They Came to Baghdad in Armored Convoys. He Walked to the Same Meeting.
2026/10/23
A group of Western executives arrived at a U.S. Chamber of Commerce event in Baghdad inside armored convoys, and didn't want to get out of the vehicles.
Dr. Midhat Zwayen had walked there. He told them the weather was nice.
Dr. Zwayen grew up in Iraq in the 1990s, under sanctions, in a country you couldn't easily leave. He worked in his father's engineering office, watched that business pivot into trading with Russian and Chinese partners, took his first trip outside the Arab world in 2006, and eventually earned a PhD in the United States. His book, Leadership Beyond Borders: A Western Executive's Guide to the Iraqi Business Mindset, came out of noticing the same gap over and over — in both directions.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate talks with Dr. Zwayen about what the news doesn't show you about Iraq, why trust works differently when the banking system doesn't, and the leadership style he argues actually survives in emerging markets.
In this conversation:
• Growing up under sanctions, and what it does to your sense of the outside world
• Culture shock — and what's on the other side of it if you push through
• What Western executives assume about Iraq before they arrive
• The armored convoy, and the walk
• Why media is a source of information, not a picture of a place — and what that means for anyone making decisions off it
• Baghdad as a historical melting pot, and the parallel he draws to the United States
• Why Iraqi business still runs on personal trust and cash, and how that changes the pace of a deal
• Jeremy's counter-argument: that American business has degraded trust in the other direction
• Dictatorship versus servant leadership, and which one he's seen last
• The many different cultures inside Iraq — north, south, east, and the blend in the middle
• Iraq as "virgin land": how much of its heritage is still unexcavated

We Don’t Have a Homeless Problem in America. We Have Thousands of Them.
2026/10/16
Rich Schaus beat his own alcohol addiction, became a captain in the U.S. Army, got out — and then couldn't find a job. He was applying for 200 positions a week, including janitor at a small zoo.
Then he applied to a women's shelter he'd misread the listing for, and the HR director told him they'd never hire a man. They hired him. He sat down to dinner with the residents and their kids in his first weeks, and that was that.
Twenty-some years later he runs Gospel Rescue Mission in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and his central argument is this: America doesn't have a homeless problem. It has thousands of them, each with a different root cause, and we keep treating it like one.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate talks with Rich about what's actually underneath chronic homelessness, why drugs are usually a symptom rather than a cause, and the four-person model he's building in Muskogee.
In this conversation:
- Breaking his own addiction inside the Army — and the artillery crew that failed a drug test
- Why a man who'd given up asked him to "define shower"
- The straight-A student who used meth so he wouldn't get a B — and ended up on the street
- How he got into this work entirely by accident
- Why rebuilding someone's self-worth starts with getting curious, not with a program
- Trauma as the real root cause — and the story people tell themselves afterward
- The electrician whose greatest success arrived the same day as his greatest loss
- The man who wanted the NFL, and the job that got him closer than he expected
- "Supported by Four" — 150 homeless, 75 churches, and what happens if four people walk alongside one person until they own a home
- Why food, money and material help are a temporary fix for a relationship problem
If you've ever driven past someone and not known what would actually help, this is a useful 28 minutes.

The Chronic Pain Trap: Why It's So Hard to Get Out Once You're In
2026/09/29
Most people don't realize they're stuck in the chronic pain system until they're already deep in it.
Dr. Ryan Cleland trained as a chemist before becoming a chiropractor. In 2017 he moved his practice into a pain management facility and saw chronic pain up close for the first time — the hardware, the surgeries, the pharmaceutical lists as long as your arm.
His analogy for it is quicksand. Early on you're in it to the ankles and getting out is hard but possible. By the time most people start looking for another way, they're in to the chest with nothing to grab.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate talks with Dr. Cleland about how people end up trapped, why the alternatives rarely get mentioned, and what actually determines which treatments a patient gets offered.
In this conversation:
- Why he left chemistry for chiropractic — and it wasn't an inspiring story
- What he saw when he moved into a pain management practice in 2017
- Why the people in the opioid statistics are "somebody's mom, somebody's dad"
- The quicksand analogy — and why most people don't reach for help until they're chest-deep
- Why joints degrade when you stop maintaining them
- Cortisone shots, athletes, and the difference between using something and depending on it
- What insurance and Medicare actually cover, and what that means for your options
- PRP versus stem cells, and why your age changes the answer
- How topical delivery through skin actually works
- How his faith shapes the way he thinks about the body healing itself

The Cyberwar Expert Who Says AI Swarms Are Already Out of Control
2026/09/18
Chris Kubecka has spent her career inside real cyberattacks, including the 2012 attack on Saudi Aramco, where she led the response after malware wiped the company's network.
Her assessment of where AI sits right now: it favors the attacker, and some systems are already running without meaningful human control.
She describes AI swarms that coordinate across websites, message boards and chat systems, sharing information, passing instructions, naming the next target, with logic you can read and intent that isn't always friendly. And she says the AI companies themselves have started telling everyone to raise their defenses.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate talks with Chris about what cyber warfare actually looks like, why critical infrastructure is so hard to defend, and why she thinks the window on AI oversight may already have closed.
In this conversation:
• Why AI currently favors attackers over defenders
• AI swarms operating without human control, and how they coordinate with each other
• Why she thinks "we don't fully understand how it works" is partly a liability shield
• Where AI-driven attacks still fall short of a skilled human team
• The Drake Equation, and the condition she added in 2014: civilizations have to survive AI, not just reach it
• What a real cyberattack looks like versus the movie version
• Why power grids, hospitals and water systems run on equipment that can't be secured
• The unresolved question of when a cyberattack legally becomes an act of war
• Inside Saudi Aramco in 2012, restoring systems while still under attack
• How attackers got the CEO's brand-new password and posted it online
• The password that got her into the U.S. Department of Justice as a kid
Chris is the CEO of HypaSec and the author of multiple books on cyberwarfare, drones, and AI.
Note: the views, assessments and claims in this conversation are the guest's own, based on her professional experience and opinion. Several relate to fast-moving events and have not been independently verified by Command Your Brand.

He Hated Cold Calling. So He Wrote a Book — and CEOs Started Taking His Calls.
2026/09/11
Mark Ryski spent years unable to get retail executives on the phone. He hated cold calling and was bad at it. So he wrote a book — and started sending it to CEOs of retail chains.
They started taking his calls.
That was three books and 23 years ago. Today HeadCount does traffic and conversion analytics for retailers in more than 20 countries, with a largest client running 1,600 stores. But the road there ran through two complete failures: a 1990s version built out of $300 of RadioShack parts that nobody wanted, and a 2003 relaunch that also went nowhere.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate talks with Mark about using authorship as a door-opener, knowing when NOT to pivot, and what actually separates real thought leadership from the performative kind.
In this conversation:
- Watching customers walk out of a store without buying — the problem that started everything
- Why his boss wouldn't spend $2,500 on a traffic counter, and what he built instead
- Two failed versions of the same company, ten years apart
- Eight years at Intuit running QuickBooks for Canada
- "The credibility of authorship" — how a self-published book replaced cold calling
- Why a little success can misdirect an entrepreneur worse than failure does
- When holding your course beats pivoting, and how to tell the difference
- Losing 40% of revenue when COVID closed retail — and what came after
- The Jeff Bezos question he's never stopped thinking about: what WON'T change?
- Three honest tests for whether someone is actually a thought leader
If you're building authority in a field where nobody knows your name yet, this one's worth your time.

Hiring in Another State? Your LLC Probably Isn't Compliant.
2026/09/04
Most companies that hire someone in another state have no idea they've just taken on a compliance obligation in that state.
Nellie Akalp has been forming businesses since 1997. She founded MyCorporation.com, sold it to Intuit in 2005, and started CorpNet in 2009 — where she now runs a 100+ person company that keeps businesses compliant across all 50 states.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate talks with Nellie about what actually happens when you expand across state lines — and about building the same kind of company twice. (Full disclosure: Command Your Brand is a CorpNet customer. We found them through Gusto and used them to register in Georgia. This isn't a sponsored episode.)
In this conversation:
- What foreign qualification actually means, and why hiring in a state triggers it
- Payroll tax registration, workers' comp, and the obligations most remote companies miss
- Why she left law school money on the table to start an internet company in 1997
- Selling MyCorporation to Intuit — and starting over from zero
- Eight hard years at CorpNet before anything worked
- How COVID told them which product to build the company around
- Scaling 12 people to 100+ — what actually had to change
- Why they promote from within and refuse to hire leadership from outside
- The one non-negotiable: they don't sell customer data
- Where AI helps, and where they keep a human in the loop on purpose
If you're hiring remotely, expanding into a new state, or just not sure whether you're actually compliant where you operate — start here.
This conversation is for general educational purposes and is not legal, tax, or financial advice. Rules vary by state and change often. Consult a qualified professional about your specific situation.

She Started a Dating Site for Foodies. Killing It Was the Best Decision She Made.
2026/08/28
Michelle Mazzara's first business was an online dating site for foodies. She was first to market. Six months in, she shut it down.
Twelve years later, Luvafoodie is a clean-eating spice brand sold through regional grocery — and about to make the jump to national.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate talks with Michelle about what it actually takes to kill a good idea fast, build a consumer brand from nothing, and get a product onto a grocery shelf and keep it there.
In this conversation:
- Why she walked away from a first-to-market idea after six months
- How selling caramels in local Minnesota stores became the test that proved the brand
- Why short shelf life killed the chocolate line — and led to spices
- A heart disease misdiagnosis, and the salt-free product line that came out of it
- The spice blend she developed for her dog Lucy, who lived to 17 and a half
- Why packaging aesthetics are "the communication that happens before communication"
- The scary move she's making right now: spice tins to shaker jars, and a new co-packer
- Be a big fish in a small pond first — the local-to-regional-to-national path
- Exactly how she got from single stores into a grocery chain's distribution center
- What she won't co-brand with, and why
- Being a solo woman founder: total freedom, and nobody to check you

2026/08/24
After 1,100 podcast interviews, Leigh Martinuzzi noticed something he didn't expect: the happiest people he spoke to weren't the most famous or the most successful. They were the most aligned.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate sits down with Leigh — host of The Hidden Why podcast and a real estate agent on Australia's Sunshine Coast — to unpack what a decade and 1,100 conversations taught him about goals, purpose, and why so many people hit their targets and still feel flat.

Why You’re Probably Paying Too Much in Taxes
2026/08/07
Are you paying more in taxes than you legally need to?
Dr. Veronica Everett Boyce believes one of the biggest financial mistakes entrepreneurs and everyday Americans make is relying entirely on other people to understand the tax code for them.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate sits down with Dr. V, founder of Dr. V's Tree of Life, to discuss tax education, wealth, responsibility, service, and why understanding how the tax system actually works can change the way you think about your money.
Dr. V shares her own experience facing more than $180,000 in IRS debt and explains why that experience pushed her to spend years studying tax law. She argues that understanding the rules isn't about illegally evading taxes—it's about becoming educated enough to ask better questions and make informed decisions.
In this conversation, you'll discover:
• Why so many people never learn how taxes actually work
• The difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion
• Why business owners shouldn't completely outsource financial knowledge
• How tax planning connects to wealth and legacy
• Why Dr. V believes financial education starts with personal responsibility
• The role tax-exempt structures can play in certain circumstances
• Why keeping more money isn't the end goal—it's what you do with it
• How entrepreneurs can think differently about service and purpose
If you're an entrepreneur, CEO, founder, or business owner who wants to better understand money, taxes, and wealth creation, this conversation will challenge the way you think.
IMPORTANT: This conversation is for educational purposes only and should not be considered individualized tax, legal, or financial advice. Consult qualified professionals regarding your specific circumstances.

Why Most Business Books FAIL (And How to Write One That Wins) | Anna David
2026/07/17
Most entrepreneurs think writing a book is about becoming a bestselling author.
They're wrong.
In this episode of the Command Your Brand Show, Jeremy Ryan Slate sits down with New York Times bestselling author Anna David, founder of Legacy Launch Pad Publishing, to discuss why most business books fail—and how the right book can become your most powerful authority-building asset.
You'll learn:
