We all know that safety is a key operational part of any business. But would you say it also plays a key role in your company culture? So often, the blame falls upon subcontractors for workplace incidents. Rarely do organisations take a step back and ask, 'how did we fail?'. Mates: Stronger together. That’s the simple, yet powerful message behind Mates in Construction. They have been an organisation dedicated to suicide prevention and support since 2008, and today on the pod, I chat with their CEO Brad Parker.  We’ve still got a long way to go in our industry when it comes to mental health. However, it's providing places like this for people to go and seek help that are going to continue to make all the difference. 

Jeremy Owens, CEO of Three Generations Improvement, has launched an exciting new venture that will have a HUGE impact on the construction industry globally. You might be familiar with the old adage, “If you want to get more down, slow down.” Now I know we all have endless to-do lists and it can sometimes feel impossible to break away from the busyness and chaos of everyday life. But when we really think about it, do we truly get much of the impactful stuff done when our mind feels like it's running at a million miles an hour? Usually we just jump between all of our competing priorities and end up feeling as exhausted and stressed as ever. If this feels like a situation you often find yourself in, I definitely recommend tuning into my chat today with Mindfulness Expert Brett Hill. Brett gave me insight into the power we have in our lives to make our own choices and how we can experience freedom every single day. In just a couple of simple steps, you can move from a state of reaction to a state of conscious decision making. The impact this can make on your life overtime is pretty profound. Facing adversities at one point or another is inevitable for human-beings. It's how you bounce-back, overcome challenges and move forward with positivity that allows you to truly live and become stronger.  Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common genetic conditions in Caucasions and can lead to digestive and respiratory health issues, and often, sadly, death. In today's podcast, hear from Nathan Charles, the CEO of Rugby Western Australia, 4 x Wallabies player and National Ambassador of Cystic fibrosis who shares his challenging yet inspiring journey through juggling this disease while playing professional Rugby for his country.  Nathan inspires many Australians today, including me, and proves that if you want something enough and are prepared to work towards a goal, you can achieve it! Have a listen, and be left feeling encouraged and uplifted from the energy Nathan brings! 

Imagine yourself holding a photo of the ocean to a room full of people. Then, imagine asking them to tell you one word that described the picture. You're probably going to receive a whole bunch of different answers. Blue, serene, pirates, deep, mermaids, calm... So, what's the right word? There's got to be ONE right word, doesn't there? In today's podcast with Sam Thiara, Chief Motivating Officer of Ignite the Dream, Coaching and Consulting, he used this incredible analogy to explain the concept of perspectives. Everyone has their own truth. Everyone is going to give you a different answer to how they would describe the photo - and that's okay! The key as a manager and leader is to listen to these different views, and use them to inform your decision making. If you try and impose your reality on other people without regard for their perspectives, you're never going to get the best out of your team. I had such a great time speaking with Sam, and I just know that anyone who tunes into this episode will come away feeling inspired. Sam just has that kind of energy!

Patrizia Cassaniti is on a mission to tackle open conversations and ‘speaking-up’ about safety. Why? Because when mistakes happen, they can have really serious consequences. Patrizia's goal is to shift the mindset around approaching safety on sites. She wants to encourage construction workers to feel empowered about speaking out about unsafe work environments, and for Project Managers to engage in conversation with their workers, rather than talking to them about safety without dialogue. Since the tragic loss of her son Christopher in 2019 in a scaffolding accident,  Patrizia founded the Touched by Christopher Foundation and her company Let's Talk About Safety Australia. Through Let's Talk About Safety, Patrizia delivers keynote talks on job sites to help change the culture around risk and safety in construction.
