Somebody is discovering Hot Springs Village for the very first time today. That’s something I have to remind myself of whenever I wonder if we’ve already talked about a particular subject or shown you a certain part of the Village. Maybe we have—but you may not have been here yet! I think about bands that have been performing for decades. They’ve played their biggest hits thousands of times, but when people buy a ticket, they still want to hear those songs. Hot Springs Village Inside Out is a little like that. New people become interested in HSV every day, and they arrive with many of the same questions the rest of us once had. So yes, sometimes I’m going to repeat myself. I’ll revisit places we’ve visited before and talk again about things longtime viewers may already know. And I’m happy to do it, because after all these years, I love Hot Springs Village more today than ever. Sometimes the best rides don’t need much of a plan. A couple from Mississippi came to Hot Springs Village and asked to meet. I hopped on the XMAX and rode to Reunion Resort Villas just in case I could catch them outside. Along the way, I took you down the entire length of Maderas Drive, probably my favorite boulevard in all of Hot Springs Village. Sometimes the best rides — and conversations — happen when there really isn’t much of an agenda. But, I do have some things on my mind thanks to the questions YOU ask. Your input informs the episodes I produce. Including this one! I climbed aboard the XMAX and headed out for a ride around Hot Springs Village. The weather was beautiful, the roads were inviting, and I had a few things on my mind to share with you. First, Porch Prowling season is back! Cooler, more comfortable weather means it’s a great time for me to start visiting more of your porches. These episodes have always been about more than houses. I enjoy seeing how people actually live in Hot Springs Village, hearing their stories, and showing you the different ways people create a life here. I’m also working on an updated cost-of-living episode for Hot Springs Village. I know that’s an important subject for people considering retirement here. The early spoiler is that I’m not finding dramatic changes. But I want to dig into the numbers and give you an updated look at what it really costs to live here. Then there are a couple of fears I occasionally hear from viewers. One is the concern that POA assessments could eventually get out of control. That deserves some context because our governing documents place limits on how assessment increases can happen, including circumstances that require approval by the membership. Rather than simply worrying about what could happen, I think it’s useful to understand how HSV is actually governed. The other fear is almost the opposite: What if everybody discovers Hot Springs Village? Could HSV suddenly experience explosive growth and lose the character that makes it special? I don’t think that’s especially likely. Hot Springs Village has been here for more than half a century and is still only about one-third developed. We’re also not sitting on the edge of Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Atlanta, or another huge metropolitan area with millions of people pushing outward toward us. That doesn’t mean HSV won’t continue to grow. I hope it does. Healthy, sustainable growth is good for a community. But there’s quite a distance between healthy growth and suddenly waking up one morning to discover that everybody in America has moved to Hot Springs Village. So this episode really did begin with no agenda. Just a ride. But that’s one of the things I enjoy about riding around Hot Springs Village. There’s always something to see, something to think about, and something worth talking about. For others, it’s living close enough to enjoy the lakes without paying for waterfront property. Either way, you’re surrounded by the natural beauty that makes this place special. I’ve been thinking about retirement and how we often talk about it as though the goal is simply to get away from something. We retire from the job, the commute, the meetings, the deadlines, the stress—all the stuff we’ve spent decades dealing with. But I’m convinced there’s a better question to ask: What are you retiring TO? Because sooner or later, the newness of not having to go to work wears off. Then what? I think we all need something that gives us a reason to get up in the morning. Maybe it’s spending more time with people we love. Maybe it’s golf, riding a scooter around Hot Springs Village, volunteering, traveling, learning something new, creating something, or just being more involved in a community. It doesn’t have to be some grand purpose. It just needs to matter to you. That’s one of the things I appreciate about life here in Hot Springs Village—there are so many opportunities to figure out what you want this next chapter to look like. Retirement shouldn’t just be about finally stopping something you’ve been doing for 40 years. Maybe the bigger opportunity is deciding what you’d like to start. Don’t just retire FROM something. There are certain mornings when you can just feel the season beginning to change — and this was one of them. I headed out early on the Yamaha XMAX for another ride through Hot Springs Village, and the temperature was a crisp 66 degrees. After months of warm Arkansas mornings, I made the mistake of thinking 66 wouldn’t feel all that chilly. So I left the jacket at home. That was a mistake. Once the scooter was moving and the cool morning air started hitting me, 66 degrees suddenly felt considerably cooler. It was easily the chilliest morning ride I’ve taken as we approach the fall of 2026. But it was also absolutely beautiful. The early morning light coming through the trees, quiet roads winding through the Village, and that unmistakable coolness in the air offered the first little hint that summer won’t be with us much longer. One of the things I enjoy most about living in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, is experiencing the changing seasons. We get plenty of hot summer days, but eventually mornings like this begin showing up. Before long, the leaves will start changing, temperatures will become more comfortable, and one of the prettiest times of the year in the Ouachita Mountains will arrive. And riding the XMAX has given me an entirely different way to experience it. From inside a car, 66 degrees is just a number displayed on the dashboard. On a scooter, you experience every degree of it! You notice the temperature, the smells, the sunlight, the shadows through the trees, and all the little changes happening around you. So come along with me for fall’s first chilly ride through Hot Springs Village. It may still be August, and summer certainly isn't finished yet, but this morning provided a little preview of what's coming. And next time the thermometer says 66? I spend a lot of time talking about Hot Springs Village, Arkansas - what it’s like to live here, the golf courses, lakes, neighborhoods, amenities, cost of living, retirement lifestyle, and all the little things you discover only by spending time inside the Village. But that doesn’t mean I’m qualified to answer every question about living in Hot Springs Village. Not even close. Take dating in retirement. I’ve been married to Rhonda for almost half a century. If you’re looking for advice about the Hot Springs Village dating scene, I am most definitely not your guy! The same goes for what it’s like to move to HSV as a single person, rebuild your social life after losing a spouse, navigate serious healthcare needs, become an avid golfer, master pickleball, or experience retirement after completely giving up work. I can show you what I see, introduce you to people who know far more than I do, and share my own experiences, but sometimes the most accurate answer I can give you is, “I don’t know.” And that’s really the point of this episode of HSV Inside Out. My goal has never been to convince you that Hot Springs Village is the perfect retirement community for everybody. It isn’t. My goal is to show you as much of the real Hot Springs Village lifestyle as I can. The good, the bad, the interesting, and occasionally the ridiculous, so you can decide whether it might be right for you. There are things I know because I’ve experienced them, things I observe because I live here, and things I’m not qualified to tell you. Knowing the difference matters. So pull up a chair on the porch. When I recorded this I was not thinking of what happened 25 years ago, 9/11. But it seems fitting in the face of the largest act of terrorism against our country. The whole point of terrorism is in the name - to create fear, terror! Doing hard things is always more difficult when the risks are great. So it was on 9/11 when 2,977 victims died and 343 NYC firefighters, 27 NYC police officers and 37 NYC Port Authority personnel sacrificed themselves. In the United States, we live in the greatest country the world has ever known. Our freedoms give us limitless opportunities while providing us the ability to live quiet, peaceful lives. I've never done anything remotely close to the first responders who rushed in during 9/11. Today's episode is not even a third cousin to that kind of "scary." But fear is a funny thing - it has a drastic scope and scale. And it provides us a degree of courage we might not otherwise have - knowing that soldiers through history have risked (and often given) their lives - so the rest of us can battle our own much, much smaller fears. Growing older well requires courage and resilience. Strength. Commitment. Endurance. Permit some encouragement to embrace the fears that may be stopping you from going forward. Do it anyway. Be smart. Be wiser! Above all, be thankful you have the ability and opportunity. Randy ---------------------------------- There’s a difference between doing something dangerous and behaving recklessly. As we get older, understanding that difference may become more important than ever. In this episode of Hot Springs Village Inside Out, I’m riding my Yamaha XMAX through Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, on wet roads. And yes, that makes me a little nervous. But that’s also the point. It’s easy, especially as we get older, to slowly make our lives smaller. We stop doing certain things because they make us uncomfortable. We avoid something new because we’re afraid we might fail, fall, look foolish, or discover that we’re not as capable as we once were. Before long, fear can begin making decisions for us. I don’t want that. Learning to ride the XMAX has certainly reminded me that fear isn’t always a signal to stop. Sometimes fear is simply telling us, “Pay attention. This matters. You’re doing something unfamiliar.” That doesn’t mean ignoring legitimate danger or taking foolish risks. Riding on wet pavement requires more caution. It means slowing down, staying smooth, increasing following distance, avoiding sudden inputs and respecting the conditions. But there’s a big difference between respecting fear and surrendering to it. Retirement can give us an extraordinary opportunity to try things we never had the time—or perhaps the courage—to try before. Maybe it’s riding a scooter. Maybe it’s traveling somewhere unfamiliar, learning a new skill, starting a business, making new friends, moving to a new community, creating something, or simply saying yes when our first instinct is to retreat to what feels safe. One of the things I’ve discovered about riding around Hot Springs Village on the Yamaha XMAX is that the scooter is becoming more than transportation. It’s giving me experiences. It’s challenging me. And every time I do something that makes me a little uncomfortable and come out the other side, my world gets a little bigger. Maybe that's something worth protecting as we grow older. We don't need to become reckless. We don't need to prove anything to anybody. But we should be careful about allowing fear to quietly take things away from us. Do some scary things. Be smart. Be careful. Respect the danger. But don't let fear shrink your life.
