving digital Africa.   Are you equipped to shape this future? Are you engaging in the vital conversations, and, more importantly, are you building? I've shared my reflections on this pivotal experience and a call to action for every African to lean into this crucial space. Let's seize control of our narrative and build the digital Africa we envision, together. #AfricaByAfricans #InternetGovernance#DigitalAfrica #DecolonisingTech #BuildBetter #AfricanInnovation #KeSIG #KICTANet#DigitalTransformation #AfricanLeadership #TechPolicy #DataProtection #AIethics   Subscribe 📝 Like 👍🏼 Share 🗣️   #WaihigaKMuturi #WaihigaIsImpact#CreatorOfOpportunities #SerialSocialEntrepreneur #DigitalStoryteller #SocialConnector#ProfessionalMediator #LetsCreateAfrica #JobsInAfrica #TheFutureOfWork #WorkInAfrica#IkoKaziKE #SOKO @letscreateafrica Subscribe 📝 Like 👍🏼 Share 🗣️
