We've reached the Sword of God and the Bonfires of the Vanities - yes, there was more than one.  Also, Savonarola must have wondered why he couldn't keep his big mouth shut.  He lives to regret it.....or rather, he doesn't.    Join our Patreon family for yet more episodes and to join our Discord - Tudoriferous | creating a Podcast discussing the great, good and mad Tudor Era | Patreon   Relevant Episodes - Search : charles VIII part two | Tudoriferous Pico Part Two | Tudoriferous on Patreon Piero de' Medici, Part Two | Tudoriferous on Patreon

‘The Italian Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola was a reactionary zealot and bigoted theocrat who vehemently opposed the humanism of the Florentine Renaissance.' Well, maybe.  But first he had to be born and grow up.   Relevant Episode - S1 052 - Pope Alexander - Part Three | Tudoriferous 5. It's time to shift our perspective. For so many previous episodes, the Ottomans have been a lurking threat, a subject of many, many failed attempts at crusades, and a constant reminder that Christendom was completely incapable of getting their act together. So why didn't the Ottoman Sultan, Bayezid II, take advantage of Western European disunity and triumphantly conquer the Christian kingdoms?   I mean, he'd like to, I'm sure. He just has to deal with these other borders first. And his family. And the religious establishment. And the popular preachers. And the soldiers. And his family, again. This is all starting to sound very familiar...   You can find images and a full bibliography on our website - Episode Information – Tudoriferous Join our Patreon family for yet more episodes and to join our Discord - Tudoriferous | creating a Podcast discussing the great, good and mad Tudor Era | Patreon   Relevant Episodes - Cameo 25 - Prince Djem   Image: Sultan Bayezid II "the Holy" (Veli). Alexander is more and more under Cesare's thumb.  Is his son making him do things that a pope should never even consider or is that Pope Julius stirring?  Whichever it is, Cesare's very expensive hobby is emptying the papal treasury. Last time we did Alexander he wasn't Tudorlicious.  Will that all change this time around?   Join our Patreon family for yet more episodes and to join our Discord - Tudoriferous | creating a Podcast discussing the great, good and mad Tudor Era | Patreon   Relevant Episode - Lucrezia Borgia - Part Two | Tudoriferous on Patreon

In this episode, after many promises, we actually meet Savonarola.  Despite much provocation, Alexander's reaction to him is really quite surprising.   Join our Patreon family for yet more episodes and to join our Discord - Tudoriferous | creating a Podcast discussing the great, good and mad Tudor Era | Patreon   Relevant Episode - Cameo 67 - Johannes Burchard | Tudoriferous

Charles VIII invades Italy.....again.  What will Alexander do?  Stand up to him with the full weight of the Church behind him?  Or will he cower in a fortress like a gibbering wreck?   Join our Patreon family for yet more episodes and to join our Discord - Tudoriferous | creating a Podcast discussing the great, good and mad Tudor Era | Patreon   Relevant Episode:  Search : Pope Julius Part Two | Tudoriferous Search : king frederick of naples | Tudoriferous Search : king ferrantino of naples | Tudoriferous Search : charles viii part two | Tudoriferous Who Killed Juan Borja | Tudoriferous Search : felice della rovere | Tudoriferous Caterina Sforza - Part Three | Tudoriferous on Patreon

Our first attempt at  Alexander wasn't as in depth as we would now do, so I wanted to give him another go. How did this man, whom many would have said was utterly unsuited to the religious life at all, become pope - apart from the obvious?   Join our Patreon family for yet more episodes and to join our Discord - Tudoriferous | creating a Podcast discussing the great, good and mad Tudor Era | Patreon   Relevant Episodes - Search : king ferrante of naples | Tudoriferous Search : king alfonso of naples | Tudoriferous Search : prince djem | Tudoriferous Search : pope sixtus | Tudoriferous Search : pope innocent | Tudoriferous Lucrezia Borgia Part 1 | Tudoriferous on Patreon Piero de' Medici | Tudoriferous on Patreon

Recently, on Patreon, we've been looking at Russia, and particularly the life and times of Grand Prince Ivan III of Moscow.   To give everyone a taste of this fascinating history, and to hear from someone who really knows a lot about Russian history, we've invited Roberto from Tsar Power to tell us all about Early Modern Russia.   Why must Russian rulers be so ruthless? What makes 19th century Russian novels so rich and fascinating? And what exactly is the difference between a bow and an affectionate bow?
