What if we applied the concept of “enough” when designing and building our homes? With Jane Hilliard of Designful and Homeful by Designful
2022/07/08
What if we applied the concept of “enough” when designing and building our homes?  In a world where we are overshooting many planetary boundaries, it is important to ask the question - what is enough? What is enough for me to live a happy and healthy life, while allowing “enough” for other people and other planetary life forms to flourish?   The housing industry is a big contributor to greenhouse emissions, deforestation, loss of biodiversity and waste generation. It's an important area for examination of how we could be doing things differently.  Today I speak with Jane Hilliard, founding director and head designer at Tasmanian based company Designful, a company with a passion for making great design available to more people, to support them in leading healthy, sustainable and meaningful lifestyles.  Jane applies the concept of “enoughness” when working with her clients and believes this concept is critical for transitioning the housing industry to be more regenerative in the face of the global environmental and social crises we are experiencing.   Today we cover off:  Jane’s background in the building design industry; Jane’s company Designful, and Homeful by Designful – what these companies offer and how they operate to challenge the status quo;Which areas of the building/design/construction industry Jane views as the most problematic right now and the level of awareness of environmental impacts present in the industry right now; How modern home design contributes to the phenomenon of “disconnection” from the natural, living world; Which design elements help to facilitate connection to community, place and the living world; Which elements of the legislative framework require reform to transition the industry to be more regenerative; Jane’s vision for the building design/construction industry in 2050. Show links:  Jane Hilliard “about” info - http://www.designful.com.au/team/Designful Website – http://www.designful.com.au/ Homeful by Designful website - http://www.designful.com.au/homeful-by-designful/ The Undercover Architect podcast episodes featuring Jane -  https://undercoverarchitect.com/podcast-designing-your-home-using-enoughness-jane-hilliard-designful/ Goodlife Permaculture website - https://goodlifepermaculture.com.au/ Jason Hickel’s Less is More book mentioned by Jane - https://www.jasonhickel.org/less-is-more Adrienne Maree Brown podcast mentioned by Sophie https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/octavias-parables/id1519024926

What if we moved more intuitively in business? With Aime McNee of @inspiredtowrite & the Unpublished Podcast
2022/06/19
What if we moved more intuitively in business?  The way we live and work is changing. To address the environmental and social crises we face, we must move away from the capitalist economic system. This will have dramatic ramifications for how we do business, how we work and how we spend our time - I believe, in a very positive way! This is the focus of the conversation today with Aime McNee: author, creative coach, book doula and host of the Unpublished Podcast.  In this discussion, we cover:  Aime's traditional career background and experience of moving into a place of creative self-employment;Hitting: rock bottom - it's not always the worst thing; How to manage your time in self-employment; Aime's approach to managing finances in an "unpredictable" career; How to deal with "gatekeepers"; Should you do "the thing" if other people are out there already doing "the thing" and doing it "better"?; How to price your offerings; Should you build community before you develop a product or offering?; Tools to navigate internal blocks - e.g. fear of failure / unworthiness / fear of judgement; I ask Aime how she knows when her creative projects are "aligned" with her soul's purpose; How to stimulate creativity and identify areas of enjoyment; Where do creative ideas come from? A bit of advice for creatives embarking on their own self-driven careers. Show links:  Aime McNee website: https://www.amiemcnee.com/Inspired to Write Podcast - https://anchor.fm/amie-mcneeAime McNee courses - https://www.amiemcnee.com/ Inspired to Write Podcast - https://www.instagram.com/inspiredtowrite/?hl=enPodcast - David Holmgren - Origins of permaculture - https://makingpermaculturestronger.net/david-holmgren-permaculture-design-process-journey-part-one-e53/ https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/david-holmgren-sees-a-resilient-future-live-renew-fest/id1525053808?i=1000534141594

2022/06/05
What if we shifted to a needs-based economy?  Join me in our episode today featuring Della Duncan: Renegade Economist, Right Livelihood Coach, Gross National Happiness Trainer and host of the ‘Upstream’ Podcast, for our final deep dive into shifting to a “needs-based” economy.  In our conversation, we cover:   How the Enclosures, post-WWII period and the mid-1980’s shaped the capitalist economy we see today;  Why “greed, hatred and delusion” are the root causes of our economic problems; What prompted the “disconnectedness” that appeared during the time of the Enclosures; I ask Della whether she thinks humans are inherently “good or evil”; The importance of “critical thinking” when challenging the capitalist economic paradigm; How Western societies are perpetuating the situation of inequality with the Global South; How negative interest might address some of the “stagnation” issues we see within the capitalist economy (including an explanation of how money is created); Ideas for how we can promote a truly democratic economic system and enhance our rights to freedom of speech; The most impactful and helpful teachings Della draws on in her journey as an environmental and spiritual activist; and Della gives some insight into her experience at Schumacher College and how it has shaped her to be the person she is today. Show links:  Della Duncan Website: https://www.dellazduncan.com/ Upstream Podcast: https://www.upstreampodcast.org/  “Homoeconomicus” episode on Upstream Podcast: https://www.upstreampodcast.org/homoeconomicus Accidental Gods Episodes with Della Duncan: https://accidentalgods.life/episode-10/  Accidental Gods Episode with Charles and Jimmy Eisenstein: https://accidentalgods.life/thrutopia-bonus-10th-anniversary-of-sacred-economics/ Course on Economics mentioned by Della during our interview: Gaia Education course - https://www.programmes.gaiaeducation.uk/economic-dimension-en Henry Coleman, Local Futures: https://www.localfutures.org/conference-speaker/henry-coleman-australia/

What if we shifted to a “needs-based” economy? Part 2 - with Helena Norberg-Hodge, Local Futures
2022/05/12
What if we shifted to a needs-based economy?  Join me in our episode today featuring the incredible Helena Norberg-Hodge, world-renowned linguist, author, activist and filmmaker, as we discuss why shifting to a needs-based economy (or localization) would be the best path to addressing multiple converging crises that we face in the world today. Helena is the founder and director of Local Futures, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the revitalisation of cultural and biological diversity and the strengthening of local communities and economies world-wide.  Today we cover:   The economy as a root cause perpetuating the crises we see in the world today; The history of our economic system; What a “needs-based” economy is; Whether we can adapt our current systems (e.g. economic, political, legal, food systems) to be “needs-based” to address the current crises, or whether we need to implement a whole new system; Whether any economic models (e.g. Doughnut Economics, Degrowth Economics) appeal to Helena as viable systemic solutions; Helena’s experience in Ladakh (otherwise known as Little Tibet) witnessing the societal shift from a needs-based economy (based on a mentality of abundance) to a Western economic model (based on scarcity); A bit about World Localization Day, what it’s all about and how to get involved; The issue of economic illiteracy as a barrier to effective climate and environmental activism; Why we all need to be literate in the areas of ecological and economic literacy to engage in effective activism; Helena explains the main points to focus on when building economic literacy.Show links:  Helena Norberg-Hodge, about: https://www.localfutures.org/about/who-we-are/helena-norberg-hodge/ Helena Norberg-Hodge publications: https://www.localfutures.org/publications/ancient-futures-book-helena-norberg-hodge/ Helena’s podcast episode with Dumbo Feather: https://www.dumbofeather.com/podcast/conversation-series-week-10-with-helena-norberg-hodge/ Helena’s podcast episode with Futuresteading:  https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/helena-norberg-hodge-charts-clear-path-towards-systemic/id1507885629?i=1000524419899 Local Futures: https://www.localfutures.org/about/who-we-are/ World Localization Day: https://www.localfutures.org/world-localization-day/ Local Futures Podcast: https://www.localfutures.org/programs/global-to-local/local-futures-podcast/ Localization Action Guide: https://www.localfutures.org/programs/global-to-local/local-futures-podcast/ Local Futures Recommended Resources: https://www.localfutures.org/action-resources/recommended-readings/

What if we shifted to a “needs-based” economy? Part 1 - with Elisa Rathje, Appleturnover
2022/05/06
Today I am in conversation with Elisa Rathje of Appleturnover to discuss "what if we shifted to a needs-based economy. I was keen to discuss the economy as it is a recurrent theme when researching root-causes of the climate crisis. Today we have a relaxed conversation covering the following topics:  a childhood book inspiring Elisa right now;the challenges inherent in climate activism; the pros and cons of a “climate action roadmap”; the importance of non-violent communication in climate activism; what the term “climate crisis” actually encompasses - defining the problem; the economy as a “root cause” of the climate crisis with reference to Manda Scott and Miki Kashtan's conversation on the Accidental Gods Podcast (link below); Kate Raworth’s “Doughnut Economic Model”; How to navigate fear and panic about the climate crises; “Active Hope” online course by Joanna Macy & Chris Johnstone; The role and impact of scarcity in economics; How the economic system we have in place is an agreed upon story that can be re-written; We synthesise how, in practice, we can challenge the scarcity mindset on individual and collective levels; How universal basic services could be beneficial going forward; The importance of making decisions that factor in the question “does this decision or action regenerate life?”; Some classic band-aid solutions to the climate crisis to watch out for; We sum up our “take-away” learnings from our discussion.  Elisa Rathje lives, writes and films the small work at Appleturnover, a small farm on a small island. What if we (the Australian people) took control of the next Federal Election? Part 6 - Dr. Hanabeth Luke, Independent for the Electorate of Page
2022/05/02
Tune in to the 6th and final episode of my deep dive into the hypothetical question “What if we (the Australian people) took control of the next Federal Election? Today I interview Dr. Hanabeth Luke, who is running as an Independent Candidate for the Electorate of Page. Hanabeth is a scientist and Senior Lecturer at the Southern Cross University. She helped found the world's first course in Regenerative Agriculture and was driven to run as an Independent candidate due to her concern with climate inaction in Australia. Today we discuss:  How the campaign is going so far; How Climate200 has assisted Hanabeth during her campaign; How Hanabeth was selected to run as an Independent by the Voices 4 Page community group; Whether, if Hanabeth is elected,  she is open to considering the more progressive and "big picture" ideas in response to the climate crisis and 6th mass extinction; Why comments from the Nationals to the tune of "net zero is dead" are scientifically incorrect; Why it is essential for farming communities that Australia transitions to Net Zero, and how transitioning to more regenerative practices is of significant benefit to farmers; Hanabeth answers the question: will it be chaos if multiple Independents are elected into Parliament with a minority government? Hanabeth explains what she is disappointed by in politics right now and how she thinks things could be different; Hanabeth describes her greatest hardships in life and how they have shaped her to be the person she is today; and Whether Hanabeth thinks the Independents are in with a real chance this Federal Election. Show links:  Dr. Hanabeth Luke Campaign Website - https://www.hanabethluke.com.au/  Dr. Hanabeth Luke, SCU profile - https://www.scu.edu.au/about/contacts/staff-directory/staff/36737.phpClimate200 -  https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&q=climate200
