This was the 7th year of celebration of exclusive awards for inmates and staff. There were 3 categories this year, namely Painting, Special Mention and Prison Administration. 7 inmates were chosen for awards in the Painting category while 2 were selected for their special contribution to prison life. 2 awards were given to prison staff. This year the theme for awards was Telephones in Jails. Awards this year were released by Shri Arvind Kumar (IPS), DG, Madhya Pradesh Prisons & Correctional Services and Dr. KLN Rao. ADG Prisons, Gujarat. Jury this year comprised Sudhir Yadav, IPS (Retd.) and former DG, Delhi Prisons, Arun Kumar Gupta, IPS (Retd.), former DG, West Bengal Prisons and Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder, Tinka Tinka Foundation. An elaborate award ceremony took place at Central Jail, Bhopal. Tinka Tinka India Awards and Tinka Tinka Bandini Awards are exclusive awards founded by India’s prison reformer Vartika Nanda.Conceived, scripted and narrated by prison reformer Dr. Vartika Nanda on an honorary basis, Tinka Tinka Jail Radio is the first and exclusive podcast series on prison reforms in India. Starting in 2020, these episodes have till now covered various shades and contours of life in Indian and international jails. From discussing the struggles of children who live in the prison with their incarcerated parent in the first episode, to detailing and sharing both emotional and successful stories of Tinka Jail Radio established in jails, these exclusive podcasts have come a long way in introducing the outside world to the jail environment. This is a sincere attempt to help in improving living conditions in jails. Vartika Nanda is also the storyteller and narrator of Kissa Khaki Ka, the podcast series of Delhi Police. Kissa Khaki Ka is the only podcast series run by any police department in India.

#vartikananda #jailradio #tinkatinkafoundation Satish and Arbaz- two inmates lodged in District Jail, Agra came together to paint the Tinka Jail Radio wall. Colors in their hands also made a substantial improvement in their mental health. One of them had tried committing suicide a few days back. While number of deaths in prisons has increased from 1,887 in 2020 to 2,116 in 2021, having increased by 12.1%., art and creativity in prisons can bring a huge change in the prison atmosphere. Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day: this special episode is dedicated to all prison officers, staff and inmates who are trying to recreate in prisons. Interestingly, this was the first jail radio started by Tinka Tinka Foundation. It moved further in other jails . Agra Jail Radio was part of a special action-oriented work that was evaluated as OUTSTADING by ICSSR. Thanks to Shri Anand Kumar, Shri Shashi Kant Mishra , Shri Sanjeev Kumar Singh, Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh, Shri K.P. Singh, Shri Jeevan Singh and Shri Harvansh Pandey for their constant support. Tinka Tinka Jail Radio are the only podcasts that are dedicated to voices of prisons in India. These are conceptualised, scripted and narrated by India's leading prison reformer Dr. Vartika Nanda.

Tinka Tinka India Awards entered into its 6th year of celebration of creativity in jails. The awards were released in District Jail, Faridabad this year. Dr. Vartika Nanda, prison reformer and media educatorhas conceptualised these exclusive awards for inmates and jail staff. Every year jail awards are dedicated to a specified topic concerning prisons. Vartika Nanda has also conceived jail radio in the prisons of Haryana and District Jail. Aug 12, 2022: Prison radio started at a usual time today, 7 am , but with unusual demands. More than 300 letters of requests were received today by inmates to listen to programmes, stories and songs of their choice. Interestingly, prison radio exceeded its time slot of 3 hours to 8 hours today, looking at the enthusiasm of inmates. They wanted to celebrate through the jail radio and wanted their family members too to listen to the few voices sitting at the other corner of the jail.   District Jail, Karnal in Haryana, which started its prison radio on 29 April, 2021, was a major hit today.   Ten inmates, including five women, have been trained as radio jockeys to run the daily programme. Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation, is the brain behind prison radios in the state of Haryana.  First jail radio of Haryana was inaugurated in District Jail, Panipat by Ranjit Singh (Jail Minister), Rajiv Arora IAS, Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Jail) and K. Selvaraj, (IPS), DG Prisons, Haryana in January 2021.

Conference, organised by the Prison Radio Association in collaboration with the Directorate of Norwegian Correctional Services, was a historic event bringing together participants from over 20 countries. It was aimed at facilitating global knowledge and experience-sharing on the potential of jail radio in humanizing prisons and rehabilitating inmates.   Story of Prison Radio in India   Vartika Nanda's 30-minute exhaustive presentation included an overview of prison radio in India and details of prison radio initiatives implemented by her non-profit organisation, Tinka Tinka Foundation, in District Jails of Agra and Dehradun as well as 8 jails of Haryana.  This episode sheds light on the living conditions in Oslo Jail and the issue of isolation.  This is more pertinent in the light of the research project completed by Vartika Nanda on the living conditions of women inmates and their children in jails and their communication needs with reference to Uttar Pradesh. This project is evaluated as OUTSTANDING by ICSSR.

Sylvaraj. Vartika Nanda is a prison reformer using the best practices of journalism and academia for prison reforms. She is the founder of Tinka Tinka Foundation, which works for improving prison life, including the introduction of prison radio in District Jail, Agra and the jails of Haryana. She has authored three books on prisons. Her Tinka Tinka Jail Radio Podcasts are exclusive podcasts dedicated to Indian prisons. President of India conferred the Stree Shakti Puraskar on her in 2014 for her contribution to women empowerment through media and literature. #vartikananda #tinkajailradio #gangubaikathiawadi  गंगुबाई काठियावाड़ी मुंबई के रेड लाइट एरिया में काम करने वाली गंगुबाई पर संजय लीला भंसाली की फिल्म है। इस फिल्म को देखते हुए मैं जीबी रोड की उन गलियों की तरफ बरबस खींची चली गई जिन्हें मैंने 1998 के आसपास बहुत करीब से देखा था। एक दिन मैं और दिल्ली पुलिस की एक महिला अधिकारी रिक्शे में वहां पर गए थे। हम दोनों ने तकरीबन पूरा दिन जीबी रोड में गुजारा था। दूसरी बार मैं टेलीविजन की एक कैमरा टीम के साथ वहां गई थी। उसके बाद मैंने इसी टीवी चैनल के दफ्तर में रहते हुए कई महीनों तक एक उपन्यास को लिखा जो काफी हद तक पूरा हो गया था लेकिन उसे कुछ वजहों से मैंने वहीं रोक दिया लेकिन जीबी रोड की वो तंग गलियां मेरे दिमाग पर हावी रहीं। बाद में भी अपराध बीट की प्रमुख के तौर पर स्याह-सफेद कई पगडॉडियां दिखती रहीं। अपराध पर ही पीएचडी करने और फिर जेलों पर उपजे- तिनका तिनका- में जीबी रोड के अंश बने रहे। कई ऐसी महिलाएं भी मेरे संपर्क में रहीं जो जेल से छूटने के बाद इन कोठों पर पहुंच गईं क्योंकि समाज ने उन्हें स्वीकार नहीं किया था। वे एक जेल से निकलीं और दूसरी जेल में पहुंच गईं। बहुत ही कम लोगों को इस बात का अहसास था कि जेल पर मेरे काम को एक बड़ा हिस्सा जीबी रोड को देखने और महसूस करने के उस अनुभव से निकला था।

तिनका जेल रेडियो: कुरुक्षेत्र की जेल में नवरात्र की पूजा   Conceptualised and narrated by prison reformer Vartika Nanda, this episode of Tinka Tinka Jail Radio brings forth the celebration of Ram Navami in an Indian Jail.   15 बंदी एक कमरे में जमा हुए और उन्होंने नवरात्र के नौवें दिन भजनों और माता की चौकी के जरिए ईश्वर को याद किया। गूंज ऐसी थी कि जेल में बंद बाकी बंदी भी इन्हें बार-बार सुनने की फरमाइश करने लगे। यह तिनका जेल रेडियो की सफलता का एक बड़ा पैमाना है कि जेल का रेडियो अब बंदियों के बीच धार्मिकता और बेहतर इंसान बनने की अलख जगाने लगा है।  The mission to bring jail radio to Haryana's jails commenced in the year 2020. The first jail radio was established in Panipat in 2021. For the last few months, the work of bringing jail radio to Kurukshetra Jail has also begun for which 10 men and 2 women inmates have been selected as radio jockeys.  Over the past one year, at least 70 talented and well-deserving inmates have been trained in Haryana under Dr. Vartika Nanda, Founder, Tinka Tinka Foundation and the force behind jail radio in Haryana.   First jail radio in Haryana was launched by Ranjit Singh, Jail Minister, Government of Haryana, Rajeev Arora, IAS, ACS Home and K. Selvaraj, IPS, Director General of Prisons. Prison Radio is further extending with the support of  Mohammad Akil, IPS, DG, Prisons, Haryana,. Conceptualised by Vartika Nanda, Tinka Tinka Foundation and its radio series in jails have left an indelible mark in the lives of inmates.    Based on the well-acclaimed Tinka Model of Prison Reforms, the jail radio  movement has helped inmates receive happiness and positivity in their day-to-day life while also imparting crucial life lessons and constructive skills like writing and composing rhythmic songs, and managing the radio stations as technicians, composers and musicians.   Tinka Tinka is a movement that is touching lives of inmates. Tinka Tinka is also credited for establishing exclusive awards for inmates and jail staff- Tinka Tinka India Awards and Tinka Tinka Bandini Awards.
