Are you hiding the value of your adjustment?
2026/10/28
You tell people the adjustment is the most important part of their care. Does their experience tell the same story?
In an art gallery, the space around a painting helps draw attention to it. In practice, adding more to a visit can make it harder for people to recognise what you want them to value.
In this episode, Martin explores “white space”: giving the adjustment room to stand out within the care experience.
You’ll hear:
How a well-intended mix of techniques can blur your message. Why what clients experience can carry more weight than what you explain. How a simple before-and-after test can help people notice changes in function. How to make the purpose of each part of a visit clearer.
A practical episode about communicating value through what you do, and what you leave space around.

The value of persistence, planning and a people first philosophy with Dr Josh Slade
2026/10/21
How do you step away from a practice without everything depending on you?
Dr Josh Slade has moved from being the sole chiropractor in his Cairns practice to leading a team remotely, while opening a new practice in Brisbane.
In this episode, he joins Martin to share what worked, what went wrong, and what he had to learn to let go.
They discuss:
How to give your team ownership without stepping back in.
Helping clients value their care beyond their connection with one chiropractor.
Building local relationships when nobody knows your new practice.
Keeping your goal clear when your plan keeps falling apart.
For chiropractors who want to grow their practice, develop their team, and keep people at the centre of both.

Your best reactivation question is just 2 words.
2026/10/07
They stopped care. The pain came back. Now they've booked in again.
It’s easy to pick up where you left off. But something made them decide to return today.
In this episode, I explore two words that help uncover it: “Why now?”
Perhaps there’s a hiking trip coming up. They want to get fit for a wedding. Or they’re tired of struggling to play with their kids.
We look at why people minimise their problems, how to uncover what matters to them, and how to make a reactivation visit more relevant.
They’re back. This is your chance to understand what’s changed.

"Would you send your mum there?" With Dr Bec Bowring
2026/09/23
What does it take to build a practice you would happily send your own mum to?
Dr Bec Bowring has been in practice for more than 32 years. Today, she helps lead seven chiropractors across three Sydney locations, each with its own community, team and focus.
In this episode, Martin and Bec discuss how her work has evolved from a traditional chiropractic setting to collaborating with dentists on paediatric development, airway health, and sleep.
They explore how chiropractic can complement dental care, why some interdisciplinary partnerships succeed while others fail, and the importance of aligning on both clinical standards and how a practice is run.
Bec also discusses her changing approach to leadership. Rather than trying to mould associates into copies of herself, she now focuses on finding good people and giving them “bounded autonomy” within a clear practice culture.
They discuss creating a boutique practice, choosing quality over volume, making the environment part of the experience and the question guiding Bec’s decisions:
“Would I send my mum here?”
A thoughtful conversation about collaboration, leadership, and building a remarkable practice without losing sight of what matters.

What if your clients could see their adjustment? with Dr Vismai Schonfelder
2026/09/09
What if your clients could actually see what was happening to their nervous system around an adjustment?
That question sits behind Chiro Ring, the wearable Dr Vismai Schonfelder has spent the past few years developing.
In this episode, Vismai joins Martin to talk about why he believes wearable technology could change the way chiropractors communicate the value of what they do.
They explore how Chiro Ring can track health metrics around an adjustment, why personal data can sometimes communicate more powerfully than another explanation, and the enormous research opportunity created when thousands of adjustments can be logged over time.
But there’s a bigger idea underneath it all.
Nervous-system regulation is having a moment.
People are tracking sleep, HRV, stress and recovery. They’re doing breathwork, meditation and cold plunges.
Yet chiropractic is often missing from the conversation.
Vismai wants to change that.
They also debrief the recent Bali Reset, including what Vismai changed in his practice and life after creating enough space actually to think.
A conversation about data, communication, adaptability and what chiropractic might look like if we make it easier for people to understand what we’ve been talking about all along.

When chiropractic comes under threat with Dr Nimrod Mueller
2026/08/26
What do you do when chiropractic itself comes under threat?
In this episode, Martin is joined again by Dr Nimrod Mueller.
The conversation starts with a fascinating shift happening among Gen Z chiropractors, team members and practice members: less interest in optimisation, career climbing and rigid commitment, and more value placed on autonomy, connection and quality of life.
Then the conversation gets bigger.
Nimrod explains the regulatory challenge currently facing chiropractors in Spain and what it could mean for their ability to practise.
But this isn’t just an episode about Spain.
It’s a conversation about how a small profession responds when it feels threatened.
Do we fight louder?
Do we retreat?
Or do we get better at communication, research, political influence, and understanding the people we’re trying to persuade?
Martin and Nimrod explore why evidence matters, why evidence alone often isn’t enough, and why the future of chiropractic may depend on our ability to fight smarter, not louder.

Neuro wellness, adaptability and what comes next with Dr Nimrod Mueller
2026/08/19
Wellness has spent years telling us to track more.
Sleep. HRV. Steps. Blood sugar. Recovery scores.
But what happens when measuring your health starts making you less healthy?
In this episode, Martin sits down with Dr Nimrod Mueller to explore two trends from the Global Wellness Summit’s Future of Wellness 2026 report that could have big implications for chiropractic.
They discuss the growing backlash against over-optimisation, the rise of “neuro wellness”, and why adaptability may be a better way to think about health than trying to keep every physiological metric inside a perfect range.
They also explore what these shifts mean in practice:
Why people are becoming tired of turning health into a dashboardThe growing interest in nervous system regulationWhy adaptability, resilience and lived experience matterHow chiropractors can communicate these ideas without dismissing other approachesHow the environment and experience of a practice can support people who already feel overloaded and stressed
Perhaps the biggest opportunity is this:
People are becoming more interested in many of the ideas that chiropractic has discussed for a long time.
The challenge is learning how to join that conversation well.

When more benefits make you less persuasive
2026/08/12
We tend to think persuasion works like maths.
One good reason is persuasive. So five good reasons must be five times better.
Except that’s not how people think.
In this episode, Martin explores the argument dilution effect: why adding weaker benefits to a strong reason can actually make your overall message less compelling.
Using the example of a patient with headaches, Martin looks at why “being able to concentrate at work again” may carry far more weight than adding abstract benefits such as better posture, spinal function or “optimising health.”
You’ll learn:
Why people can average arguments rather than add them togetherThe difference between strong, moderate and weak reasons for careHow the curse of knowledge makes chiropractors particularly vulnerable to argument dilutionWhy communicating value starts with empathyHow the most important benefit can change as someone progresses through care
Sometimes better communication isn’t about finding another thing to say.
It’s knowing what to leave out.

Your PVA is trying to tell you something
2026/07/29
Most chiropractors know their PVA.
Far fewer know what it’s actually telling them.
In this episode, Martin breaks PVA into four ranges and explains what each one can reveal about your communication, retention, and where patients are dropping away.
You’ll learn:
- Why a low PVA may point to problems early in the patient journey.
- Why a higher PVA doesn’t always mean your communication is working as well as you think.
- Why the skills that take you from 20 to 40 are different from the ones that take you from 40 to 60+.
Think of your PVA less as a score.
More as a signpost.
It tells you where to look next.

Shituation - Their last chiropractor told them to come back when it hurts
2026/07/23
What do you do when a patient has been trained to only come back when they’re in pain?
In this episode of Under the Influence, Martin explores how to handle the “come back when it hurts” mindset without criticising the patient’s previous chiropractor or sounding like you’re trying to sell more care.
The focus is on reframing the conversation from pain as the trigger for care to a broader understanding of function, prevention and long-term value.
A practical episode for anyone who has inherited a patient with a very different expectation of chiropractic care.

The 5 questions that take people from pain to prevention
2026/07/08
Most chiropractors try to improve retention by explaining more.
More education.More certainty.More “here’s why you need care."
But people don’t change their behaviour because we told them something clever.
They change when they see something differently.
In this episode, Martin breaks down five questions that help patients move from a pain-based view of chiropractic to a prevention and performance-based one.
You’ll learn how to help people see the two parts of their problem, connect their symptoms to what matters in their lives, understand why they’re ready to act now, and start noticing how better function changes more than just pain.
Simple questions. Big shifts.

The freedom formula: rituals, creativity, growth & ownership with Dr Erin Hawken
2026/06/24
What if success isn't something you chase, but something you create?
In this episode, Martin sits down with Dr Erin Hawken to explore the four pillars that have shaped her life, career, and approach to success:
• Rituals• Creativity• Growth• Ownership
Together, they discuss why meditation and exercise are more than daily habits, how growth often requires letting go before moving forward, and why true success may have less to do with money, status, or achievement and more to do with freedom.
If you've ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about your next step, this conversation offers a practical framework for creating a business and life that feels aligned, fulfilling and sustainable.

Mistakes chiropractors make on second visits and what to do instead.
2026/06/17
What actually makes a great second visit?
Most chiropractors think it’s about presenting a care plan.
Others think it’s about convincing people to follow one.
More explaining.
More persuading.
More “handling objections.”
But before people commit to a plan, they’re asking something much simpler:
Does this make sense for me?
In Part 2 of this series, Martin zooms out from the step-by-step and explores the psychology of what makes an effective second visit.
Why do some second visits create confidence, clarity, and commitment, while others create confusion?
Martin breaks down the biggest mistakes chiropractors make, and the communication approaches that help people feel clear, supported, and confident in the path ahead.
Including:
• Why too much time between visits weakens momentum• The hidden power of recap and why it reconnects emotion• Why autonomy statements reduce resistance and stop care plans feeling salesy• How to present a clear plan without pressure or apology• Why clarity beats persuasion when building commitment

Mistakes chiropractors make on the first visit and what to do instead.
2026/06/10
What actually makes a great first visit?
Most chiropractors think it’s about gathering information.
Others think it’s about impressing people.
Better explanations. Better credibility. Better findings.
But before people buy into a plan, their brain is asking something much simpler:
Do I feel heard?
In this first episode of a 2-part series, Martin zooms out from the step-by-step and explores the psychology of what makes an effective first visit.
Why do some first visits create trust, certainty, and retention… while others quietly leak patients?
Martin breaks down the biggest mistakes chiropractors make and the key communication approaches that help people feel heard, understood, and clear on the value of care.
Including:
• Why connection matters before credibility• The hidden power of an open-frame history• Why unpacking questions change everything• How “2 parts to the problem” helps people see the bigger picture• Why experiences beat explanations when changing beliefs

How Dr Shady Botros built 800+ GP referral visits a year
2026/06/03
What do you do when practice feels tougher?
Discounts?
More ads?
Lower the barrier to entry?
In this episode, Martin sits down with Dr Shady Botros to unpack a different path: relational growth.
Over the last 15+ years, Shady has developed a framework for building genuine relationships with GPs that has led to more than 800 GP referral visits a year.
Not by watering down chiropractic.
Not by pretending to be something he’s not.
And not by chasing transactional growth.
We talk about:
• Why tough economic times change how people make healthcare decisions
• The difference between transactional and relational practice growth• How Shady approaches GPs without selling out chiropractic
• Why most GPs aren’t anti-chiropractic (they’re mostly just not thinking about you)
• The surprising reason GP referrals can be remarkably stable in uncertain times
• The 4-part framework Shady teaches to build professional relationships with medical doctors
Whether practice feels hard right now or you simply want to help more people without leaning harder into discounts and ads, this one is worth a listen.
