1972: When Progressive Rock Ruled The World [Episode 180]
2024/02/17
Kevan Furbank is the author of 1972: When Progressive Rock Ruled The World. The year 1972 was when Progressive Rock came of age, when bands and artists still revered today produced some of their most ground-breaking, inventive, and enduring musical creations. Furbank looks at some of the artists and albums that made 1972 such a watershed in musical achievement. He follows their development from the first tentative notes and chords to the full-blown recordings that, more than 50 years later, are still seen as the masterpieces of the genre, and the gold standard by which all Progressive Rock is judged. He’s here to share what's inside his brand new book and the legendary bands covered including Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd and more. The Post-Punk Exorcism of The Wild Swans' Paul Simpson [Episode 179]
2024/02/14
Paul Simpson's story is one wild ride and it's all revealed in his memoir titled Revolutionary Spirit: A Post-Punk Exorcism. Part memoir, part social history, Revolutionary Spirit is the poignant, often hilarious story of a cult Liverpool musician’s scenic route to fame and artistic validation. If Morrissey was the Oscar Wilde of the 1980s indie scene, Simpson was its William Blake, a self destructive genius so lost in mystical visions of a new Arcadia that he couldn’t meet the rent. Simpson’s career goes back to 1976, when he finds himself at the birth of Liverpool’s second great musical explosion. Along the way, he co-founds and christens the neo-psychedelic pop group The Teardrop Explodes, shares a flat with a teenage Courtney Love, and forms The Wild Swans, who burn bright and brief, in the process recording one of the all-time great cult hit singles, ‘Revolutionary Spirit’. Marriage, fatherhood, and tropical illness follow, interspersed with artistic collaborations with Bill Drummond and members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, among others. Eventually Simpson discovers that seven thousand miles away, in the Philippines, he is considered a musical god. Presidential suites, armed guards, police escorts—you couldn’t make it up, and, incredibly, he doesn’t need to. Here’s here today to tell his story. The Remarkable Life Of Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House, Fleetwood Mac) [Episode 178]
2024/02/07
Jeff Apter is the author of Don’t Dream It’s Over: The Remarkable Life Of Neil Finn. Don't Dream It's Over is the first biography to focus exclusively on Neil Finn, the man who wrote the timeless hits of Split Enz and Crowded House. In February 1980, 21-year-old Neil Mullane Finn penned the hit song 'I Got You' for Kiwi band Split Enz, co-founded by his older brother Tim. Over five decades, Neil created multiple hits for Split Enz, his band Crowded House and as a solo artist including “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, “Better Be Home Soon”, “One Step Ahead”, and “Into Temptation”. In 2018, he added one more impressive gig to his resume by joining Fleetwood Mac. Despite his success, Neil faced various challenges. He’s had conflicts with his brother Tim and had to cope with the tragic death of Crowded House bandmate Paul Hester. He had tough early days with Split Enz in England, surviving on welfare. With a Catholic upbringing and a 40-year-long marriage to his wife Sharon, Neil's life has not been easy. Yet his story remains one of the most inspiring musical sagas in recent history. It’s all covered here in Jeff’s new book and he's here to share what's inside if his latest book! The Lyrical Art Of Bob Dylan [Episode 174]
2024/01/17
Author Michael Gray is this episode’s guest to talk about the brand new three-part 50th anniversary edition of his highly acclaimed book Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan. The first edition of Song & Dance Man was the first book to seriously examine the work of Bob Dylan, originating the realm of scholarship that put Dylan on the road to the Nobel prize. Fifty-years and hundreds of Dylan books later, many still consider it one of the very best: Rolling Stone called it “Monumental, endlessly illuminating.” The original Song & Dance Man released in 1972 covered Dylan’s work through 1970’s Self Portrait, but was expanded in a new edition in 1982, and again in 2000 – growing to over 900 pages and covering Dylan’s work through 1997’s Time Out Of Mind. But Song & Dance Man has been out of print for over a decade, during which time Bob Dylan won a Nobel Prize for Literature, continued delivering critically lauded records, and earned a new generation of fans while sustaining older ones in his seventh decade as an artist. The 50th Anniversary Series puts every word of Song & Dance Man back into print, but in an accessible three-volume format. Michael Gray is here to tell us about the all-new format and what’s inside all three volumes. The Untold Story Of Beatles' Roadie Mal Evans with Author Ken Womack [Episode 170]
2023/12/20
Ken Womack's latest book titled Living The Beatles Legend: The Untold Story Of Mal Evens. This is the first full-length biography of Mal Evans, the Beatles’ beloved friend, confidant, and roadie. A towering figure in horn-rimmed glasses, Evans loomed large in the Beatles’ story, contributing at times as a performer and sometime lyricist, while struggling mightily to protect his beloved “boys.” He was there for the whole of the group’s remarkable, unparalleled story: from the Shea Stadium triumph through the creation of the timeless cover art for Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the famous Let It Be rooftop concert. Leaving a stable job as telecommunications engineer to serve as road manager for this fledgling band, Mal was the odd man out from the start—older, married with children, and without any music business experience. And yet he threw himself headlong into their world, traveling across the globe and making himself indispensable. Womack is here to talk about Mal’s time with The Beatles, what he did after the breakup of the band, and his mysterious death in January of 1976.
