Episode 26: The Reality of Scope 3: Lessons from Leading Iress' First ASRS Report
2026/03/16
Send us Fan Mail
“I think the first thing is to know what you want to achieve. Have some really good discussions with your finance team, procurement, corporate affairs - whoever is involved in this process. Ask yourselves: are you going to set targets, are you just trying to comply, or do you actually want your supply base to reduce their emissions? Because that will inform some of the decisions that you are going to make, particularly when in the context of Categories 1 and 2. When we think about Scope 3, I think, on a related note, absolutely circle the wagons. Get all your stakeholders around this topic early, and that does include your assurance. So have some really good open conversations about what it is that they are expecting, both in terms of their disclosure and what it is that they're going to want to understand from you.”
In this episode of the “Driving Net Profit with Zero Emissions” podcast, we have the pleasure of speaking with Iress, a leading technology company that designs and develops software and services for the financial services industry.
Headquartered in Australia and listed on the ASX, Iress operates across Asia Pacific, the United Kingdom, Africa and North America. Its technology sits at the centre of its clients’ businesses, supporting a wide range of organisations - from small retail firms to large institutional players across the financial services industry.
In this episode, we explore Iress’ experience delivering its first climate disclosure report under Australia’s new mandatory reporting framework, AASB S2. Being among the first companies reporting under a new scheme is never easy. The rules are still evolving, there is limited precedent to rely on, and organisations often need to navigate complex judgement calls along the way.
Tune in to hear how Iress is:
Navigating its first AASB S2 climate disclosure reportTackling the complexities of Scope 3 emissions reportingAddressing data quality challenges across the value chainMaking judgement calls when guidance and precedents are still evolvingBuilding internal capability for mandatory climate reportingTurning early reporting experiences into practical insights for future disclosuresMeet the host

Episode 24: From ambition to action: Local government commitments and strategies for net zero
2024/12/19
Send us Fan Mail
“We have been monitoring the commitments of local governments in Australia since 2017. We've recently updated the ambitious commitments and found that, in total, 165 Councils out of 537 local governments in Australia have made commitments to net zero emissions. This number covers 31% of all councils. NSW takes the lead in terms of the absolute number of councils committing to ambitious targets. Followed closely by Victorian local governments. Looking solely at the number of councils committing to ambitious targets doesn't give the full picture. The more important metric is the fraction of the country's population that is covered by these commitments by councils, who are looking to lead the communities by example. 70% of Australia's population is now covered by ambitious commitments.”
In this special episode of “Driving Profit with Net Zero emissions” podcast, we're revisiting a recent webinar that we hosted— "From ambition to action: Local government commitments and strategies for net zero"
This year, local governments across Australia have made remarkable progress towards achieving net-zero targets. In this episode, we unpack findings from our latest research on Net Zero Commitments by States, Local Governments, and Communities and share practical strategies to help councils take the lead in climate action.
In this episode, we cover:
State and local government climate commitments: Gain insights into the ambitious targets shaping Australia’s net-zero future.Setting and communicating meaningful targets: Learn how councils can effectively engage their communities and align on climate goals.Building credible transition plans: Discover best practices for developing actionable and impactful net-zero strategies.Smplifying climate data management: See how tools like our C-Compass streamline reporting, enhance decision-making, and ensure transparency. The next frontier for councils: Dive into transformative opportunities and strategies that empower councils to push boundaries in climate leadership and drive impactful, future-ready actions.

“It is about understanding the low-hanging fruit and working on that. You don't have to change everything overnight. Yes, to do something like going carbon neutral, you have to be able to commit to buying offsets and not every business has that ability. So, the aim is to reduce your emissions first so that you have to buy less offsets. Seems obvious but really critical to do. And the other thing is to look around within the tourism industry at the help that's out there. The federal government has just put out a sustainability toolkit, Eco-Tourism Australia has a sustainability scorecard before you move into the accreditation rankings of Eco-tourism accredited. And so have a look out. There are heaps of tools that can help you identify that low-hanging fruit if you're not sure what it is to start your journey.”
In this episode of “Driving Profit with Net Zero emissions” podcast, we welcome Anthea Hammon, Managing Director at Scenic World Blue Mountains, Australia’s most visited privately owned tourism attraction, nestled in the heart of the Blue Mountains near Sydney. We're excited to discuss Scenic World's strategic commitment to environmental stewardship and their journey towards achieving carbon neutral certification.

“It's called a crisis for a reason, and the sooner we can do things, the better. I think the education that I got through this process was that we are already at a point that is very difficult. So now we all have to get on board. You know, now I look at the world slightly differently when I travel myself, I look at what other people are doing and whether they're not doing it, it's a little bit disappointing. So it's really nice to be at this point where we have offset our footprint, but then to look at what else could we do to take it further forward and how quickly can we do this to actually make a meaningful impact.”
In this episode of “Driving Profit with Net Zero emissions” podcast, we're joined by Deb Zimmer, CEO of BridgeClimb Sydney as we delve deep into the world of one of Sydney’s most iconic attractions. “It doesn’t make sense to go carbon neutral and purchase carbon offsets that might be dodgy. The purpose of achieving carbon neutrality is that you want to prove to the marketplace that you care about the environment and that you are taking a stand against climate change. You don’t want to open yourself up to reputational damage. “
In this special episode of “Driving Profit with Net Zero emissions” podcast, we're revisiting a recent webinar that we hosted in collaboration with TEM (Tasman Environmental Markets) — "How to confidently buy high-integrity carbon offsets."
The webinar breaks down the intricacies of carbon offsetting and provide a clear pathway for strategic carbon credit purchasing.
In this episode, Barbara Albert and Nicolas Francois were joined by our guest speakers from TEM, Brett Giddings (Head of Digital Solutions), and Rebecca Heard (Manager of Corporate Partnerships and Digital Solutions).
In this episode, we cover:

“I think authenticity is really important. It's nice to look and learn from what other people are doing, but follow your own normative compass. Follow the path that looks right for you and your organisation, and just work your way through it, step by step. Be ready to have ethically defensible strategies when operating in areas that are open to critique, but it's more important to be a doer than a critic. We also need to be self-reflective and critical and be agile when we can. Take the opportunities when we can, be bold.”
In this podcast episode, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Roger Attwater, Senior Manager at the Environmental Sustainability at Western Sydney University’s Division of Infrastructure and Commercial. Roger leads the team overseeing the implementation of the Environmental Sustainability Policy and the Environmental Sustainability Action Plan and related initiatives, including engagement opportunities through the Living Labs.

“One of the most impactful things we can do if you're passionate about climate change is to support politics. It's striking at the root of what needs to be done to make sure that the people who are working on the policies are going to drive this transformation. If we don't have the right people working at the root in favour of this, then we can all be wasting so much of our time.”
In this podcast episode, we speak with Simon Holmes à Court, an entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist who founded Climate 200, which is an initiative aimed at empowering communities to nurture their own political candidates and effect change on climate issues.
We talk about Australia's lost decade on climate action, and Simon’s book "The Big Teal' which was published in 2022. We also dive deep into the role of politics in supporting businesses in their transition to net zero and how business can support politics.

“We don't have to worry about the next quarterly cycle, like public companies do. We can take judgments that transcend that cycle, understanding that seasons and natural systems produce variable results. We've made a judgment to leave a whole bunch of fish uncaught, with a negative impact on profitability, and we've made that call based on what we've felt is in the long term interest of the fishery. It's a privilege that we can play the long game and deliver long term shareholder value.”
In this podcast episode, we speak with David Carter, CEO of Austral Fisheries, one of Australia’s largest integrated commercial fishing companies. Austral shows unparalleled global leadership in sustainable fishing, is a carbon neutral organisation, and sells carbon neutral products.
Not only do we talk about Austral’s sustainable business practices, their carbon footprint and emissions reduction activities, but we also dive deeper into what motivated David to act on climate change, personally and in his role as CEO of the company.

Episode 15: A world without waste, with Sims Limited

“One of the things that we've also done is put in an internal carbon price. We'll be using that in modelling all our CapEx decisions and strategy to understand the impacts of various decisions on our targets and the financial return. The CFOs of our businesses saw immediately how that process could help us achieve our goals and what their responsibility was in terms of making that happen, and the contribution that they could make towards delivering this critical outcome for Sims.
The carbon price was a new way of helping our people connect to our purpose of delivering a world without waste. We make a lot of asset decisions, such as buying material handlers. They're long-lived pieces of capital equipment. If we buy a diesel one today, we're going to be offsetting that in 2030.”
In this podcast episode, we speak with Blaise Porter, Group Director Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility of Sims Limited, a global leader in metal recycling and circular solutions for technology, as well as an emerging leader in renewable energy. Sims focus on building a sustainable, diverse, and innovative supply chain throughout the country and across the globe.
Blaise shares how important reusing and recycling materials are to prevent emissions from entering the atmosphere and how Sims Limited plays an important role in closing the loop and enabling a circular economy and thus minimising greenhouse gas emissions. Specific topics discussed are:
· Decarbonising steel and aluminium
· Repurposing cloud assets
· Reusing materials such as plastic in cars
· How Sims engaged its internal stakeholders to set ambitious targets
· How Sims set an internal carbon price of $100 by 2030
· How Sims helps its customer reduce their carbon footprint
· How we can divert waste from landfill
