There are two sides to the American Revolution.  On one hand, there were policies and actions taken by British Parliament and the Continental Congress, that played a big part in war breaking out. Of course, there were also the actions of American Patriots in towns and cities across the countryside that also played their part in sparking the American Revolution. But there was also an intellectual and philosophical revolution that occurred in the minds of Americans during the 18th century thanks in part to the Age of Enlightenment. Both were important, but In this episode, we’re going to travel down the road to Revolution by primarily discussing the policies and events that ultimately led to the 13 colonies dissolving all political connection between themselves and Great Britain, leaving the philosophical conversation for another podcast. 27 words make up the second amendment, and yet, thanks to a few well-placed commas, a full reading of the text is often absent during any debate on gun policy.  But regardless of where the commas fall, it’s still just one amendment. Understanding it in full is vital because securing our individual rights has always been inextricably linked to our ability to defend them collectively.  Quite simply, “The people” and “the militia” are the same. In this episode, we’re going to explore democracy from a variety of periods and perspectives throughout history. We’re going to touch on Ancient Greece, The Roman Republic, the founding fathers of the United States, the fall of the Weimar Republic and the rise of the Nazis, Woodrow Wilson, and a lot more. My hope is that after this framing of Democracy, some of the issues being debated today, like the electoral college, for example, will make a bit more sense and you’ll understand why pure Democracy, especially in the context of an all-powerful centralized government, is not the cure-all many make it out to be.
