How Experts Treat Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL)
2026/10/16
Explore the latest EHA guidelines on chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and Richter transformation with key guideline authors Prof Barbara Eichhorst, hematologist at University Hospital Cologne (Germany), and Prof Paolo Ghia, Director of the CLL Program at Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele (Milan, Italy).  For the first time, the guidelines no longer recommend chemoimmunotherapy when targeted options are available, based on two key advances: the approval of acalabrutinib plus venetoclax with or without obinutuzumab for frontline CLL, and the approval of pirtobrutinib, a non-covalent BTK inhibitor, for relapsed/refractory disease—particularly after prior covalent BTK inhibitor treatment. The guests also make clear that patient selection matters, including TP53 status, IGHV status, comorbidities, co-medications, safety profile, and patient preferences.   Further, the experts highlight a landmark change in how the recommendations were developed: for the first time, patients and patient advocates participated as authors, bringing a patient-centred perspective to treatment decisions, active surveillance, and supportive care.   Tune in for practical insights into personalized CLL management, fixed-duration targeted therapy, treatment sequencing, and the challenges of Richter transformation. Guests:  Prof Barbara Eichhorst University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany Prof Paolo Ghia Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milano, Italy Host:    Isabel Olivera-Martínez, PhD,   Medical Writer for EHA  Learn More   What did you think of this podcast? Smarter CARs: Using AI to Improve Chimeric Antigen Receptor Design
2026/08/18
Artificial intelligence is opening new possibilities in the design of next-generation immunotherapies. In this episode of EHA Unplugged, Dr Andrea Schmidts discusses how AI-driven approaches are reshaping the development of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies, particularly at the design stage of the CAR receptor binding domains.   Dr Schmidts explains how structure-based AI models can generate entirely new protein binders, moving beyond the traditional reliance on monoclonal antibody–derived fragments. The conversation explores how these tools enable large-scale exploration of CAR designs, the experimental challenges of validating thousands of candidates, and the potential to tailor therapies that overcome resistance mechanisms such as antigen escape. Looking ahead, Dr. Schmidts highlights the role of AI across the entire CAR T-cell development pipeline—from early design to testing and manufacturing—and reflects on the practical and regulatory considerations of bringing AI-designed therapies to the clinic.  Guest:  Dr Andrea Schmidts Affiliation: Emmy Noether Group Leader, Medicine III – Hematology/Oncology, Technical University of Munich, Germany  Host: Leah de Leon Learn More What did you think of this podcast? What is Real-World Evidence Revealing About CAR T Therapy?
2026/08/17
In this episode, Prof Benoit Tessoulin examines how real-world evidence from the French DESCAR-T registry is expanding our understanding of CAR T-cell therapy beyond clinical trials. He explains how the registry captures data from patients considered for CAR T-cell treatment, including those who do not ultimately receive therapy, and explores what these data reveal about patient selection, treatment outcomes, bridging therapy, and comparisons between different CAR T-cell products.   The discussion also examines how real-world populations differ from clinical trial cohorts, in what measure registry data have confirmed the effectiveness of CAR T-cell therapy in routine practice, and what has been learned about toxicities such as CRS, ICANS, and infections. Prof Tessoulin highlights the importance of timely referral, evolving product selection strategies, and the growing role of patient registries in informing clinical decision-making and future research. Listen now for insights into how real-world data are informing CAR T-cell therapy updates.  This podcast episode is supported by Bristol Myers Squibb.  Guest:  Prof Benoit Tessoulin Affiliation: Hematology Department, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Nantes, France Host: Isabel Olivera-Martínez, PhD, Medical Writer for EHA   Learn More What did you think of this podcast?
