What College Coaches Are Really Looking For | Kentucky Wesleyan’s Bryce Stuteville
2026/09/30
What does it really take to get recruited—and then develop into a player who can make an impact at the college level?
On this episode of the K-Zone Podcast, Jimi Keating and Hunter Wood sit down with Kentucky Wesleyan assistant coach Bryce Stuteville for an inside look at recruiting, pitching development, college baseball culture, and what coaches are actually looking for in prospective players.
Studeville’s baseball journey took him from South Spencer High School, where he was part of a state championship team, to Frontier Community College and the University of Southern Indiana before playing professionally with the Evansville Otters. He later transitioned into coaching at USI and now works with the pitching staff and handles a major part of the recruiting process at Kentucky Wesleyan.
Bryce explains why academics and character are among the first things he evaluates, what catches his attention when watching a player, and why a prospect doesn’t have to be a finished product to become someone he wants to recruit. The guys also discuss velocity, command, pitch characteristics, analytics, the transfer portal, roster construction, and the realities players face when trying to find the right level of college baseball.
They also dive into Kentucky Wesleyan’s approach to player development and the culture behind a program coming off a conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.
For young players and families navigating the recruiting process, this episode provides a valuable perspective directly from the other side of the conversation: a college coach who is actively evaluating, recruiting, and developing players.
If you want to play college baseball, this is an episode worth hearing.
