A country I have much personal connection with as I was born here. It has seen cycles of democracy and authoritarianism swapping back and forth in the country's complex political history. The issue of the military is ever-present in Thailand today. This episode will dig deep into one of the most remarkable moments in Thai politics where the popular will for democracy was for the first time seen take concrete action and a military dictatorship was toppled. This significant event also marked a special era in Thai politics where the power of students, labourers and peasants was flourishing as a force that could no longer be seen today. Military rule and martial law were present in many East Asian countries throughout the early through to the late 21st century. This culminated in decades of state violence, repression and civilian massacres. An infamous event took place in Taiwan after World War 2 following this same authoritarian pattern; The February 28 Incident, the focus of this episode. The event's aftermath and highly commendable u-turn in the government response nowadays, after the country's rapid democratization will also be highlighted. This was a watershed event in Taiwan's history, which would permanently transform its sociopolitical landscape with the effects still seen today. Vietnam's contemporary history is a subject of significance to many historians and politicians as it progresses through the transformation of political systems, opposing doctrines, proxy wars and domestic turmoil fuelled by discontent and radicalization.
