Tamu Thomas | Harnessing the power of self-care, joy and pleasure to redefine work-life harmony
2024/02/20
In this episode, I share an everyday burnout conversation with Tamu Thomas. Tamu Thomas is a transformational life coach and former social worker, specialising in helping women achieve work-life harmony by aligning with their nervous system for holistic well-being. With her social work background, Tamu deeply understands the systemic issues that contribute to workplace stress and the unequal distribution of emotional labour. Recognised as a thought leader, Tamu has been featured in many notable publications. Her unique approach, rooted in somatic coaching and Polyvagal informed practice, empowers women to reconnect with their core selves, establish healthy boundaries, and build self-trust. Her work is particularly resonant in addressing the unique challenges faced by women of the global majority under what she describes as, "the trinity of oppression” - patriarchy, white supremacy and capitalism. Her insights are essential for anyone seeking fulfilment, meaningful connection and joy in today's fast-paced world. Her new book, "Women Who Work Too Much: Break Free from Toxic Productivity and Find Your Joy," offers groundbreaking insights to help women liberate themselves from the systemic pressures that create an environment where women over-function to survive workplace stress and the unequal burden of emotional and domestic responsibilities. As we navigate the complexities of self-care and boundary-setting, Tamu and I discuss the art of saying 'no' and the sheer radicalness of putting oneself first without the guilt. This episode peels back the layers of the 'trinity of oppression' that women of the global majority endure, and we explore how redefining kindness with limits can lead to a healthier, more joyous existence. Tamu's upcoming book promises to be a manifesto for those ready to break free from the shackles of toxic productivity, and our conversation is punctuated with the kind of energy that can only come from passionate women focused on inciting change and championing empowerment. By the end of our discussion, we've journeyed through the landscapes of pleasure and personal growth, understanding that our power lies not only in our ability to survive but to thrive. We explore the collective might in community and the importance of supporting one another through shared narratives and experiences. Each story we share is a beacon, guiding others through the turbulence of life towards the calm shores of self-compassion and gratitude. Join us as Tamu Thomas and I invite you to reshape your narrative, find your balance, and discover the pleasure in every choice you make. Cath Counihan | Unraveling the ties between childhood trauma and adult perfectionism
2024/02/06
In this episode, I share an everyday burnout conversation with Cath Counihan. Cath Counihan, an integrative trauma psychotherapist, joins me to shine a light on burnout, tracing its roots from childhood experiences to our relentless pursuit of perfection as adults. My heart-to-heart with Cath examines the physiological shackles we unknowingly place on our nervous systems, and how to embrace the mantra of 'good enough' to find peace amidst the chaos. Feeling disconnected from your inner self can sometimes be like wandering through a fog—knowing there's solid ground somewhere, but unable to find it. This episode weaves together the tales of how unaddressed trauma and societal pressures can lead to that sense of disorientation, and the importance of realigning with our core through practices of self-care. Cath offers the tools and insights necessary to bridge the gap between the mind and body, advocating for the power of body-based therapies and intentional choices towards a more fulfilling existence. We open up about parenting, working, and the pursuit of joy, acknowledging that the extraordinary often lies in the everyday simplicity we overlook. As we wrap up our conversation, Cath leaves us with an invitation to continue the discussion on burnout, reassuring listeners that every step taken towards balance is a victory in itself.  Join us on this journey of reflection, and perhaps, you'll find the keys to unlocking a more compassionate, balanced life right here. More about Cath Counihan: Catherine Counihan is an Integrative Trauma Psychotherapist working in private practice in London.  She specialises in complex trauma, perfectionism, shame, nervous system healing, shifting dysfunctional patterns in our families and lives and reparenting.  Cath hosts a popular weekly mental podcast 'Grow Yourself Up' focused on how we can learn to tend to ourselves in adulthood when we have not had our needs met as children, and the challenges of doing this as we parent.  She writes via her Substack: Nurture.Heal.Grow. She is accredited by the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and has 12 years of clinical experience. Cath had a previous career in financial services and is the mother of 7 year old twin girls. 2023/11/28
In this episode, I share an everyday burnout conversation with Casey Stevens. Casey is a spiritual psychotherapist with over a decade of clinical practice as a Licensed Psychotherapist, a Master Certified Coach and a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist. Clinically trained and mystically guided, Casey blends Clinical Psychology, Consciousness Coaching and Ancient Energy Practices to help her clients achieve the deepest level of healing.  It was through heartbreak, loss and trauma that Casey experienced her burnout by abandoning her own needs and wellbeing to care for someone close to her. This inevitably led Casey to embark on her healing and spiritual journey, helping her discover her wholeness, truth, and dharma purpose work.  This episode covers:  How a spiritual awakening journey often starts when life begins to fall apart and we're no longer aware of who we are. How Casey became depleted and burnt out when over-focused on her spouse's wellbeing, shining a light on her identity as the 'wounded healer'. The empowering moment Casey realized she needed to separate from her husband and create change for a new chapter in her life. How Casey found her authentic self again by tuning into her unique gift of working by combining both traditional healing psychological and ancient energetic modalities. How Casey 'tracks the energy' to help her clients tune into their scared inner wisdom and navigate healing on a deeper level. Why when we're in alignment with our inner knowledge, we're gifted peace even if we face challenges ahead of us. How to listen and tune into your own intuition.  To learn more about Casey's work: Find out more on how to work with Casey Follow her on Instagram Please note, this podcast is not intended as medical advice. Flic | The anchoring question we need to ask ourselves right now
2023/11/09
In this solo session episode, I talk about how important it is to meet ourselves where we're at during these unsettling times and do whatever we can to better look after our health and wellbeing in this present moment. When we sit and take stock, the world has experienced and changed a lot these past few years, so it's only natural for many of us to feel discombobulated and like we're standing on unstable ground. So, how do we tune into our own selves? In this episode, I share the anchoring question that can help you centre back to yourself and begin to better meet your needs. I also share these beautiful words that struck a chord with me this week. Body is purified by water.   Ego is purified by tears.  Intellect is purified by knowledge. And the soul is purified by love.  - Iman Ali   Please note, this podcast is not intended as medical advice. In this bite-sized solo session, I talk about how focusing and living in the present moment can help us prevent and tackle our burnout.  I discuss how dwelling too much on the past nudges us towards depressive feelings, while spending too much time fretting about the future can lead us to sit alongside anxiety and our anxious thoughts.  I share the beautiful and inspiring words of Emily Dickinson: “Forever is composed of nows,"  along with some easy present-moment provoking strategies that have worked for me.   If little ones are around when you listen to this, pop the headphones on, as there are some moments with fruity language! The Solo Sessions: How To Calm Your Crimbo Nervous System
2022/12/03
It's that time of year when, if we're not careful, we can take our exhaustion and burnout, throw some fairy lights over the top and hose it down with a bottle of Bailey's! It's imperative we manage our stress and take better care of ourselves, so we don't start the new year with a bucket of burnout tucked under our arms.  As a mental health writer, I've noticed how so many of us know very little about the mechanics of stress and how our nervous system operates.  In this episode, I talk about why our primitive brain and outdated hard wiring go on overdrive this time of year. I explain how our parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system works, and what we can do to help calm it and get back to a place of peace, helping us stave off exhaustion, overwhelm and burnout.  My wish for you after listening to this quickity-quick solo chat is that you begin to take regular moments throughout the day to calm and reset your nervous system.  Set reminders for throughout your day to do:  Breathwork, meditationYoga, tapping, Walk in nature, enjoy some sunshine or fresh air, Nap or restCuddle a pet, cuddle someone you love and trust, enjoy a weighted blanket around your shoulders Dance or physically move and shake off the stress-energyTurn down the volume on any stimulation, reduce screens, sounds, lights  People I mention in this episode are: Sarah Tobin Tapping scripts @sarah_tobin Caroline Meade Meditations @itstimeforme.ie Kelly Day Meditations @thisiskellyday Yoga with Adriene (and Benji the dog) @adrienelouise These episodes are not intended to be medical advice. But if you are struggling, remember YOU matter. I'm a big cheerleader for anyone who seeks the help they need and deserve from a mental health professional.  Please like and subscribe to this podcast if you've enjoyed listening.
