Hearing the words, "You have cancer," had to be the biggest shock of my life. My oncologist advised me to go off all hormone treatment immediately. So, within 48 hours, I had a cancer diagnosis, hot flashes, night sweats, brain fog, and painful sex. I'm a pretty happy and upbeat person, but the combination of this diagnosis, along with all of these other important things, was almost too much. Today's guest, Dr. Corinne Menn, believes that our treatment of women in menopause can be downright inhumane. I love the Indiana Jones movies. One of my favorite scenes is from the first film, where he shows Marian all his scars and tells her where they hurt so she can kiss them. Scars are no big deal, right? I certainly have my fair share of them after six breast cancer surgeries. What if scars were preventing your body from truly healing? 🌙 Sleep Better, Live Better: Your Guide to Restful Nights and Peaceful Days 🌱 We all know sleep is important, but getting a good night's rest can sometimes feel impossible. Here are simple tips to help you sleep better, get your body clock back on track, and feel better overall. 🌞 1. Reset Your Circadian Rhythm with Light Your body does best with a regular routine, and your body clock runs more smoothly when you stick to a schedule. Create a calming bedtime ritual, like reading, journaling, or soothing music. A warm bath or light stretching can also prepare you for sleep. In 2019, my voice was so hoarse that people could hardly hear what I was saying. Along with my hoarse voice, I struggled to swallow food, felt a burning sensation in my chest and on several nights woke up gasping for air I was terrified! After consulting with two different doctors, I finally received a diagnosis: GERD, or gastrointestinal reflux disease. When I heard this, my first thought was, hold on, I am not a middle-aged man! I thought GERD was something that happened after years of smoking and drinking too much beer. My physician prescribed drugs (what a surprise), but not much else was suggested. So, you know me, I decided to take a deeper dive into the root cause of this disorder. Guess what? I learned that the Vagus Nerve (the longest cranial nerve in the body) was probably the key player in fixing my symptoms. I started to “work on” healing my Vagus Nerve. I've never given much thought to artificial turf. That is, until I read a recent article published by today's podcast guest, Abbie. Have you heard of Pinkwashing? This is what happens when companies promote breast cancer awareness to boost sales while using harmful chemicals in their products. Pinkwashing can also cause what I call the "health halo." You see the pink ribbon, so you think the product is safe. It's like going into Whole Foods and assuming that everything sold there is good for you. Sorry if I just blew your mind. Here's why I think Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a Scam: Products promoting breast cancer awareness often contain harmful chemicals like parabens, phthalates, and BPA, which can disrupt hormones and increase breast cancer risk. Despite this, they are still marketed during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Some alcohol companies display the pink ribbon on their products, despite research showing that alcohol consumption is a known risk factor for breast cancer. Studies indicate that women who drink regularly have a higher risk of developing the disease, with those consuming one drink a day facing a 7-10% increased risk. Here are my action steps: Choose a starting point and take action. Following my breast cancer diagnosis, I evaluated the products I used on my skin and face. The average American woman uses about 20 products daily, totaling around 168 different chemicals, including makeup, toothpaste, and shampoo. Studies show that when a woman reduces her toxin load for just 28 days, she can reduce her risk of breast cancer. One thing I never considered during my experience with cancer was the body's ability to heal itself. Although I was a holistic nutritionist, my focus was primarily on food. When it came to healing, it was best left to medical professionals. After all, how could the body heal without drugs or medical intervention? Honestly, if someone had told me to focus on healing my body by getting more sleep, eating organic foods, spending time in nature, managing my stress, and maintaining a spiritual practice, I would have thought, "Sure, that might help me feel better," but would it actually contribute to my healing? I've been avoiding my "final" surveillance oncology appointment. Why was I avoiding it? I wish I had a good answer for you. I was a little scared; I'd felt a weird lump in one of my breasts and experienced some pain in the other breast. As I drove to my appointment with my husband, a Bible verse from James came to mind. Count it ALL joy when facing various trials. Really? Would I have JOY while sitting in my oncologist's office? I don't think so. How do we "count it all joy" when we don't know what the outcome will be? I guess that's the point. Growing in our faith and persevering, even when we don't know the outcome, is how we grow in character. Do you ever feel like you have enough character, haha! Can I take a character break for a few months? After what seemed to be the longest oncology appointment of my life, after the exam, my doctor got a big smile on her face and said, You Are Good. Followed by, "if you want to check in with me again, you can, or we never have to see each other again". As much as I like you, I'm choosing not to see you again! Here are my four key takeaways on finding joy in the face of challenges. You know, if I had a dollar for every time someone told me to calm down, I'd have a cozy little retirement fund by now!  In today's episode, Dr. Brian shared some insightful wisdom about how we all need ways to soothe our nervous systems. He mentioned that our nervous system has its own "muscle memory," and with a bit of practice, we can really enhance our ability to relax. I went on to explain to Dr. Brian that I start my day, shoes off, coffee mug in hand, walking around my yard and praying. I've recently started walking the yard at the end of my day, barefoot, no coffee :) And thanking God for my day, for flowers for breath in my lungs. When I watch too much news, it feels like I lose control over my emotions. I often feel guilty if I don't fully understand all the disasters happening around the world. In today's podcast, our guest, Dr. Brian, explains that staying too connected to the news, disasters, and toxic situations keeps us in a heightened emotional state. When we remain in this state for too long, we can lose touch with our better selves. This can lead to being short-tempered with our loved ones and being less present with the people right in front of us. Dr. Brian also explained that staying in a heightened emotional state (watching too much news or being excessively active on social media) can trigger the body's "fight-or-flight" response, also known as the "fire alarm." Over time, our body no longer hears the alarm, and that's when stress starts to impact our health. Key Takeaway: I never knew that high rates of cortisol (stress hormone) were linked to an increase in type 2 diabetes. Dr. Brian shared research indicating high levels of cortisol and inadequate blood sugar control. So yes, stress can quite literally create diabetes in your body.
