LEE WOODMAN ON POETRY, PERFORMANCE, SOUND AND THE LANDSCAPES OF THE HEART
2026/10/01
Noshing With Lee Woodman – October 1, 2026 Author, Heartscapes Award-winning poet Lee Woodman joins Ira for a wide-ranging conversation about the power of poetry — and why poetry is far more than words on a page. The author of Heartscapes (published by Shanti Arts Publishing and the seventh book in her acclaimed “Scapes” series), Lee talks about the growing connection between poetry, rap and hip-hop, and why she believes today’s performers can be remarkably sophisticated with language and lyrics. Watch Full Podcast Video Lee explains why performing poetry can create a different experience than simply reading it, the phenomenon of the crowd, and her lifelong fascination with sound and what she calls “tongue language.” She also gets into the technical side of poetry — rhythm, language, sound and structure — and even discusses the influence of performers such as LL Cool J. Her own story is equally fascinating. Lee grew up in France and India before moving to the United States at 14. She discusses why she considers herself a “global citizen,” her work at the Smithsonian and Library of Congress, and the transition from nearly 50 years in Washington to becoming a full-time poet. Lee also explains how her “Scapes” series began, reads a moving poem about her mother, and explores the themes at the heart of Heartscapes: love, family, nature, loss, renewal and the unexpected moments that give life meaning. It’s a conversation about where poetry is going, where it comes from — and why it continues to make us think. Lee Woodman, author of the “Scapes” poetry series, is winner of the 2026 Indie Reader Gold Discovery Award, the 2025 Independent Press Gold Award for Poetry, the 2025 Nautilus Gold Award for Poetry, and the 2020 William Meredith Prize. Her six published collections include Heartscapes, Colorscapes, Soulscapes, Artscapes, Lifescapes, Mindscapes, and Homescapes. All these books that treat inner and outer landscapes—literal, emotional, cultural, spiritual. Her essays and poems have been published in Poet Lore, Tiferet Journal, Zócalo Public Square, Grey Sparrow Press, The Ekphrastic Review, vox poetica, The New Guard Review, The Concord Monitor, The Hill Rag, Naugatuck River Review, Tulip Tree Publishing, and The Broadkill Review. Lee has been profiled on the following radio shows and podcasts: KJAG-FM, WSIU-FM, KMA, KORE-AM, Goodnews Broadcasting, Ron Van Dam, KLTF, WAMV-AM, WMST-AM, Steve Maggi, Cyrus Webb, Cover to Cover Book Beat, with RodgerNichols, Grace Cavalieri’s “Poet and the Poem” at the Library of Congress, “The Packaged Tourist Show” at The National Archives with Andrew Dibiase, “The Authors Show” with Don McCauley, and “Gab Talks” with Gabby Olczak. She believes poetry is a reflection of all creative expression: dance, music, drama, visual arts, and language. WHAT IF AMERICA HAD BEEN EVEN BIGGER?
2026/09/24
Noshing With Mark Kawar – September 24, 2026 Author, America, but Bigger: Near-Annexations, from Greenland to the Galapagos What if Greenland, Mexico, the Galápagos Islands — or even parts of Indonesia, Syria, or Russia — had become part of the United States? Those may sound like alternate-history fantasies, but according to Mark Kawar, they were real possibilities at various points in American history. Watch Full Podcast Video In this episode of “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Mark, author of America, but Bigger: Near-Annexations, from Greenland to the Galapagos, talks about the fascinating history of America’s attempts, interests and ambitions to expand its territory. Mark explains why he began writing the book in 2019, why Greenland provides such a timely bookend to the story, and how America has continued to expand its influence without necessarily adding new territory. We talk about the difference between annexation and influence, the surprising story of Rio Rico, tiny potential acquisitions in the Caribbean, the United States’ interest in the Galápagos Islands, and the concept of Manifest Destiny in the 21st century. We also explore countries and territories that at various points might have preferred U.S. annexation or statehood, the unique position of the Marshall Islands, and what American history might look like if some of those possibilities had actually happened. Would the United States have looked very different if Greenland — or all of Mexico — had become part of America? Mark Kawar takes us on a fascinating journey through the history of near-annexations, American expansion, territorial ambitions and global influence. (Also Watch Full Podcast Video) ABOUT MARK: Mark Kawar is the author of America, but Bigger, a narrative history of the many times the United States could have expanded beyond its current borders. The book examines failed attempts to annex places from Canada, to Cuba, to Greenland, and beyond, and what those moments reveal about how Americans once debated power, borders, and empire. His writing has appeared in The New Republic, American Heritage, Law & Liberty, and The Hill. He lives in Falls Church, Virginia. Jane Fonda: Activism, Controversy and the Woman Behind ‘Hanoi Jane’
2026/09/17
Noshing With Marilyn S. Greenwald – September 17, 2026 Author, Jane Fonda: There’s a Great Deal to Say What happens when an acclaimed actress becomes one of America’s most controversial activists? This week on “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” I talk with Marilyn S. Greenwald, author of Jane Fonda: There’s a Great Deal to Say (published by Rutgers University Press) about the complicated, fascinating and often misunderstood life of Jane Fonda. Watch Full Podcast Video Marilyn takes us behind the scenes of her research, including her journey to Fonda’s personal papers at Smith College, where a significant portion of the archive includes her FBI file. Interestingly, Marilyn initially had no intention of writing another Jane Fonda biography. We talk about the origins of the “Hanoi Jane” label, Fonda’s activism and why that controversy has remained part of her public identity for decades. Marilyn explains how activism became such a central part of Fonda’s life—what she describes as roughly 95% of her life—and how Fonda’s experiences in France, the cultural “new wave,” her marriage to Roger Vadim, and her return to the United States helped shape her activism. We also explore Fonda’s marriage to activist Tom Hayden and what she learned from him about being strategic; celebrity activists; the balancing act between Hollywood and political activism; and Fonda’s trip to North Vietnam. Marilyn discusses Fonda’s continuing regret about posing with an anti-aircraft gun, while noting that Fonda has said she does not regret going to North Vietnam. And there are some surprises. Marilyn shares what she discovered about Fonda’s relationship with veterans and the letters she received, along with an important detail about Fonda’s memoir: she really did write it herself, without a ghostwriter, and personally fact-checked it. It’s a conversation about celebrity, activism, Vietnam, controversy, personal history and the woman behind one of the most recognizable names in American culture. ABOUT MARILYN: Marilyn Greenwald is a professor emerita of journalism at Ohio University and the author of five biographies, including those of Leslie McFarlane, the first author of the Hardy Boys series of books;  of social justice activist Eunice Hunton Carter; and of New York Times columnist Charlotte Curtis, “A Woman of the Times: Journalism, Feminism and the Career of Charlotte Curtis,” which was named a Notable Book of the New York Times.  Marilyn Greenwald     Website Marilyn Greenwald     Facebook Marilyn Greenwald     LinkedIn
‘A REPUBLIC, IF WE CAN KEEP IT’: JOHN BARRY ON POWER AND CONSTITUTIONAL RESTRAINT
2026/09/10
Noshing With John Barry – September 10, 2026 Author, Power & Peril: Writings about the Fate of the American Republic How do we balance strong leadership with constitutional restraint—and what happens when that balance begins to shift? Watch Full Podcast Video This week on “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” I talk with John Barry, author of Power & Peril: Writings about the Fate of the American Republic, about one of the most enduring challenges facing American democracy: power is always going to be there, but so is the peril when that power isn’t properly restrained. John explains why he wrote Power & Peril and draws on history, national security, leadership and the American political experience to examine what happens when the boundaries of power are tested. We discuss lessons for today’s leaders, why we need to learn from history, and the importance of putting pressure on allies without belittling them. John points to Desert Storm as a model for working with allies, including the importance of maintaining strong relationships within alliances such as NATO. We also revisit Benjamin Franklin’s famous response when asked after the Constitutional Convention whether the new nation had a monarchy or a republic: “A republic, if you can keep it.” For John, the Constitution is essentially a “document of caution”—a framework designed to recognize the presence of power while placing limits on how that power can be exercised. We explore whether America is currently testing those constitutional boundaries, the challenges posed by increasingly autocratic regimes, and why curiosity and an informed citizenry matter. John also discusses what he calls “normalizing deviance”—the danger of gradually accepting behavior that once would have seemed unacceptable. It’s a wide-ranging conversation about American history, constitutional government, leadership, national security, alliances and the future of the American republic. ABOUT JOHN: John L. Barry, Maj. Gen., USAF (Ret.) served more than 30 years in the United States Air Force, rising to the rank of Major General. A fighter pilot, combat veteran, and graduate of the USAF Fighter Weapons School, he held senior leadership positions during some of the most consequential moments of our time, including Desert Storm, the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the strategic transformation of the U.S. military after the Cold War. While serving as the Air Force’s lead strategic planner in the Pentagon, he survived the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He later concluded his military career as Board Member and Executive Director of the Columbia Space Shuttle Accident Investigation following the tragic loss of Columbia in 2003. After retiring from military service, Barry turned his focus to public leadership and institutional reform. As Superintendent of Aurora Public Schools in Colorado, he led a district of 40,000 students and 60 schools through significant transformation, pioneering one of the nation’s early concurrent enrollment programs linking high school students to college credit and workforce pathways. He later served as President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver and then as President and CEO of Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, where the institution gained national and international recognition as one of America’s leading aerospace museums. Today, John serves as Chair of the Air Force Historical Foundation and Vice Chair of the National Aviation Hall of Fame, continuing his lifelong commitment to preserving the lessons of history and connecting them to the challenges of the present. A 1973 Honor Graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, John also holds a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Oklahoma. He served as a White House Fellow at NASA during the Challenger era and later studied national security leadership at Harvard Kennedy School. His honors include Colorado Superintendent of the Year, induction into the Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame and the Colorado Titan 100 CEOs Hall of Fame, the White House Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, and the FAA Master Pilot Award.  John Barry      Website John Barry      LinkedIn John Barry      Substack Watch the full Podcast Video iframe class="video" src=" https://www.youtube.com/embed/ldzk972lbdw?si=i0AnhDvXxPDaVUUD" title="YouTube video player" title="YouTube video player
CAN AI MAKE YOU SMARTER? CHARLES B. KREITZBERG EXPLORES THE HUMAN SIDE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
2026/09/03
Noshing With Charles B. Kreitzberg  – September 3, 2026 Author, AI Can Make You Smarter: Practical Skills. Sharper Thinking. Business Value. Can AI Make You Smarter? Charles B. Kreitzberg Explores the Human Side of Artificial Intelligence This week on “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Charles B. Kreitzberg, author of AI Can Make You Smarter: Practical Skills. Sharper Thinking. Business Value., talks about one of the most important questions of our time: How can we use artificial intelligence without allowing it to do our thinking for us? Watch Full Podcast Video Charlie discusses the importance of AI literacy, why we don’t want to lose our agency, and why AI should never be treated as an unquestioned source of truth. AI can make mistakes—and learning how to work with it effectively means learning how to talk with it, challenge it, ask it better questions, and even have it ask questions of us. We explore just how enormous the AI revolution may be, why Charlie decided to write AI Can Make You Smarter: Practical Skills. Sharper Thinking. Business Value. and how an unexpected introduction to AI from his nephew helped inspire his journey. Charlie explains why AI is not human, yet says it could potentially become “the best mentor we ever had.” But where is the balance? Can AI truly make us smarter—or are we in danger of outsourcing our brains? We also talk about the importance of human connection, why “we need people—we’re social animals,” the dangers posed by bad actors, concerns about privacy, and why ordinary people—not just technology companies—need to be involved in the conversation about the future of AI. Charlie also shares how he first became interested in computers after literally locking himself out of his room at Dartmouth, and offers practical advice on getting better results from AI. From his SLATE approach to prompting to the reminder that “vague prompts give you vague answers,” Charlie explains why the first answer AI gives you doesn’t have to be the last answer. And perhaps most importantly, we discuss the illusion of understanding—and why thinking critically remains essential in an increasingly AI-powered world. This isn’t about becoming a faster “prompt-jockey.” It’s about learning how to use tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot to strengthen the uniquely human skills that continue to matter most: clear thinking, better decision-making, stronger communication, creativity, and real collaboration. Can artificial intelligence become one of our greatest tools without replacing the thinking that makes us human? ABOUT CHARLIE: Charles B. Kreitzberg is a cognitive psychologist, technologist, author, musician, and user experience designer. He has worked with computers since the 1960s and has spent his career helping people understand and use complex technology. In 1982, he founded Cognetics Corporation, an award-winning user experience design and consulting firm. He later served as Senior UX Advisor at Princeton University. His new book, AI Can Make You Smarter: Practical Skills. Sharper Thinking. Business Value., shows professionals how to use AI to strengthen thinking, learning, communication, judgment, and performance.  Charles B. Kreitzberg             Website Charles B. Noshing With Terry Chester Shulman – August 27, 2026 Author, Barrymore: The Spectacular, Tumultuous Life of America’s Prince of Players The Barrymore name is synonymous with Hollywood royalty—but long before Drew Barrymore became a household name, there was John Barrymore, one of the most brilliant and complicated actors in American theater and film history. In this episode of “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” I talk with Terry Chester Shulman, author of the acclaimed John Barrymore biography, Barrymore: The Spectacular, Tumultuous Life of America’s Prince of Players published by the University Press of Kentucky). Watch Full Podcast Video Terry Chester Shulman discusses his John Barrymore biography, Barrymore: The Spectacular, Tumultuous Life of America’s Prince of Players, on Ira’s Everything Bagel. Terry spent six years researching and writing his biography, digging beyond the familiar stories of Barrymore’s fame, marriages, alcoholism and personal demons to reveal the remarkable artist underneath the notoriety. He even had the opportunity to interview Barrymore’s daughter, Dee Dee Barrymore. We talk about Terry’s lifelong fascination with Barrymore, beginning with his childhood love of the 1920 film Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Barrymore’s legendary theatrical family—including siblings Lionel and Ethel—and his groundbreaking approach to acting. Barrymore helped reintroduce Shakespeare to 20th-century audiences with his celebrated performance as Richard III, pioneered a deeply personal approach to acting, and successfully transitioned from Broadway to Hollywood. He made six films in 1932 alone, yet never regarded movies as more important than the stage when it came to his artistic legacy. Terry also reveals the fascinating story behind Barrymore’s decision to enter motion pictures, the astonishing salaries he commanded, his rivalry with Lionel and Ethel, his relationship with Katharine Hepburn, and why Terry believes Barrymore was essentially destined to succeed in the sound era. Most importantly, Terry explains the central purpose of his book: to bring John Barrymore out from behind the cloud of notoriety and allow audiences to see the extraordinary actor who was hidden beneath the legend. It’s a fascinating conversation about John Barrymore, Hollywood history, Broadway, Shakespeare, acting, celebrity, family rivalry and the complicated price of fame. BEYOND 100%: NIR PELED ON REBUILDING LIFE AFTER A DEVASTATING STROKE
2026/08/20
Noshing With Nir Peled – August 20, 2026 Author, Beyond 100%: Rebuilding Life After It Breaks This week on “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Nir Peled, author of Beyond 100%: Rebuilding Life After It Breaks, talks about an extraordinary journey that began with a moment that changed everything. At 49, Nir was a successful Fortune 500 technology executive and former officer in an elite division of the IDF when he suddenly collapsed on the floor of his home office from a stroke. In an instant, he lost his speech, mobility and, in many ways, his sense of identity. What followed was a grueling journey of rehabilitation—and ultimately, a profound process of rebuilding his body, mind, cognitive abilities and spirit. Nir shares the seven rules for rehabilitation that helped guide his recovery, including one that might surprise you: humor. He explains the importance of his 1% rule, why recovery is a marathon rather than a sprint, and how that simple philosophy helped him through some of his darkest moments. We also talk about why Nir dedicated Beyond 100% to his grandmother, whom he calls “the ultimate survivor,” and how a personal recovery journal eventually became a book after his speech therapist encouraged him to tell the story from the patient’s perspective. Nir opens up about the caregiver journey, the reality of pain, his spiritual practices, the challenge of surrendering control, and what he calls one of the most important transformations in recovery: turning “Why me?” into “What now?” It’s a deeply personal conversation about resilience, identity, recovery and discovering what is possible when life suddenly forces you to start over. ABOUT NIR: Nir Peled has survived seven catastrophic events: a bombing, anaphylaxis, a tsunami, a violent kidnapping and robbery in the Amazon, cancer, a motorcycle accident, and a stroke. Across those experiences, he developed Beyond 100%, a practitioner-built system designed not to restore what was lost, but to build something stronger in its place. Unable to speak or move after his stroke, his framework is used by individuals and organizations navigating disruption, crisis, and high-stakes change. Nir Peled Website

Dave shares how the COVID pandemic unexpectedly led him into the world of children’s music, why writing for young audiences became more creatively fulfilling than composing for adults, and how embracing his own “inner weirdness” unlocked an entirely new artistic path. The conversation explores the remarkable differences between the minds of children and adults, the lasting influence of Mr. Rogers, the origins of his band Paper Mice, and why humor—especially dad jokes—became such an important part of both his music and his identity. Dave also offers thoughtful insights into one of today’s hottest topics: artificial intelligence and creativity. He explains why he believes art should always remain a deeply human conversation—one person connecting authentically with another. Whether you’re a parent, educator, musician, or simply someone who believes creativity should never lose its sense of play, this entertaining and thought-provoking conversation reminds us that sometimes the best way to connect with the world is to embrace your wonderfully weird side. If you’ve ever wondered what inspires truly original artists—or why embracing your inner child may be the secret to great creativity—you won’t want to miss this conversation. ABOUT DAVE: Dave Reminick, who lives with his family in Oak Park, Illinois, grew up in East Northport, Long Island. After high school, he attended Oberlin College and Conservatory, earning two degrees: a BA in Psychology and a BM in Saxophone Performance. Dave then earned two concurrent Masters degrees at the University of Michigan: an MA in Music Theory and an MM in Saxophone Performance. Finally, he pursued doctoral studies at Northwestern University, where he earned a DMA in Composition. Dave spent nearly 20 years teaching university-level music theory, composition, and saxophone while also composing and performing professionally as a saxophonist. He has also spent nearly 20 years as singer/guitarist/co-songwriter for the Chicago post-punk band Paper Mice. New Music Box called his adult compositions “bracing, original, and often jaw-dropping.” David Reminick          Website Watch the full Podcast Video iframe class="video" src=" https://www.youtube.com/embed/SbLb3OlYDo0?"YouTube video player

Noshing With Dr. Peter Grinspoon  Author, Aging Well with Cannabis: Feel Better, Sleep Better, and Live Better with Marijuana and CBD Can cannabis help people age better? What are the real benefits—and the real risks? And why do so many misconceptions about marijuana still persist? Watch Full Podcast Video This week on “Ira’s Everything Bagel,” Ira sits down with Dr. Peter Grinspoon, physician, educator, and author of Aging Well with Cannabis: Feel Better, Sleep Better, and Live Better with Marijuana and CBD. As the son of legendary cannabis advocate Dr. Lester Grinspoon, Peter grew up with a unique perspective on one of the most controversial and misunderstood substances in modern medicine. During this fascinating conversation, Dr. Grinspoon discusses his father’s influential role in the cannabis legalization movement, the myths and misinformation that continue to cloud public understanding, and why he believes education—not ideology—is the key to making informed decisions about cannabis use. Peter explains why he rarely recommends smoking cannabis, favoring edibles and tinctures instead, and explores the often-blurred line between recreational and medical marijuana. He also discusses why many physicians still lack adequate training in medical cannabis, despite growing patient interest and expanding research. The conversation delves into cannabis’s potential benefits for older adults, including pain management, improved sleep, reduced isolation, and enhanced quality of life. Peter addresses concerns about cognitive effects, addiction, and safety, offering a balanced, evidence-based perspective that neither exaggerates the benefits nor ignores the risks. Ira and Peter also explore the history of cannabis prohibition, the role of addiction psychiatry, the growing body of neutral scientific research, and why many oncologists now support cannabis use as a complementary option for patients undergoing cancer treatment. Whether you’re curious about CBD, considering medical cannabis, caring for an aging loved one, or simply interested in the evolving science behind marijuana, this episode provides thoughtful insights from one of the field’s most respected voices.
