The following Pause for Parenting programme looks at the work of the Substance Abuse Foundation in recognition of Drug Awareness Month. The theme for the month is Strengthening Prevention.Two members of staff of the foundation, Nicollette Williams who is a creative Arts Psychotherapist/ Addiction Counsellor/ Child and Adolescent Mental Health Therapist and Jomonica Beckles the House Administrator at Marina House and Senior Social Worker at both Verdum and Marina House share about the work of the foundation. They also explained why the theme was chosen and gave an overview of the current situation as it relates to Drug Abuse in Barbados. They also dispel the believe that Drug abuse automatically leads violence and the role of parents in preventing substance abuse.

The following Pause for Parenting programme examine the Positive and Negative expressions of Parental love with  Parenting Consultant Donna Tull Cox. Mrs Tull Cox explains the importance of examining the relationship when one is thinking of becoming a parent and also the need to review the way you were raised and make some decisions as to how you are going to raise your child.

The following Pause for Parenting programmme is produced in collaboration with the Heart and Stroke Foundation Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition. This week’s programme examines the benefits and the myths surrounding breastfeeding.  Dr. Alison Bernard a pediatrician and cofounder of the Breastfeeding and the  Child Nutrition foundation also explains that while breastfeeding  can be hard the benefits outweigh the difficulties.

The following Pause for Parenting  programme  features an interview with  former Member  of Parliment  for the St. James North constituency, Mr Edmund Hinkson as he shares his journety through fatheghood- real moments, lessons learned, and growth along the way. Tune to reflect, connect and be inspired.

The following Pause for Parenting programmes part 1 looks at the involvement of young men  in criminal activity. During the discussion the participants also examine some of the  reasons young men and women become involve  in crime.  It also looked at role of parents in steering their children away from crime and offers advice for parents in how they should speak to their children and interact with them. The discussion was lead by George Greaves a Marriage and family Counselor and Donna Tull Cox a parenting consultant and guidance counselor.

The following Pause for Parenting programme looks at the at Forgiveness for Ourselves  and Our Children with Melena  Simmons.  Melena who is Motivational Speaker  and an Emotional Intelligence facilitator explains the importance of forgiveness in families starting with forgiveness of self, children and other family members. Once practice,  forgiveness creates  peace and harmony in the family. She explains that while it’s not easy it’s essential for families to practice.

The following Pause for Parenting programme looks at the Court Process. This programme which is final prog in the first series produced in collaboration  with the Barbados Bar Association examines how one should first try to deal  with issues before approaching the Court for a solution. It also looks at difference between the Magistrate Court  and the High Court. It  and Court Etiquette. Sumaya Desai an Attorney at Law representing the Bat Association provides the answers to these questions and more.

The following Pause for Parenting programme looks at Why Environment matters in relation to the fight against Obesity. This programme which is produced in collaboration the Childhood Obesity Prevention Coalition features Dr. Kia Lewis who explains why the environment matters and why what children see and hear in school and home and in society in general can affect what they desire and  consume . Dr Lewis shares tips for parents  to use to in the home to help in the  fight against obesity.

The theme “Strengthening a Prevention “ and it’s importance in the fight against drug addiction was examined by Nicolette Williams who works at the Substance Abuse foundation as a Creative Arts Psychotherapist/Addition Counselor and child & Adolescent Mental Health therapist.Ms Williams shared that the status of substance abuse in Barbados should be a cause of concern for everyone, she highlighted the role of parents and adults  to protect their children and do all in their power not to expose or encourage them to use illegal drugs.
