Ep. 275: How to Let the Bible Actually Change You as a Dad
2026/10/02
What if the Bible was meant to do more than inform you, comfort you, or give you rules to follow?
In this episode of Father On Purpose, Kent and Lawson unpack five different ways people can view Scripture—from dangerous and confusing to informative, comforting, and ultimately transformational.
For Christian dads, that distinction matters. Knowing more Bible verses isn't the same thing as becoming more like Christ. And our kids don't just need to see fathers who know God's Word—they need to see fathers who are continually being changed by it.
Kent and Lawson talk about developing a high view of Scripture, avoiding the trap of using biblical knowledge to become arrogant or argumentative, and learning to approach the Bible as one of God's primary tools for transforming our hearts and minds.
If you want to become a more godly, intentional father and help your children develop a lifelong love for God's Word, this conversation will challenge the way you read the Bible.
In this episode:
• Five ways people view the Bible
• Why biblical knowledge alone isn't enough
• How Scripture transforms a Christian dad
• The danger of treating the Bible like a rule book
• How your relationship with God's Word affects your children
• Why dads should delight in Scripture, not merely study it
Don't just be a father on accident. Be a Father On Purpose.

Ep. 274: Feeling Isolated as a Dad? You Don't Have to Do This Alone (Psalm 146)
2026/09/25
Fatherhood isn't easy, and sometimes it can feel like you're the only dad struggling to get it right. But you're not alone. Across the country and around the world, Christian fathers are learning to lead their families, grow in their faith, and become the dads God has called them to be.
In this episode of Father On Purpose, Kent and Lawson share powerful stories from dads who are experiencing God's work in their lives. From a new father navigating sleepless nights to a dad overcoming addiction and rediscovering his identity in Christ, these testimonies offer a reminder that God is at work in the lives of fathers everywhere.
Drawing from Psalm 146, Kent and Lawson discuss why Christian dads need to slow down, recognize God's faithfulness, and celebrate the victories along the way. They also explore how gratitude, encouragement, and sharing what God has given us can strengthen our families and help other men grow in their faith.
In this episode, you'll discover why you're not alone in your fatherhood journey, how to recognize and celebrate God's work in your life, and practical ways to encourage other dads and point your family toward Christ.
Whether you're a new dad feeling overwhelmed, a father struggling through a difficult season, or a man looking to grow as a biblical leader in your home, this conversation will remind you that God is working—even when you can't see the results.
Don't just be a father on accident. Be a Father On Purpose.

Ep. 273: How to Raise Godly Men in a Confused Culture | Dr. Jerome Gay Jr.
2026/09/18
What does biblical manhood actually look like—and how do you raise sons who understand it in a culture sending them conflicting messages about what it means to be a man?
Pastor and author Jerome Gay Jr. joins Kent and Lawson to talk about raising godly men, emotional maturity, respect, father wounds, and why Jesus—not social media influencers or cultural stereotypes—must be our ultimate model for masculinity.
Jerome shares lessons from his new book, How to Speak Man: Discovering the Respect Languages Men Need, including the five "respect languages" of significance, support, sex, silence, and space. He also explains why men need to learn how to acknowledge and communicate their emotions without being controlled by them.
They discuss how dads can move from constantly telling their kids what they're against to giving them a compelling vision of what they're for, how to teach sons biblical apologetics in the age of smartphones, and why fathers need to be "compelling, not combative" when engaging both their children and the culture.
Jerome also speaks directly to the dad who feels like he has already blown it. Your upbringing, failures, and mistakes may have consequences—but they do not have to permanently define the kind of father you become.
In this episode:
Raising boys into godly men Biblical masculinity and the example of Jesus Helping sons develop emotional maturity Recovering from an unhealthy relationship with your own father The five respect languages men need Creating safety and communication in marriage Teaching kids apologetics and biblical truth Becoming a compelling, not combative, Christian dad What to do when you feel like you've failed as a father
If you want to lead your family with greater courage, tenderness, wisdom, and purpose, this conversation will give you practical biblical tools to start.

Ep. 272: "We Will Serve the Lord" – How to Lead Your Family to Serve God | Joshua 24:15
2026/09/11
"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." It's one of the most familiar verses about family leadership in the Bible—but what does Joshua 24:15 actually require of a Christian dad?
In the final episode of this three-part series, Kent and Lawson unpack the words "we will serve the Lord" and explore what it looks like to make serving God the true center of your home.
Biblical fatherhood isn't simply about doing more Christian activities, volunteering more, or becoming the ultimate authority in your family. It begins with deciding who sits on the throne. When a dad is rooted in God's Word, submitted to Christ, and drawing from the true Source, his leadership, marriage, parenting, finances, priorities, and service can flow from that foundation.
Kent and Lawson discuss the difference between serving from worship and trying to earn spiritual success through activity, why dads shouldn't make themselves the "Supreme Court" of the family, how husbands and wives can pursue God's direction together, and why intimacy with the Father must precede ministry for the Father.
If you want to become a more intentional Christian father and lead your family toward Christ without making everything depend on you, this conversation offers a practical, biblical place to start.
In this episode:
What Joshua 24:15 teaches Christian dads What it really means to "serve the Lord" How fathers can lead without making themselves the ultimate authority Why worship comes before service How God's Word becomes the source for family leadership Leading your wife and children toward a shared faith Serving your family from spiritual overflow instead of emptiness
You're not a father on accident. Go be a father who serves the Lord on purpose.

Ep. 271: "And My House..." – How Christian Dads Build a Godly Home | Joshua 24:15
2026/09/04
"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." It's one of the most familiar Bible verses about family—but what does Joshua 24:15 actually require of a Christian dad?
In part two of this Father On Purpose series, Kent and Lawson focus on the words "and my house." What does it look like to take spiritual responsibility for your family without trying to control every outcome? How do you lead your kids toward God while remembering that ultimately, the Lord is the one who builds the house?
Kent shares a personal story about walking through a difficult season with one of his sons—and how God brought grace and redemption even when Kent's attempts to help didn't always...you guessed it...actually help. The guys also discuss the temptation for dads to take credit for their kids' success, the danger of building an "I love me wall," and why faithful fatherhood is about pointing the glory back to God.
You'll also hear a practical challenge for building deeper relationships with your kids: become a noticer. Notice their character. Notice when they encourage someone, honor their mom, care for a sibling, or demonstrate something that reflects God—and tell them what you see.
If you want to become a more intentional Christian father, strengthen your relationship with your kids, and build a home centered on biblical faith, this episode will give you practical ways to lead your family on purpose.
In this episode:
What "as for me and my house, we..." means for Christian dads Taking responsibility without carrying unnecessary guilt How to spiritually lead your family Why dads shouldn't take credit for their kids' success Trusting God to build your household Recognizing and reinforcing godly character in your children Building intimacy and stronger relationships with your kids Applying Joshua 24:15 to everyday fatherhood
You are not a father on accident. Go be a Father On Purpose.

Ep. 270: "As for Me" - Why Christian Fatherhood Starts With Your Own Faith | Joshua 24:15
2026/08/28
"As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." It's one of the most familiar Bible verses about family—but what if we've been skipping over the most important place...how it starts?
In part one of this three-part Father On Purpose series through Joshua 24:15, Kent and Lawson focus on three simple words: "as for me."
Before a Christian dad can lead his family spiritually, he has to take responsibility for his own walk with God. Kent and Lawson talk about personal faith, private devotion, spiritual leadership, integrity, and the difference between actually following Jesus and simply wanting your family to see you as a godly man.
You'll hear practical questions every dad should wrestle with: Are you pursuing God when nobody is watching? Are you becoming the kind of man you hope your children become? Is your leadership flowing out of genuine faith—or the desire to be noticed?
Because biblical fatherhood doesn't begin with fixing your kids. It begins with allowing God to work on you. If you want to become a stronger Christian father, lead your family with greater purpose, and build a faith your children can actually follow, start here.
Joshua 24:15: "But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
You're not a father on accident. Go be a Father On Purpose.

Ep 269: How to Be a Wiser, More Confident Dad | Dr. Mark Moore
2026/08/21
What does it actually take to become a wise, confident Christian dad—especially if you didn't have a great example growing up?
Dr. Mark Moore, author of Wisdom 52: A Fifteen Minute Daily Guide Through Proverbs, joins Kent Evans and Lawson Brown for a practical conversation about biblical wisdom, fatherhood, insecurity, the father wound, and leading your family well.
Mark shares openly about growing up with an imperfect father, struggling for decades with insecurity, and learning that professional success can never replace confidence rooted in God the Father. He also explains why dads need other godly men around them, how the wisdom of Proverbs is meant to be lived rather than simply learned, and why your greatest work will rarely be the work you do at your job.
You'll hear practical encouragement for dads who want to:
Overcome insecurity and "imposter syndrome" as a father Break unhealthy generational patterns Develop biblical wisdom and discernment Build stronger relationships with sons and daughters Stay connected with adult children Prioritize marriage and family over career Understand God as Father more deeply Become the kind of man their family can trust and follow
Mark also gives dads a simple challenge: tell your son you're proud of him, tell your daughter she's beautiful and worth fighting for, and make sure your wife knows she is a priority.
Because your greatest work isn't at work.
It's at home.
If you want to grow as a Christian father, husband, and man of God, this episode will give you biblical truth and practical wisdom you can put into action today. Learn it. Live it. Lead from a position of security—and go be a Father On Purpose.

Ep. 268: 1 Timothy for Dads - Week 6
2026/08/14
In this episode of Father On Purpose, Kent and Lawson wrap up their walk through 1 Timothy with a practical look at what chapter 6 teaches Christian dads about contentment, money, godliness, spiritual discipline, and legacy.
Paul tells Timothy to "fight the good fight of the faith" and to "guard what has been entrusted to you." For fathers, those commands hit close to home. What are you fighting for? What has God entrusted to you? And what are your kids learning from the things that consume your time, attention, and conversation?
Kent and Lawson unpack the tension between godly ambition and worldly discontentment, why the Bible does not teach that money itself is evil, and how dads can pursue righteousness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness without falling into either passive Christianity or self-reliance. They also explore the relationship between God's grace and personal discipline, and why becoming a godly man requires both dependence on the Holy Spirit and intentional action.
The conversation ultimately turns toward fatherhood and legacy: What are you writing on the hearts of your children through the way you live today? If you could leave your kids one final letter, what would you want them to remember?
If you're a Christian father who wants to lead your family biblically, grow in your faith, study the Bible more effectively, and become a more intentional dad, this episode is for you.
In this episode:
What 1 Timothy 6 teaches dads about contentment "The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil" explained Godly ambition vs. worldly success How Christian men can fight the right battles Grace, discipline, and the work of the Holy Spirit How to study Scripture by using Scripture to interpret Scripture Building a biblical legacy for your children What it means to guard what God has entrusted to you
You weren't made to drift through fatherhood. Guard what's been entrusted to you—and live like a Father On Purpose.

Ep. 267: 1 Timothy For Dads - Week 5
2026/08/07
What does real godliness look like in the everyday life of a Christian dad?
In this episode of the Father On Purpose Podcast, Kent and Lawson continue their study through 1 Timothy by unpacking chapter 5. They explore how biblical character is revealed through the way fathers treat aging parents, widows, women, church leaders, and the people closest to them.
Lawson shares honestly about the challenges of caring for his aging mother, the strain it placed on his family, and the unexpected ways God used that difficult season to strengthen his marriage. Kent and Lawson also discuss why honor begins at home, why character matters more than talent, and how your children learn to treat others by watching the way you live.
You'll also learn a practical Bible study method for understanding difficult or seemingly contradictory passages: zoom out, study the wider context, and let Scripture interpret Scripture.
In this episode:
How Christian dads can honor and care for aging parents What 1 Timothy 5 teaches about widows and the church Why the way men speak about women reveals their character How fathers model biblical honor for their children The importance of encouraging pastors and church leaders How to study confusing Bible passages in context Why real godliness must show up at home
Your children are watching how you treat people. You are not a father on accident. Go be a Father On Purpose.

Ep. 266: 1 Timothy For Dads - Week 4
2026/07/31
Your children will learn far more from the life you live than from the lessons you teach.
In part four of our six-part journey through 1 Timothy, Kent Evans and Lawson Brown explore the practical fatherhood lessons found in 1 Timothy 4. They discuss how dads can guard their families from deception, resist small compromises, grow in godliness and lead by example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity.
You'll also hear why your limitations may help clarify God's calling for your life, how to turn 1 Timothy 4:12 into a simple family devotional and why your spiritual progress matters to everyone watching you—especially your children.
This episode will help Christian dads:
Recognize the lies competing for their family's attention Understand why small compromises can lead to larger failures Prioritize godliness over outward success Lead their children through personal example Use 1 Timothy 4:12 for a practical family Bible study Embrace both their gifts and limitations as part of God's calling
Your kids are watching your progress, your failures, your repentance and your faith. Take your role seriously, stay rooted in Scripture and go be a father on purpose.

Ep. 265: 1 Timothy For Dads - Week 3
2026/07/24
What does 1 Timothy 3 have to say to everyday dads?
In this episode of the Father On Purpose Podcast, Kent and Lawson unpack Paul's qualifications for church leaders and explain why they also provide a powerful picture of biblical fatherhood. Traits like self-control, gentleness, faithfulness, hospitality, integrity, and managing your household well are not just standards for pastors and deacons—they are qualities every Christian dad should pursue.
Kent and Lawson also discuss what happens when dads fall short, why failure does not automatically disqualify you from leading your family, and how God's grace empowers men to repent, grow, and keep moving forward. You'll learn how to study Scripture more carefully, accept honest feedback, lead without relying on your own strength, and become the kind of man your wife, children, church, and community can trust.
If you want to become a more intentional Christian father, lead your home well, and grow in biblical character, this conversation through 1 Timothy 3 will challenge and encourage you.
In this episode:
What 1 Timothy 3 teaches about biblical leadership Why church leadership qualifications matter for dads How to manage your household well The difference between making a mistake and living in a pattern of sin Why Christian fathers must lead through the power of the Holy Spirit How to respond when you fail as a husband or father Practical ways to become a better student of the Bible

About our hosts:
Kent Evans is the Executive Director and co-founder of Manhood Journey, a ministry that helps dads become disciple-makers. After a twenty-year career as a business leader, he embarked on biblical Fatherhood ministry projects. He's appeared on television, radio, web outlets and podcasts. He's spoken at parenting and men's events, and authored four books. The first, Wise Guys: Unlocking Hidden Wisdom from the Men Around You, was written to help men learn how to find mentors and wise counsel. The latest, Don't Bench Yourself: How to Stay in the Game Even When You Want to Quit, aims to help dads stay present in their roles as fathers and husbands even when they feel like giving up. Kent's life has been radically affected by godly mentors and his lovely wife, April. They have been married thirty years and have five sons and one daughter-in-law. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky.
Lawson Brown is husband to his high school sweetheart, a father of two young adult daughters, has been a business leader since 1995, and is a former Marine. He served as a small group leader for teenage boys for many years, helped start the Christian media ministry City on a Hill Productions, then later Sanctuary – a new church in Kennesaw, GA – where he served as its leader for Men's Ministry. Lawson's journey of faith has always been centered in a grounding from his wife, Audrey, and supported throughout by many men whom he's found as brothers along the way. His family is nearing an empty nest phase and has recently relocated to the Florida Gulf Coast beaches area.
