Maissa Houri is an Arab-Canadian award-winning independent filmmaker and actress based out of Ottawa, Canada. We get to know the very first person she met in our Rainbow Community. And how she became an ally for us. We also get to know her thoughts and opinions. And we also discuss what the acting world is like with and for LGBTQ actors. Also what her experience has been starting out as an actress and finding that 99% of her auditions consisted of either terrorist or refugee roles and what was that like for her. We also discuss why she decided to create her own work in order to properly represent her rich Arab culture. Currently, Maissa is the Director of Womxn’s Industry for the Digi60 Film Festival in Ottawa. Maissa is also working on the development of a new series based on Arab-Canadians, producing short films for emerging BIPOC directors and a new Instagram Live segment titled Moms After Dark where she interviews mothers working in the creative field. Shannon is probably one of the biggest LGBTQ Ally’s in Ottawa. Having tons of friends within the rainbow community. Her favourite party is a gay party. Her best and closest friends are members of the rainbow. Today we discuss the very first person she met who opened her eyes to a new world and what she has learned from being an ally. Born and raised in China Fangliang has seen and experienced a lot in her life. She is a former Tv journalist at International Channel Shanghai. She’s also a Documentary Filmmaker, Videographer/Editor at Carleton University. She has worked on amazing stories travelling to make these stories a reality to the world. I first met her years ago when we both crossed paths doing a mini documentary about my life with a few students at Carleton University. From there I was part of a video series she’s done called Identity Blossoming and a mini videography for a bit for CBC News. And we have remained friends ever since. Steevie is not your typical tattoo artist, he’s caring, a real gem and an ally to the rainbow community. I first met Steevie through someone I was seeing briefly back in 2017. He told me about his work and his shop Knux Studio located at 135 Bank Street Ottawa. I was looking for a custom piece and we came up with a stunning pin up arm piece. I’m still stopped and asked about it today. He has been tattooing for years and than finally opened up his dream shop. He has given new and upcoming artists a place to grow as well has even taken on new tattoo apprentices. Today I talk about what it’s like working in the field of sex products and the different type of retail that it is. The do’s & don’ts as well how to behave in this type of environment. Questions are most important when shopping for the type of products that you want. I go over the benefits of shopping in person compared to online at Amazon for instance. What is your favourite experience from working there? Which products are your favourite and why? What’s the best items that sell? Do you get to test out the products? Why did you want to work at that type of store? All these questions get answered and so much more. Today I speak to Eldrich their pronouns are he/him. He’s a dancer in contemporary and hip hop and we discuss what it’s like to be a pansexual and the difference of bisexual as well being a furry. The misconceptions that it’s just for kinks and giggles. How he became interested in it and so much more. We also discuss a rare genetic disorder called Phenylketonuria also known as PKU and how this has affected his life and relationships. Live On Elgin has been around for 6 years now. With many indie bands, known bands, live performances and so much more playing at this venue. What was thought up as a dream came a reality with the owner of Lawrence. We get to know the man behind this musical venue and hear his story of coming out as well the amazing things he has been apart of. Teachers are super important and the ones that make a difference are even better in my opinion but each teacher has a story and today we share Cody’s. We get to find out about his coming out story. What drew him to want to become a teacher. What he has learned as well we find out the different perspectives, such as the student perspective, the staffing perspective, and just queer student wellbeing as a whole. We also touch on Catholic schools and what he thinks of them. Cody is also running in the next provincial election June 2 as the Green Party candidate. So we will be discussing how that came to be and why he chose to go down that path.
