*There is a slight sound issue at the beginning of this ep but it only lasts 30 seconds, so don't worry - we had a bit of a recording issue. In our third Halloween special, we welcome back friend of the podcast, John from NorthEdinburgh Nightmares, for the third time!  We talk all ghosty things that go bump in the night, along with chat about John's new upcoming book - it's his 6th book. If you'd like to find out more about his books, head to the link at the bottom of our notes  We also talk about John's gift for scaring young children in the woods!  ( Not as bad as it sounds)  Making a cup of tea for a ghost and "scary biscuits". Screaming houses and Steve Coogan, and you've really got to listen just to see the moment John actually broke Cheryl!  (Don't worry, I'll have her fixed again by the next episode!) To find out about John's Halloween event happening on Hallows Eve along with all of the other events he has happening that week and his ghost walks go follow him at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/55014684813?aff=ebdsshcopyurl And check out his website at https://northedinburghnightmares.wordpress.com/ And on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/north_edinburgh_nightmares/ Theme Music Vampire Strut by Joybean @AudioJungle Follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mumsmysteriesandmurder/ You can also support the pod and buy us a coffee at https://ko-fi.com/mumsmysteriesandmurder And we would love it if you could give us a cheeky review & subscribe to make sure you don't miss an episode.    Send us a text - we'd love to hear your thoughts about this episode & if there are any cases youd like us to cover please get in touch

In our second Halloween special, we talk to Joss Camerson - also known as the Sea Shanty Queen about the origins of sea shanties, whether Robson Green is actually a dick in real life and her stint on Neighbours!  But it wouldn't be a Halloween special without some creepiness, so we also talk about Spirit Guides, a Banshee story that left us both pretty much speechless and Joss's first book called The Callbearers. She has got to be one of the most fascinating guests we've ever had on the podcast - we might have to get her back because we've only just scratched the surface! Welcome to our first spooky season episode & who better to kick off with than one of our good friends and podcast favourite, Wayne from Eerie Edinburgh, talking all things ghosty in the run up to his new book out in time for Halloween called The Night Shift - the title is creepy enough for me. Of course Wayne brings the usual creep - the sleep paralysis demon story is enough to make you sleep with the light on for pretty much forever... and lots of other ghosty, lighthearted chat that you've come to expect from our regular episodes. The event I finally remembered that we talk about in the ep is actually part of a free, two-day (October 30th & 31st 2026) Halloween exhibition at The Undercroft below Edinburgh’s St Vincent’s Church. Visitors will explore the semi-dark gallery space in torchlight and discover the artworks lurking within the shadows.  It looks amazing, to find out more head to https://richardwiseman.wordpress.com/ghosts-a-halloween-exhibition-in-a-creepy-edinburgh-crypt/ To find out more about Wayne and Eerie Edinburgh we love this article written by our other favourite ghosty guide John Tantalon check out https://www.spookyisles.com/wayne-gilbert-eerie-edinburgh-interview/ And we urge you to check out Eerie Edinburgh - the Youtube channel is exceptional, for the full effect head to https://eerieedinburgh.com/  where you can also find out more about Wayne's previous and upcoming books Episode Hosted & Researched by  Cheryl Lessels & Marti Jeremiah-Shelley Theme Music Vampire Strut by Joybean @AudioJungle Follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mumsmysteriesandmurder/ You can also support the pod and buy us a coffee at https://ko-fi.com/mumsmysteriesandmurder And we would love it if you could give us a cheeky review & subscribe to make sure you don't miss an episode.    Send us a text - we'd love to hear your thoughts about this episode & if there are any cases youd like us to cover please get in touch

Trigger warning: This episode contains discussion of the neglect, abuse and murder of a vulnerable young adult. If you're not in the right place to listen to this episode, please give this one a miss.    In this episode, Cheryl tells the sad story of the murder of Margaret Fleming in the village of Inverkip in Scotland.   Margaret was just 19 years old and a vulnerable adult in need of support when she was last seen publicly in December 1999, her body has never been found. She was eventually identified through dental records. Her television had been left on, and she was surrounded by unopened Christmas presents. There was a documentary made about her with the help of her friends - it's brilliant, sad and disturbing, and you won't forget it long after youve watched it.  It's not available in the UK on Netflix anymore but might be available on the US Netflix.  To watch the trailer head to: https://watchdocumentaries.com/dreams-of-a-life/ Episode Hosted & Researched by Marti Jeremiah-Shelley & Cheryl Lessels Theme Music Vampire Strut by Joybean @AudioJungle Follow us on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mumsmysteriesandmurder/ You can also support the pod and buy us a coffee at https://ko-fi.com/mumsmysteriesandmurder And we would love it if you could give us a cheeky review & subscribe to make sure you don't miss an episode.    Send us a text - we'd love to hear your thoughts about this episode & if there are any cases youd like us to cover please get in touch

In this episode, Marti takes us to Australia and the devastating 2024 Bondi Junction shopping centre attack. We look at the story of Joel Cauchi, the 40-year-old man who killed six people and injured ten others in just a matter of minutes, and the questions that followed about his deteriorating mental health, missed opportunities for intervention and why the majority of his victims were women. We also head down the very dark rabbit hole of incel culture — where it came from, how online communities became increasingly misogynistic, and the violence that has been linked to the ideology. Was Cauchi's attack connected to misogyny or incel ideology, or was this the devastating result of severe mental illness and a system that failed to intervene? Trigger Warning - This episode contains themes of child sexual abuse and the murder of children. In our SECOND episode of the month! Cheryl tells the story of Robert Black, the Scottish serial killer and paedophile whose horrifying murderous reign began in the 70s and continued throughout the 1980s.    We also chat about the Edinburgh Fringe, what our Mastermind Subject would be- you'll never guess! There's a lot going on in this episode so strap yourself in! Today - if you're listening on the day this drops we're celebrating five years of Mums Mysteries & Murder... with our 70th episode and we've got a big announcement! Before we get into the mystery, we're sharing some exciting news about the future of the podcast!  Then we're heading deep into the Australian Outback to investigate one of Australia's strangest unsolved mysteries: The Marree Man. Stretching over 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) across a remote desert plateau, this enormous geoglyph appeared without warning in 1998. Visible only from the air! How was something this enormous carved into one of the most isolated parts of Australia without anyone noticing? Was it an elaborate art project? A military prank? The work of an eccentric artist? Or is there another explanation entirely? Sources for this episode are: The Australian Times Australia's Dessert Enigma - discovery.com  In this episode, we also chat about what we were doing in 1998, more cruise chat, aliens and crop circles and Cheryl drops a surprising story about her past!  Thank you for being part of our first five years, staying with us and supporting the pod.  We genuinely couldn't have done it without you. Trigger warning: dismemberment is mentioned in this episode   In 1935, in the town of Moffat, a young woman was out on a walk with her Mother and noticed a bundle wrapped in cloth, which on first glance looked like nothing much, but on further investigation, there were over 70 different body parts wrapped in cloth and newspaper scattered all around the area. Many historians describe it as one of the first truly modern forensic investigations.    We also talk about what were watching - SO MUCH! The problem with changing your name to something difficult to pronounce & many, many penpal stories. * This episode has a few audio issues, but we know you dont listen to MM&M for perfection so we know you'll love it regardless.   This is down to the fact probably that it was not edited by our beloved editor Erin. Early on the morning of New Year's Day in the Sydney suburb of Chatswood in 1963  2 young boys out looking for golf balls got more than they bargained for when they discovered the half-naked body of a man partially covered by his clothes which had been thrown over the top of him alongside a square of carpet beside a river in a secluded tree-lined area. At first, the boys thought he was a drunk party leftover from New Year's, but soon discovered things were slightly more sinister. We bet you'll never guess whodunit! This is a particularly intriguing, very well-known case in Australia with some very interesting characters. Come down a rabbit hole with us and listen to the intriguing tale of the Rabbit Wars of St Andrews as told by Cheryl!  This story takes us all the way back to 1797 and includes no less than 900 rabbits and the selling of the famous St Andrews Golf Course.   Trigger warning - Rabbits will get hurt in this episode  You might have guessed, but this is a slightly lighter episode than our recent episodes.   In the words of Cheryl  "It's Downton Abbey with significantly more rabbits!" We also talk about what makes a great true crime podcast. We'd also love to hear your thoughts on this, if you'd like to let us know what you look for. And, we chat childhood traumas! This month, Marti is covering the Luna Park Ghost Train fire in Sydney in 1979, it's one we've wanted to cover for so long because it's not covered by many podcasts, and it's such a sad, interesting story with so many layers..  We also talk about theme park disasters and rollercoasters, Cheryl's disastrous note-taking in the dark, how we're such babies when it comes to scary shit and horror & childrens tv in the 80s - and yes we talk commercials again!  Sources for this episode are:  2021 Documentary - Exposed 3-part documentary The Ghost Train Fire UK Daily Mail  ABC News  Hosted & Researched by Marti Jeremiah-Shelley & Cheryl Lessels Edited & Produced by Erin Ferguson https://www.instagram.com/erinfaudio/ Since 2023 ( earlier episodes are badly edited by us!) It's Cheryl's first story on the podcast, and she goes in hard, covering the horrible disappearance and death of Corrie McKeague in 2016 in Dunfermline, Scotland. Sources for this episode: BBC News  FindCorrie.co.uk The Guardian newspaper website  Wikipedia  We also cover vintage commercials, what we've been watching ( as always! Some things never change! ), the history of Dunfermline, Pokémon adventures, the wrong pronunciation of words, in our opinion, and what was going on in the world in 2016.  Quite a big year as it turns out!
