Why ERP Implementations Fail (And What You Can Do About It) with Jim Leone, Ep #43
2026/04/28
ERP implementations are among the most complex, expensive, and high-stakes projects a company can undertake. Yet time and again, organizations invest millions of dollars without investing in the right things and the consequences don't show up until after go-live. The warning signs are almost always there from the start, and the reasons for failure are often not what you would expect.
In this episode, Jim Leone joins us to break down exactly why ERP implementations fail and what leaders can do to prevent it. Drawing on over 20 years of experience across the Department of Defense, chemical, and life sciences industries, Jim shares the hard-won lessons behind executive sponsorship, testing culture, managing resistors, and what happens when companies try to do too much with too little budget.
I have seen entire implementation teams leave because the go-live was underfunded. – Jim Leone
You'll want to hear this episode if you are interested in… 0:01:41 — From Defense Systems to ERP: Jim shares how his first job working on Department of Defense systems, where failure was simply not an option, shaped his entire approach to ERP implementation testing.
0:03:13 — The Most Common Reasons Implementations Fail: Jim walks through the list: lack of visible executive sponsorship, inadequate training, and poor testing discipline-- and why body language in a testing meeting tells you everything.
0:05:40 — Pulling Your Best People and Backfilling the Gaps: Why you must dedicate your subject matter experts fully to the project, and how to bring in outside contractors to backfill finance and IT roles so the business keeps running.
0:07:46 — Spotting and Managing Resistors: How to identify resistors at the kickoff session, why telling people what's in it for them is your best tool, and what to do when someone just won't come around.
0:12:46 — What Underfunding Really Costs You: Jim explains why treating an ERP as a low-cost initiative is a guarantee of failure. He tells the story of an entire implementation team that walked out the door three months after go-live.
0:17:37 — The Conversation Nobody Has Before a Project Kicks Off: Why first-time leaders need an advisor or coach to help them understand what's normal, what's not, and how to stay the course when an implementation feels like a pressure cooker.
0:19:39 — What Jim Wishes He Had Known: If you have executive sponsorship, training, testing, the right people, money, and a realistic timeline, everything is going to be okay. You may not get them all, but you need the majority.
About Jim Leone Jim Leone is a senior enterprise leader with over 20 years of experience leading ERP implementations, finance transformations, and dashboard and reporting initiatives across the Department of Defense, chemical, and life sciences industries. Known for bridging the gap between Finance, Accounting, and IT, Jim has led major SAP implementations at Fortune 500 companies and is recognized for building the people, processes, and systems that make complex transformations succeed.

Scaling Beyond Tools: The Multiplier Effect in Retail Tech with Sashi Arumugam, Ep#42
2026/02/24
In the fast-paced world of retail, it is easy to get distracted by "shiny" new technologies. But what happens when these expensive tools fail to deliver a return on investment? Many growth-stage companies struggle to compete with the "Amazon standard" while facing eroding profit margins and labor shortages.
In this episode, Sashi Arumugam joins us to explain why scaling isn't actually about having the most tools: it's about the synergy between people, processes, and technology. We dive into the realities of warehouse automation, the "Ferrari engine" analogy for legacy systems, and how to ensure your technology is a revenue driver rather than a cost center.
When you want to scale, you have to make sure that you have the right people with the right skill set so that they can do the job. It's all about the multiplier effect. You have to create a team in such a way that they can do their job without you being needed for every single thing. – Sashi Arumugam
You'll want to hear this episode if you are interested in…
0:01:42 — From Developer to Business Leader: Sashi shares his journey from a technical developer to a global leader, and why understanding the "business problem" is more important than knowing the code.
0:06:58 — The "Ferrari Engine" Problem: Sashi shares a powerful analogy about the dangers of dropping advanced AI into an "old car" (legacy systems). He explains why you must look at the full, end-to-end picture to ensure your new technology actually delivers results.
0:10:48 — Competing with the Amazon Standard: How growth-stage companies can protect margins by using technology to understand the "voice of the customer" and reduce the high cost of returns.
0:13:20 — Automation with a Human Touch: A look at how "goods-to-person" systems and robotic arms are helping warehouse workers by taking on physically taxing tasks, allowing humans to focus on higher-level operations.
0:16:24 — Cutting Through the AI Noise: Sashi discusses what is delivering value today, like SEO-optimized content creation, versus the current security and ROI challenges of AI.
0:19:13 — The Scaling Secret: The Multiplier Effect: Why true scaling happens when you move from being a "doer" to a "coach," building a team that functions independently of the leader.
0:24:31 — What Leaders Must Stop Doing: Why moving from a "growth" mindset to a "scale" mindset requires leaders to get out of the weeds and stop micromanaging.
About Sashi Arumugam
Sashi Arumugam is a supply chain technology leader with over two decades of experience driving digital transformation. He has led mission-critical Warehouse Management System (WMS) transformations at a leading billion-dollar fashion retail brand, supporting over 100 stores and nationwide wholesale distribution. An Unbreakable Spirit: Andrea Samson's Journey for a Life-Saving Kidney, Ep#40
2025/08/18
This episode of Tech Talent Today is a little different, but it's a topic deeply personal and incredibly important to our community. We welcome Andrea Samson, the daughter of our very first guest, CIO Juliette Samson. Andrea is a first responder, an EMT, and an inspiring individual who has faced a lifelong battle with kidney disease. In 2009, she received a kidney transplant from her father, but is now once again in need of a life-saving kidney. Andrea joins us to share her story of resilience, her dedication to helping others, and how we can all come together to help her in her search for a donor.
"I think one of the struggles of any chronic illness is that it tends to consume your life, not just seeing doctors, but all the medicines you have to take and all of the different things that you have to deal with every day that just maybe a normal person doesn't have to think about. So I wake up with a lot less energy. I start with about a 20% battery, and I have to make that last a whole day, and I have to be very careful about how I choose to spend my energy every single day. And with that in mind, I do have these rather ambitious goals in my life, and so I have to prioritize my health, but also find ways to keep working towards the goals that I have." - Andrea Samson

0:11:47 — The Mystery of Eastern Medicine: Andrea's unconventional path to acupuncture and her goal of integrating it with Western medicine to improve the lifespan of organs.
0:18:36 — The Donor Process, Demystified: Andrea breaks down the process of becoming a living donor, clarifying that the donor and recipient teams are separate and that all donor expenses are covered.
This episode is a testament to the power of the human spirit and an urgent call to action. We encourage all listeners to learn more about Andrea's story and consider if you might be the person to give the gift of life.
About Andrea Samson:
Andrea is a beautiful and ambitious young woman who, at the age of 30, is in desperate need of a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, she has suffered with ill health throughout her young life. At the age of three, Andrea was diagnosed with MPGN kidney disease and began a battle that she still fights today.
In 2009, Andrea received a kidney transplant from her father, but Andrea continues to face struggles and recently her kidney started to fail and over time it is losing its function. Despite her ongoing illness, which often kept her out of school, Andrea remained a top-performing student in high school and was ultimately accepted into a prestigious college in the northeast, where she continued to excel as an RA, Ted Talker, Private Tutor in math, and local EMT First Responder.
She is currently finishing a Master's degree in Acupuncture after receiving her BS in Biology at Lafayette College. Andrea is still hoping to enter medical school upon graduating from Acupuncture School to ultimately have a practice of integrated Eastern and Western medicine. She wants to be a doctor so she can improve or help save the lives of other people who suffer from chronic and/or life-threatening diseases, as she does.

And what I tell my staff all the time is I don't need you to agree with me all the time. Unlock The Hidden Potential of Neurodiversity with Jeff Miller, Ep #30
2023/12/05
Did you know that over 25% of today's adult population is neurodiverse? And yet, many businesses continue to miss the opportunity to leverage this untapped talent pool fully. Joining us today is special guest Jeff Miller, proud CEO and founder of Potentia Workforce. Potentia is transforming organizations by enhancing their recruiting and retention metrics. This transformation is achieved through the utilization of the talents of skilled yet often overlooked neurodistinct individuals. Potentia employs their neurodiversity training and recruitment program, STARS, along with their workforce engagement and retention program, EMPOWER.
Throughout this discussion, we delve into Jeff's personal understanding of neurodiversity. As the parent of an autistic teenager, Jeff embarked on a quest to comprehend how his son's life would unfold as an adult. Jeff shares the remarkable return on investment that companies experience when hiring neurodiverse individuals, emphasizing that it extends beyond mere hiring. He guides us through the process of creating neurodiversity-friendly workplaces and highlights the tangible results in employee retention. Additionally, Jeff underscores the value of adopting a strength-based approach when onboarding talent. So, if you're ready to elevate your business, hiring, and retention strategies, hit play now and unlock the power of neurodiversity in the workforce.

· Becoming an ND-friendly organization and the best interview practices for onboarding talent [17.37]
· How neurodiversity is strengthening organizational cultures [25.00]
· The strength base approach: Focusing on strengths rather than weaknesses [30.58]
"Every city in the world that we've seen so far has the same demographic challenge and opportunity, which is lots of underutilized, underserved, highly talented individuals who may not interview well in the traditional sense but could be great employees if you can figure out a way to recruit them, and to manage them effectively." – Jeff Miller.
Supercharge Your Organization (No Matter The Size)
In this episode, Jeff paints a powerful picture of how organizations can supercharge their organization by leveraging a neurodiverse talent pool. Many companies across the globe continue to navigate their way through the "great resignation", struggling to hire and retain employees. Yet, it's revealed that neurodistinct employees have an impressive 96% average retention rate, making them a valuable investment for companies.
Jeff sheds light on the diverse motivations that drive companies to embrace neurodiversity. Larger companies aim to harness the power of diverse talents, while smaller companies seek solutions to pressing workforce challenges like recruitment and retention. As organizations strive to build diverse and inclusive workplaces, Jeff's insights emphasize that regardless of a company's size, embracing diversity is a powerful step forward, supported by a wealth of statistics and insights.
Seeing Beyond IT and Panel Interviews
Contrary to common assumptions, neurodistinct talent is not limited to IT roles. Potentia has successfully placed candidates in diverse fields such as marketing, HR, and banking. This highlights the immense potential of neurodivergent individuals and the need for companies to consider their abilities across various functions.
Did you know that many neurodiverse individuals often conceal their condition or hesitate to disclose it, driven by past negative experiences and fears of professional repercussions? To foster a neurodiversity-friendly environment, companies must take concrete steps. Jeff suggests a shift away from traditional panel interviews, which can heighten anxiety for neurodistinct individuals, in favor of mini projects that replicate work-related tasks. This approach not only provides a more accurate assessment of candidates but also cultivates a welcoming atmosphere, ultimately helping employers find the ideal role for each team member. Tune in to discover how you can create an inclusive and supportive workplace that maximizes neurodiverse potential.
