Today 3.6 billion people still live without a safely managed toilet. This means that even when some people have access to a toilet, they still face multiple risks. When we talk about toilets, our minds often gravitate to a white ceramic slab or pan. Many of us think that all toilets are connected to piped sewer systems. This is far from reality. Many people in developing countries rely on on-site sanitation that starts with containment that catches human waste and requires emptying. Behind each toilet are massive infrastructure and operational arrangements that form the foundations of a safely managed toilet. Together with two water and sanitation experts, Rajeev Munankami and Maria Carreiro, we discuss the urgent need to broaden our perspectives about toilets and make the term ‘safe sanitation’ actionable, especially in light of today’s rapidly changing climate. Water usage is limited, and the amount of water available is shared with multiple sectors. When you build a latrine upstream, this will affect the water source downstream. Since IWRM and WASH are interlinked, it's important to cooperate. Together with two experts in the field, Evelyne Busingye (RAIN, Aidenvironment) and Tamene Chaka (Amref Health Africa Ethiopia), we discussed the importance of both IWRM and WASH, how they (can) collaborate and the next steps to be taken. How do women in Africa and Asia manage their period in times of COVID-19? Normally, schools are the main source of reliable information and a safe place. Due to COVID-19, schools were closed, houses were packed and privacy was scarce, to not even mention the stress that comes with a pandemic. Together with two experts in the field, Andrew Samuel Kiiza (Plan International Uganda) and Pema Lhaki (NFCC, Nepal), we discussed the situation, the work that the government does and the next steps to be taken.  This podcast was produced as part of Menstrual Hygiene Day 2021.
