Non-musical history for today: 1919 – Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D. W. Griffith launched United Artists. UA was a venture premised on allowing actors to control their own financial and artistic interests rather than being dependent upon commercial studios. It lasted a good while until 1967 when Transamerica (yep, the life insurance company) bought it. That’s why UA’s films had the Transamerica tower at the beginning. In 1981, MGM bought it. That went on until MGM kind of let it go “out on its own” a few years back when Amazon became the parent company of MGM and folded UA back into MGM. (deep breath) whew! Non-musical history for today: 1887 – In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, the first Groundhog Day is observed. Obviously, not the same groundhog, but that baloney still happens to this day. It is almost the same thing, but in religious terms, it relates to the lore that clear weather on the Christian festival of Candlemas forebodes a prolonged winter. And, if we’re getting to something that I would observe, if anything, would be Imbolc. That happened yesterday. Imbolc falls roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox (the exact mid-point ― the ‘solar imbolc’ ― usually falls on the 3rd or 4th of February) and is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals, along with Bealtaine, Lughnasadh, and Samhain. Non-musical history for today: 1960 – Four black students staged the first of the Greensboro sit-ins at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina. That happened about 25-30 minutes away from where I live. Such a strong and noble jesture. It didn’t go so well that day, I don’t think, but it did help eventually. It certainly led to the department store chain removing its policy of racial segregation in the Southern United States. Shout out to The Greensboro Four (as they would soon be known): Joseph McNeil, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair Jr., and David Richmond! Non-musical history for today: 1661 – Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, is ritually executed more than two years after his death, on the 12th anniversary of the execution of the monarch he himself deposed. I guess it was a delayed FAFO kind of situation. He was exhumed from burial, hanged, and beheaded, with his severed head displayed upon the rooftop of Westminster Palace for at least 23 years. Non-musical history for today: 1521 – The Diet of Worms began, lasting until May 25. Doesn’t that sound delicious!? It doesn’t mean what it says, any of it, other than “of.” A “diet” is a convention or meeting of parliamentary groups or legislature. Worms is pronounced virms and is one of the oldest cities in Northern Europe. So, it was a legislative meeting in a town called Worms. But, really, all that was to say that the most famous thing of this congregation was the fact that Martin Luther was summoned there in order to renounce or reaffirm his views in response to Exsurge Domine from Pope Leo X. Many stories, comics, films, songs, whatever, have come from this. Before Anonymous adopted the Guy Fawkes mask, it was designed by artist David Moore, the illustrator of the graphic novel V for Vendetta by Alan Moore. Non-musical history for today: 1890 – Nellie Bly completed her round-the-world journey in 72 days. She set out to prove (or actually beat) the Phineas Fogg feat in Jules Verne’s Around the World in 80 Days. She did not do it via a hot air balloon. She did it via a steamship. Another woman tried, almost simultanesly to do it going the opposite direction, but Nellie came back first. Doing it in eight days fewer than Fogg. That was a world record until George Train (who had done the trip once before) broke it in 67 days and a third time in 60 days. But he was a man, and he could get away with doing whatever he wanted. Non-musical history for today: 1570 – James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray, regent for the infant King James VI of Scotland, was assassinated by a firearm. Stewart was the half-brother of Mary, Queen of Scots, and was, at times, a supporter of hers. He was the regent of Scotland for his half-nephew, the infant James VI, until his assassination in 1570.
