Jack Mansfield - From Math Teacher to Trainer Jack
2026/10/09
Jack Mansfield graduated from Muncie Southside High School in 1969 with the intention of becoming a high school math teacher. An on campus job at Ball State of cleaning and setting up the university gym athletic training room and call for help for a trampoline accident, sent him down a different career path in athletic training. While at Ball State as a student athletic trainer he was with a legendary class, including him, of 4 future Indiana Athletic Assoication Hall of Famers and 5 future Cardinal Sports Medicine Society Ring of Honor members. Quite the group for the future leadership of athletic training in Indiana. He next was teaching math and the athletic trainer at Maconaquah High School, Bunker Hill, IN. When a conversation at the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers Assoication meeting between Ron Sendre and the Head AT at Florida State lead to a phone call that sent Jack and his family to Tallahassee. After receiving his MS degree from Florida State he spent one year back at his Alma Mater, Ball State as the Assistant Athletic Trainer. The desire to be a Head Athletic Trainer lead him to take the job at Ohio Northern University. He was there 7 years. And during a visit back to Indiana he found out about the AT opening at Wabash College in Crawfordsville, IN. He spent the next 22 years there at the only AT at Wabash. While at Wabash he was the president of the Indiana Athletic Trainers Assoication and led the charge for licensure for athletic trainers in the state of Indiana. Then in 2006 Jack left Wabash for Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN to lead the athletic training education program. His leadership fingerprints are all over athletic training institutions from the NATA, GLATA, IATA, White River Park Games, and Olympic Trials. He has been inducted into the Cardinal Sports Medicine Society Ring of Honor, Indiana Athletic Trainers Assoication Hall of Fame and was named a Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Frank O'Bannon. He and his wife, Gayle, reside in Muncie, IN
Jon Wicks - I show up, google me!
2026/04/24
"Showing up is half the battle.", that could be Jon Wicks tag line in his athletic training career. He has parlayed showing up and going to work into working in the SEC, NFL, and currently the Big Ten with the FBS National Champion Indiana Hooisers football team. Starting out at LaVille High School and learning from Ball State AT alum Gary Hall, Jon found his future career in athletic training. A visit to the Ball State campus in the spring of his senior year in high school solidified that path. Jon jumped right in and got to work at BSU his freshman year helping with football and eventually getting into the athletic training education program. From BSU he went out on a limb and arrived at the University of Missouri with no GA position and no place to live, but faith that his knowledge and and work ethic would shine through and the willingness to do things out of his comfort zone made an impression on Director of Sports Medicine and Ball State AT alum Rex Sharp. He eventually came on board as a GA with football and used this experience and his undergraduate intern experience with the Indianapolis Colts to become the full season intern with the Carolina Panthers in 2014. Looking to try to find a position with Division 1 college football, a tip about a position at Indiana University lead Jon to apply for research assistant /athletic trainer with football. It was not a glamours position nor was it a great time with IU football but Jon made the most of it translated it into a full time assistant athletic trainer position with football at IU. A position he has held for the last seven years. Jon resides in Bloomington, Indiana with his dog Mowgli.

Rex Sharp - Hall of Fame relationship builder
2024/11/15
John Wooden once said "Make friendship a fine art." If that is the case then Rex Sharp is Michelangelo. It has never been about where he has been or the athletic training facilities he has designed while at those schools, or the committees he has lead or been on, or the Hall of Fames that he is currently in. It has been about the people he has come in contact with over his 45 year career as an athletic trainer and how he can help them. That career started as a student athletic trainer at New Albany High School, New Albany, IN under NATA HOF member Jerry Bell and Don Ogle. Then in 1975 Rex made the trip to Muncie, IN to attend Ball State University. While at Ball State he won the National Athletic Trainers' Association Robert H. Gunn Scholarship for the nation's outstanding student athletic trainer in 1978. After graduation from Ball State he took a teaching job/athletic trainer at his high school alma mater in New Albany. After two years he decided attend graduate school. His uncle Randy Owsley was the head athletic trainer at Michigan Tech, a NCAA division II school in Houghton, MI. Rex decided to take the offer from Randy and spend 2 years in the upper peninsula getting his master's degree and ton of experience on his own. Next he was on to at the time was Northeast Missouri State, now Truman State. He was the first athletic trainer there and grew the program into a new athletic training facility and two GA athletic trainers. Then a phone call from Jim Dickerson changed the trajectory of his career. Ball State needed a Head Athletic Trainer and they were calling on Rex to lead the program back to prominence. Rex spent 11 years at Ball State and arguably some of the most successful years of the athletic training program. From new facilities, faculty, and athletic training students that have gone on to lead the profession. In 1996 Rex left Ball State for the University of Missouri. He spent 25 years at MIZZOU and again impacted the development of new athletic training facilities, team physician coverage, increasing athletic training staff, and started an integrated health care team to provide mental health support to MIZZOU athletes. Jonathan Allen - AT Pillar Constructor
2024/03/12
Johnathan Allen was curious. He a was curious about his Dad's ACL surgery while Jonathan was in high school. How was he going to get back? Who was going to help him with his rehab? Would he be able to do what he did before? Johnathan was curious and this led him into a career in health care. After high school he had a cup of coffee in Bloomington, IN at Indiana University but after figuring out, like Larry Bird, that a big school is not for everyone he found his way to Ball State in the winter of 2001. He stayed for six years and made an impact on staff and students that were there with him. In looking for his first job he found an opportunity in Connersville, IN at Connersville HS that would be the future trend of all he has done up unto this point in his career. Build a program from the ground up. He spent 6 years at Connersville but his last was out of the AT room and in an office that was not his style. He decided to look outside the box again and apply for a Assistant Professor/Clinical Coordinator/Assistant AT at Union University in Jackson, TN With the help of a fellow BSU AT Alum he landed the job and he started building again. Rex Call - Back where I come from Part 2
2024/03/01
In 1975 a freshman found his way into a call out for student athletic trainers at Ball State University. Being one of the rare people to have an athletic trainer at his high school in the early 1970's he had a small understanding of what athletic trainers did. He started off with a couple of days a week of observation and then spending time with Jim Dickerson in a golf cart during the MAC cross country championship sealed the deal for Rex Call and sent him on a career path that has taken him across the country and then finally back home to DePauw University. He has learned from NATA HOF athletic trainers to teaching his own outstanding students that have impacted the health care profession due to his guidance. This 1979 Ball State graduate (BA) and 1980 University of Arizona graduate (MS) had worked in the NFL, NCAA Div. 1 level, been part of one of the very first industrial athletic training programs and started his own out-patient PT clinic providing AT outreach to local high schools.
