Who Holds the Accountable Accountable?
2026/09/27
Who holds the people with authority accountable? That question runs through this week’s What the Frock?, as Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod wander into the increasingly blurry territory where authority, influence, money, ideology, and responsibility collide. It begins in the pulpit. When a priest declares that God is transgender and suggests that the resurrected Jesus may have “transitioned,” is that legitimate theological interpretation, or has doctrine become whatever the person standing behind the microphone says it is? More importantly, when religious authority makes extraordinary claims, who inside the institution is supposed to challenge them? From there, the same question moves into the world of media and commentary. Candace Owens has spent months raising explosive questions surrounding Charlie Kirk, Turning Point USA, and the people around them. But what happens when “I’m just asking questions” runs into the legal discovery process, where questions can suddenly require evidence and both sides get to ask them? Then comes artificial intelligence, where accountability becomes even harder to locate. Is access to powerful AI becoming a question of economic inequality? Should government regulate it? Can the companies building it be trusted to regulate themselves? And when billions of dollars, enormous computing resources, political influence, and government regulation begin intersecting, perhaps the oldest advice remains the most useful: Follow the money. From theology to conspiracy theories to artificial intelligence, Dave and Rod ask what happens when everybody wants authority, but nobody particularly wants to answer for how they use it. It’s What the Frock? One rabbi. One friar. Absolutely no supervision. #WhatTheFrock #Accountability #CandaceOwens #TurningPointUSA #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #Theology #Religion #FreeSpeech #Media #RabbiDave #FriarRod
Does God Care Who Wins a Football Game?
2026/09/20
After Ole Miss defeats LSU, quarterback Trinidad Chamblisscredits prayer, preparation, and God’s will for the victory. Rabbi Dave has heard enough. If God chose the winner, what does that say about the losing team? Why does God receive public credit after victories but rarely appear in the losing locker room? That postgame interview launches Rabbi Dave and Friar Rodinto a larger argument about the way human beings claim divine authority for their own ambitions. From football fields to European battlefields, victors have always been tempted to declare that God stood with them. Faith in God’s will is one thing. Claiming to know that a touchdown, election, or warexpresses that will is something far more dangerous. The conversation then turns to another modern article offaith: the approaching artificial-intelligence apocalypse. Bernie Sanders calls AI more dangerous than nuclear weapons, while frightened students avoid learning the technology that will shape their careers. Dave and Rod consider whether the panic is justified, whether regulation will protect the public or merely entrench the largest technology companies, and why anyone who genuinely fears AI should first learn how it works. Finally, Britain proposes state-directed “pre-bunking” programs, approved news sources, and official databases of supposedly false narratives. Who decides what counts as misinformation, disinformation, malinformation, or merely dissent? Once government claims the authority to determine truth in advance, Orwell’s Ministry of Truth stops looking likesatire. It is a conversation about faith, fear, power, football, andthe persistent human desire to place God’s signature on our own conclusions.Along the way there is Caribbean cricket, Lane Kiffin, artificial ludicrous intelligence, Monty Python, and the forgotten birthday that arrived twelve days early. #WhatTheFrock #GodsWill #FaithAndSports#ArtificialIntelligence #FreeSpeech #Misinformation #RabbiDave #FriarRod
Chef Boyardee Saves Civilization
2026/09/13
Artificial intelligence may eventually destroy humanity, although at the moment it still struggles with fingers, factual citations, and the occasional straightforward instruction. That has not discouraged a growing class of researchers, former researchers, professional alarm-ringers, and extremely online prophets from warning that the machines could become smarter than their creators sometime next year. Conveniently, next year is always close enough to frighten investors but far enough away to avoid an immediate audit. Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod consider the latest prediction fromformer Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who believes that self-improving AI could escape meaningful human control. The concern is serious, even if the evidence remains less cooperative than the headlines. Today’s systems canrecognize patterns, exploit poorly designed safeguards, and produce nonsense with remarkable confidence. In fairness, humanity pioneered that last capability centuries ago. The deeper question is not whether a computer can think likea person. It is whether people will surrender judgment to systems they barely understand. That becomes especially uncomfortable when the discussion moves from research laboratories to courtrooms. After the Lindsay Clancy mistrial, the public treatment of a holdout juror raises troubling questions about racial assumptions, media conduct, jury intimidation, and whether anyone will willingly serve again once journalists begin examining jurors as though they were congressional nominees. An AI jury is proposed, because apparently the solution to distrusting human judgment is placing our liberty in the hands of software written by humans. Nature, meanwhile, has developed its own weapons program. Anewly documented Amazonian spider builds a spring-loaded silk ballista capable of launching ants at roughly 140 times the force of gravity. The spiders are advancing, the computers are plotting, and Chef Boyardee remains humanity’s final line of defense. Fortunately, Dave has stockpiled the lasagna. This maynot save civilization, but civilization has made worse preparations. #WhatTheFrock #ArtificialIntelligence #AIDoom #Anthropic#JacobCoxon #JurySystem #MediaBias #FreeSpeech #BallistaSpider #ChefBoyardee#RabbiDave #FriarRod #Podcast #DryHumor
Correct the Map? What The Frock Is Wrong With It?
2026/09/06
A map is supposed to help you find your way. Unfortunately, the latest attempt to “Correct the Map” may tell us more about modern politics than it does about geography. In this episode of What the Frock?, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod examine the campaign against the Mercator projection, the familiar world map that makes Greenland look enormous, stretches Antarctica toward infinity, and leaves Africa appearing smaller than it really is. The distortion is genuine, but it is hardly a sinister plot. Gerardus Mercator designed his map in 1569 to preserve compass bearings for navigation, not to flatter countries that did not yet exist or insult continents sitting comfortably along the equator. That raises the question at the center of the conversation: What exactly are we correcting? From there, the discussion turns toward our habit of declaring something a problem, identifying a villain, and demanding a solution that may have little connection to the original facts. That pattern leads Dave and Rod into the public reaction surrounding the Lindsay Clancy trial, where social media experts transformed a complicated criminal case into a battleground over victimhood, mental illness, justice, and blame. The navigational hazards continue with hikers who used artificial intelligence to plan a climb of Mount Shasta, only to discover that Google Gemini is no substitute for preparation, experience, spare batteries, or an actual map. The episode eventually wanders into AI hallucinations, microwave omelet makers, Ryan Reynolds’ peculiar recollection of the “brutal” 1980s, MTV, Christopher Walken, improperly sized Navy shoes, and the long-awaited arrival of What the Frock? stickers. It is a longer episode, because the listeners have spoken. The destination may be uncertain, but Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod remain confidently off course. Welcome to a thoroughly Mercator edition of What the Frock? #WhatTheFrock #MercatorProjection #CorrectTheMap #MapDistortion #UnitedNations #ArtificialIntelligence #Podcast
Hormonal
2026/08/30
There are bad arguments, and then there are bad arguments whose consequences stretch far beyond the case in whichthey were made. The defense of Lindsay Clancy, accused of murdering her three young children, raises precisely that kind of problem. If postpartum hormonesand psychiatric distress can diminish criminal responsibility, where does compassion end and accountability begin? More importantly, what happens when the reasoning offered to excuse one woman is applied to women everywhere? That is the uncomfortable territory Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod enter in this episode of What the Frock? The conversation is deliberately provocative because the implications are difficult to ignore. An argument intended to protect a particular defendant may also revive assumptions women spent generations overcoming: that hormones makethem unreliable, emotionally unstable, or unsuitable for positions involving judgment, authority, and public safety. Once biology becomes a defense against responsibility, it can just as easily become a justification for discrimination. From there, the discussion moves into the wider theater of political absurdity. Canada is outraged by President Trump’s effort to rename Lake Ontario, apparently discovering a newfound reverence for historical names after years of renaming streets, universities, public buildings, and civic landmarks. Threats involving Canadian electricity and the continuing trade dispute only add another layer to a quarrel in which symbolism frequently seems more important than practical consequences. Along the way, there is Facebook Marketplace at two in the morning, an unexpectedly complicated English muffin, questionable Canadian political geography, and the usual effort to determine whether society has lost its mind or merely misplaced it temporarily. This is the “Hormonal Edition” of What the Frock?, a shorter episode built around one persistent question: when we create an excuse for behavior we would otherwise condemn, are weprepared to live with that excuse when it is applied everywhere else? #WhatTheFrock #PoliticalCommentary #CurrentEvents #LindsayClancy #PostpartumPsychosis #CriminalResponsibility #GenderDoubleStandards
The Cult in Your Pocket: How the Internet Changes What We Believe
2026/08/23
The internet was supposed to give us access to the accumulated knowledge of humanity. Instead, it may be making it harder to agree on what is true. This week on What The Frock?, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod wrestle with a question that has become increasingly difficult to ignore: What happens when the device in your pocket doesn't merely provide information, but begins shaping the way you understand the world? It starts with something personal. Dave discovers just how much time his sixteen-year-old son is spending online and begins thinking about the phenomenon of internet radicalization. Years ago, Americans wondered how ISIS recruiters could reachordinary young people through a computer screen and gradually pull them into an entirely different understanding of reality. Today, the machinery is everywhere. Social media feeds reinforce what people already believe. Algorithms learn what keeps them watching. Repetitionbegins to feel like confirmation. Emotion can overwhelm evidence. Eventually, contrary information may no longer challenge a belief at all. It can simply become further proof that the other side cannot be trusted. Dave and Rod explore the uncomfortable similarities between that process and the psychology of cults, along with the problem faced by anyone trying to remain skeptical in anenvironment where every side claims to possess the facts. But underneath the politics, misinformation, echo chambers and algorithms is a much more personal question. What happens when someone you love begins seeing the world through that screen? And what can a parent, friend, teacher, podcaster, or ordinary citizen possibly do about it? This week, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod go looking for answers, or at least for the right questions. Bean Soup
2026/08/16
Why does everything on the internet eventually become aboutus? This week on What The Frock?, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod dive into Bean Soup Theory, the wonderfully simple idea that explains an astonishing amount of what happens on social media. Someone posts a recipe for bean soup, and instead of deciding whether they want bean soup, people start demanding substitutions, alterations, and entirely new recipes designed around their own tastes. Before long, somebody else's soup has become all about them. Sound familiar? The theory becomes the thread connecting three verydifferent stories. First, Dave and Rod return to the troubling story of Cambridge professor Jason Arday. Following his resignation and sudden death, arguments over his academic record quickly became arguments over racism, DEI, institutional responsibility, politics, and who should be blamed. Everybodyseems determined to stir something of their own into the pot. Then it's off to sea aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, where reports about an extraordinarily long deployment, shipboard conditions, food, and unhappy sailors have generated plenty of outrage ashore. Dave brings his own experience as a Navy submariner to the discussion, including powdered eggs, questionable meals, relentless cleaning, inspections, Navy chiefs, and the ancient sailor's tradition of complaining about absolutely everything. Finally, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese walksstraight into the soup pot when a podcaster asks him to play "Shag, Marry, Date." He initially refuses, she keeps pushing, Kylie Minogue enters the conversation, and Australia gets another reason to argue on the internet.Three stories. One increasingly familiar human impulse: How can I make this about me? Grab a spoon. The bean soup is ready. #WhatTheFrock #BeanSoupTheory #JasonArday #USSAbrahamLincoln#AnthonyAlbanese #SocialMedia #InternetCulture #OnlineOutrage #Podcast#RabbiDave #FriarRod
When Belief Meets Reality...
2026/08/09
Sometimes the biggest story isn't what happened. It's whatpeople do when they're challenged to defend what they claim to believe. This week on What The Frock?, Rabbi Dave and FriarRod dive into a series of stories that, at first glance, seem completely unrelated. A celebrated Cambridge professor resigns after questions emerge about his remarkable résumé. Candace Owens and the culture of perpetual "just asking questions" come under the microscope. The conversationturns back to the COVID years, Anthony Fauci's congressional testimony, and whether public officials truly stood behind the decisions they made when it mattered most. The discussion then shifts to Washington State, whereclimate policy collides with economic reality. If government leaders genuinely believe the principles they're promoting, why do their own decisions sometimes point in a very different direction? Dave argues that actions are often the clearest window into what people really believe, and that institutions, politicians, and public figures alike eventually reveal themselves through the choices they make. Along the way, the conversation lightens with stories fromDave and Cami's anniversary trip to Victoria, British Columbia. Afternoon tea, a marathon walk that wasn't supposed to be one, an enjoyable crossing aboard the MV Coho, and even an unexpected cricket conversation with a Canadian cab driver remind listeners that life's best moments often come between the headlines. The episode wraps up with a look at the future of radio, podcasting, and artificial intelligence, asking where authentic human conversation fits into a rapidly changing media landscape. Whether you're interested in politics, culture, currentevents, or simply enjoy thoughtful conversations mixed with humor and personal stories, this episode has something to make you think. Baboons In the Road
2026/08/02
This week on What The Frock?, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod discover that the best-laid plans never survive first contact with the morning news. What begins with tourists ignoring warnings and climbing an active volcano quickly spirals into one of the strangest conversations the show has ever produced. Before long, they're discussing baboons digging through garbage, social media's obsession with creating content at any cost, and why one bizarre interview became the perfect metaphor for modern culture. From there, the conversation turns to the latest controversy surrounding the WNBA, Sophie Cunningham, and the ongoing debate over biological males competing in women's sports. Along the way, Dave raises a question that few people seem willing to ask: if the movement's logic is consistent, why are there no openly transgender athletes playing in the WNBA? The second half of the episode shifts from sports to technology as the pair examine reports that artificial intelligence companies are purchasing printed books, cutting them apart, scanning every page, and destroying the originals to train AI models. For two lifelong lovers of books and history, the practice raises unsettling questions about the future of literature, publishing, and preserving the written word. Finally, they close with another reminder that reality is often stranger than satire, exploring how modern news organizations can still be fooled by internet memes in an era when virtually everything has become content. It's an episode filled with humor, sharp observations, unexpected detours, and more than a few moments that leave everyone asking the same question: how did we get here? Join Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod for another lively edition of What The Frock?, where the week's headlines become the starting point for conversations you won't hear anywhere else. #WhatTheFrock #RabbiDave #FriarRod #Podcast #CurrentEvents #Culture #AI #WNBA #Commentary
Sometimes Your Purpose in Life is to be Bot Scrapings
2026/07/26
Have you ever wondered if your greatest contribution to humanity might be... accidentally training artificial intelligence? That bizarre question launches one of the funniest and most unexpectedly thoughtful episodes of What The Frock? After a sudden spike in podcast traffic revealed that a surprising amount of the audience may actually be AI scraping bots, Rabbi Dave finds himself questioning everything from internet analytics to personal legacy. Is there a way to confuse the machines? Should creators deliberately feed AI absurd information? And what happens if your life's work ends up teaching computers instead of people? From there, the conversation takes one of those classic What The Frock? turns that somehow makes perfect sense. A chance to drive a lifelong dream car—a 2005 Corvette—in the Silverdale Whaling Days Parade becomes an unexpected lesson about confidence, maturity, and why the coolest person on the road isn't always the fastest one. Sometimes real power comes from knowing what you're capable of without feeling the need to prove it. The episode also dives into President Trump's appearance at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the fine art of trolling the media, and a candid discussion about hearing loss and tinnitus after Rabbi Dave's recent audiology appointment. Along the way, there are plenty of detours, laughs, and the kind of conversations that only happen when two friends start with one topic and somehow connect it to half a dozen others. Whether you're interested in artificial intelligence, politics, fast cars, history, or simply enjoy listening to two friends chase ideas wherever they lead, this episode has something for you. So settle in, subscribe if you haven't already, and join Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod for another entertaining, irreverent, and occasionally philosophical edition of What The Frock? It's Odd, You See...
2026/07/19
Welcome to another episode of What the Frock?, where the conversations are made up and the rabbit trails definitely matter. This week, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod somehow manage to connect Homer, the King James Bible, Christopher Nolan, international soccer, airline seating, and the greatest tragedy of the modern age: the disappearance of McDonald's fried apple pies. The adventure begins with a surprisingly serious discussion about Bible translation. Is every translation really an interpretation? Why do so many people cling to one version of Scripture while dismissing others? It turns out those same questions apply to another ancient work making headlines this summer: The Odyssey. With Christopher Nolan's adaptation generating plenty of conversation, Rabbi Dave shares his thoughts on the film, the source material, and why Homer still has something important to say nearly three thousand years later. Of course, this is What the Frock?, so staying on topic is never part of the plan. Before long the conversation veers into the FIFA World Cup, strange airline seating arrangements, and whether modern conveniences have quietly made life a little less enjoyable. That naturally leads to an emotional remembrance of McDonald's original fried apple pie, complete with stories, nostalgia, and perhaps a little righteous indignation over what was lost. If you enjoy history, theology, movies, sports, pop culture, and watching two friends wander from one completely unrelated subject to another while somehow tying it all together by the end, you've come to the right place. So settle in, grab your favorite snack—preferably a fried apple pie if you can still find one—and join Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod for another unpredictable episode of What the Frock? You never know where the conversation will go, but it is always guaranteed to be entertaining. #WhatTheFrock #TheOdyssey #ChristopherNolan #GreekMythology #Homer #ClassicalLiterature #MovieReview #BibleTranslations #FriedApplePie #PopCulture #PodcastLife #BewareGreeksBearingGifts
Snakes... Why'd It Have to be Snakes?
2026/07/12
Welcome to another episode of What the Frock?, where Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod once again prove that no topic is too serious, too ridiculous, or too completely unrelated to become part of the same conversation. This week begins with a trip to the movies, but not the one everyone is talking about. Instead of debating Hollywood's latest attempt to "improve" Homer's The Odyssey, the guys discover that Minions & Monsters may actually do a better job of honoring one of history's greatest stories. Along the way, they explore why ancient myths still resonate today, how classic films continue to influence modern animation, and why the greatest stories ever told rarely need to be rewritten. Then the conversation takes an unexpected turn into the strange economics of modern music. Fresh off releasing their own comedy song, Kung Fu vs Love, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod ask a simple question: if millions of songs are being streamed every day, why are so many artists unable to sell concert tickets? From Spotify playlists and "ghost streams" to the disappearance of shared musical culture, they examine how technology may be changing the way we measure success without actually creating more listeners. The discussion also tackles one of the week's most talked-about headlines, as an Air Force major protests in uniform on the steps of the Capitol, raising questions about military professionalism, political expression, and the traditions that have long separated America's armed forces from partisanpolitics. And because no episode of What the Frock? would be complete without ending somewhere completely unexpected, the guys wrap things up with the unbelievable story of nearly 900 escaped snakes in China, proving once again that reality continues to outdo fiction. History, mythology, music, sports, politics, and reptiles. Somehow, it all fits together. I... I've Seen This Movie Before
2026/07/05
What if the machines do not destroy us because they are too smart, but because they follow bad instructions perfectly? This week on What the Frock?, Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod start with sports, World Cup drama, penalty kicks, instant replay, and the strange modern belief that every human mistake can be fixed by one more camera angle. From VAR to NFL replay, the question becomes bigger than sports. Are we improving the game, or slowly draining the life out of it? Then comes AI, HAL 9000, Elon Musk, Google, truth, bias, and the unsettling possibility that we have already seen this movie before. If artificial intelligence is trained to value ideology over reality, what happens when it becomes powerful enough to enforce the lie? Along the way, there is Bosnia, Germany, Taylor Swift, books, bad technology, and the eternal warning every Dave Bowman knows by heart: “Open the pod bay doors, HAL.”  #WhatTheFrock #RabbiDave #FriarRod #ArtificialIntelligence #AI #SpaceOdyssey #HAL9000 #WorldCup #Soccer #Sports #ReplayReview #HumanNature #Technology #HistoryRepeats #Leadership #Truth #CriticalThinking #PopCulture #TaylorSwift #Podcast
Bosnian Kung Fu | What The Frock
2026/06/28
Sometimes the internet reminds us that it is both humanity's greatest achievement and its greatest mistake. This week, an innocent comment by a television reporter admitting she had no idea where Bosnia-Herzegovina was somehow exploded into an international controversy. There were apologies, outrage, arguments over geography, and even complaints that she apologized to Bosnia but forgot Herzegovina. Naturally, we decided the only sensible response was to make the situation even worse by inventing a list of "true facts" about Bosnia-Herzegovina. If you've ever wondered about emergency accordions, suspicious pigeons, or coffee strong enough to remember your childhood, you've come to the right place. Of course, once we start down a rabbit trail, there is rarely any turning back. This episode also tackles the continuing Caitlin Clark saga, the future of the WNBA, and whether an NBA franchise might eventually decide that putting fans in the seats is a pretty good business model. We wander into the surprisingly fascinating history of Carl Douglas's 1974 hit "Kung Fu Fighting," discover why there has only been one famous song about martial arts for the last fifty years, and explain why that oversight has now been corrected. Along the way, Dave unveils his latest Hallmark Christmas movie pitch, inspired by one of the strangest real news stories of the year. It is equal parts romance, political satire, Christmas movie cliché, and "how in the world did we get here?" We'll wrap things up with Washington state's ever-climbing gas prices, why Idaho gas stations are suddenly doing a booming business, and whatever else happened to wander into our field of view. As always, there was no script, no roadmap, and very little adult supervision. Just two friends chasing whatever caught their attention. Chai if by Land... Tea if by Sea | What the Frock
2026/06/21
There are some weeks when the news cycle feels like a carefully organized sequence of important events. Then there are weeks like this one, where you find yourself discussing earthquake prophets, cricket, influencer narcissism, Elon Musk, and an apparent uprising of Wyoming deer all in the same conversation. Naturally, that became an episode of What The Frock? We started with one of the internet's favorite hobbies: predicting the end of the world. Depending on which social media account you follow, California is either perfectly fine or about fifteen minutes away from sliding into the Pacific Ocean. Every few months somebody discovers a prophecy, a prediction, a chart, or a mysterious warning that promises catastrophe is just around the corner. Human beings have been predicting disasters since the beginning of recorded history. The internet simply lets them do it faster. From there we wandered into a subject that seems to explain a surprising amount of modern behavior: Main Character Syndrome. You know the type. The person filming themselves while blocking traffic. The influencer convinced everyone around them exists as supporting cast. The activist who somehow turns every issue, every event, and every headline into a story about themselves. Somewhere along the line social media convinced a lot of people that life is not something you live. It is something you perform. The conversation eventually found its way to politics because, frankly, everything eventually does. We looked at the strange spectacle of anti-Musk protests, political celebrations, and the increasingly common habit of defining yourself entirely by who you oppose. There is a difference between having convictions and turning politics into your entire personality. America seems to be having trouble remembering that distinction. Sports provided a welcome break from all of that. We spent some time talking soccer, international competition, and the continuing effort to explain cricket to Americans. The more cricket I watch, the more I understand why the rest of the world is obsessed with it. The more I try to explain it, the less certain I am that I understand it myself. Then came one of my favorite stories of the week. Apparently there are reports out of Wyoming suggesting that deer are becoming a little more aggressive toward hunters. Whether this represents an actual wildlife counteroffensive or simply another strange internet headline remains unclear. Either way, it raised an important philosophical question: at what point does the hunted decide it has had enough? We wrapped up with a discussion that somehow became more serious than expected. What exactly is the difference between tea and chai? As it turns out, the answer says quite a bit about language, culture, and the strange ways words travel around the world. In other words, it was a perfectly normal episode of What The Frock? Well, normal for us anyway. Join Rabbi Dave and Friar Rod for another hour of headlines, humor, observations, arguments, and the occasional reminder that reality remains far more creative than anything Hollywood could write. #WhatTheFrock #RabbiDave #FriarRod #PodcastLife #CurrentEvents #CultureCommentary #MainCharacterSyndrome #ElonMusk #CricketUSA #SoccerTalk #InternetCulture #EarthquakeWarning #TeaVsChai #PoliticalHumor #Satire #SocialMediaCulture #CommonSense #HumorPodcast #RealityIsWeirderThanFiction #NewsAndViews
