On this week's episode, Brenda interviews Nicoletta Batini editor of The Economics of Sustainable Food and lead evaluator of the International Monetary Fund Office of Independent Evaluation. ABOUT THE ECONOMICS OF SUSTAINABLE FOOD The Economics of Sustainable Food is a new Island Press book edited by economist Nicoletta Batini. Producing food industrially like we do today causes tremendous global economic losses in terms of malnutrition, diseases, and environmental degradation. But because the food industry does not bear those costs and the price tag for these losses does not show up at the grocery store, it is too often ignored by economists and policymakers. The Economics of Sustainable Food details the true cost of food for people and the planet. It illustrates how to transform our broken system, alleviating its severe financial and human burden. The key is smart macroeconomic policy that moves us toward methods that protect the environment like regenerative land and sea farming, low-impact urban farming, and alternative protein farming, and toward healthy diets. The book’s multidisciplinary team of authors lay out detailed fiscal and trade policies, as well as structural reforms, to achieve those goals. Visit the book's webpage for additional info. ABOUT NICOLETTA BATINI Nicoletta Batini is an Italian economist, notable as a scholar of innovative monetary and fiscal policy practices. She pioneered work on the dangers of fiscal austerity and on how to curb debt successfully during financial deleveraging. Prior to the IMF, she was Advisor of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, Professor of Economics at the University of Surrey, and Director of the International Economics and Policy Office of the Treasury in Italy. She has handled extensive consultancy roles internationally. She holds a Ph.D. in international finance (Scuola Superiore S. Anna) and a Ph.D. in monetary economics. Interview with Marvin Hayes, Founder & Director, Baltimore Compost Collective ABOUT MARVIN HAYES Marvin Hayes has been a youth educator and mentor for over 20 years. His professional experiences include running recreation programming, alternate education youth consoling, mediation services, and youth workforce development. He has a patience and a presence with the youth that cannot be taught in a classroom but has been cultivated by his lifetime of experience. Recently Marvin has been the leader of a community- based food scrap collection service, Baltimore Compost Collective and composting service as a start-up for local job creation. Hiring underemployed area youth, Marvin has helped grow the idea into a service that collects over a quarter ton of food scraps each week to turn into nutrient rich soil for the new growth. ABOUT LORIKIM ALEXANDER Originally from Kingston, Jamaica, LoriKim Alexander has dedicated her life to working for social and environmental justice, specifically organizing around justice for LGBTQIA+ Black, Brown and Indigenous Communities. LoriKim’s work in anthropology and as a trained biologist has facilitated her in centering initiatives against environmental racism and for the implementation of environmental education for People of Color around Indigenous ecological knowledge and decolonialism through veganism for the past 25+ years. Having lived in different parts of the US for three decades, LoriKim now resides in NYC where she continues her work as a facilitator and organizer in an effort to ensure the creation of spaces that center the most marginalized. As a core organizer at Black VegFest, LoriKim supports the work through grant writing, copy writing, project management, speaking, and teaching. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Malik Kenyatta Yakini is an activist and educator who is committed to freedom and justice for African people in particular and humanity in general. Yakini is a co-founder and the Executive Director of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, which operates a seven-acre farm in Detroit and spearheaded efforts to establish the Detroit Food Policy Council, which he chaired from December 2009 - May 2012. He served as a member of the Michigan Food Policy Council from 2008 - 2010. From 2011 - 2013 he served on the steering committee of Uprooting Racism Planting Justice. He is a co-founder of the National Black Food and Justice Alliance. From 1990 - 2011 he served as Executive Director of Nsoroma Institute Public School Academy, one of Detroit's leading African-centered schools. In 2006 he was honored as "Administrator of the Year" by the Michigan Association of Public School Academies. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Timbuktu Academy of Science and Technology from 2004 - 2011. He is C.E.O. of Black Star Educational Management. He is dedicated to working to identify and alleviate the impact of racism and white privilege on the food system. He has an intense interest in contributing to the development of an international food sovereignty movement that embraces Blacks farmers in the Americas, the Caribbean and Africa. He views the "good food revolution" as part of the larger movement for freedom, justice and equality. Yakini has presented at numerous local community meetings and national conferences on creating a racially just food system and implementing community food sovereignty practices. In 2017 and 2018 he co-led the course “Food Literacy for All” at the University of Michigan. He is featured in the book "Blacks Living Green," and the movies "Urban Roots" and “Tomorrow”. He has appeared on the nationally televised Tavis Smiley Show and Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. He served as an Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy "Food and Community Fellow" from 2011- 2013, and a Business Alliance for Living Local Economies (BALLE) Localist Fellow from 2014 - 2015. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the prestigious James Beard Leadership Award. He holds a B.A. degree in Broadcasting from Eastern Michigan University. Yakini is a musician who plays guitar, bass and dundun drums. He currently leads the Detroit-based band Mollywop!
